2.0TSi 190 Fuel economy. Pleasantly surprised.

Featured Replies

I've had my 2024 2.0TSi 190 L&K a few weeks now but not had chance for a run out.

This last week I've had some time off and we booked a week away on the east coast.

So my last 2.0 Turbo petrol was a Subaru Impreza Series McRae and that struggled to get out of the teens mpg. I did once have a Mondeo (3.0V6) with similar performance to the Superb and that averaged mid 20's and wouldn't break 35mpg.

But the last 15 years most of my cars have been diesel.

So I decided this week to drive in normal mode and to drive as I would like. No economy mode and no driving specifically for economy.

I get Lincoln is fairly flat and the A roads are 40/50/60 mph but even so I'm very pleased with the results. (I get the app and car mpg figure maybe slightly optimistic)

My 80 mile drive home today I achieved over 50mpg. (Average speed affected by que to toll bridge)

Over the 5 days I did 270miles and averaged over 45mpg with all days achieving over 40mpg.

Looking at those figures the Superb 2.0TSi 190 offers very similar if not better economy than our 1.5TSi Karoq.

All nice news, eh? 😁

Very glad to hear this as I'm hopefully going to be getting up a used Superb 2.0Tsi this week!

The Gen 3B is an absolute belter of an engine. Even tuned, you can still get crazy-good economy.

My 2.0L Octavia gives noticeably more miles per gallon than my 1.6 Fiesta. (The Fiesta wins on smiles per hour though.)

I've been trying to find out if the 3B became 4B when the Gen 4 came out or whether the 3B is still being fitted alongside the Gen 4 higher powered units.

Yeah, I noticed the evolution didn't stop at gen 3B but once I understood my car, I lost a little interest but haven't really looked into it.

He's what I found with an A.I. search.

So took delivery of my new-used 2.0Tsi L&K today. Delivery driver managed to achieve 50.9mpg on a 200 mile drive - I was very impressed with the economy (and appreciative he had clearly not been razzing it!)

I have a 66-reg 220ps TSI from new. My average mileage from the first tank is just over 36 mpg. I have always taken measurements from the pump as the in-car readout is usually pretty optimistic.

I live in London, so a lot of urban miles. My best tank was 43.1 mpg, my worst 26.5 mpg.

With these MPG it's worth considering getting a 2.0 Petrol instead of a diesel. I'm happy enough get 45MPG either way. Now at the moment in the evenings going home on a 30KM journey I can squeeze 72MPG out of my Diesel.

I wouldn't go quite as far as to say that, there is still a 20mpg difference from 50mpg to 70mpg, that represents a considerable difference (40%), especially for higher mileage drivers like myself, but if you don't cover many miles it doesn't really matter so much.

Yes, it is quite a difference. But I have to drive like a granny to get those numbers 😁

Doing about 12-13K Miles annually

The 190PS 2.0TSi is a different design to the other 2.0's, runs on the Budak cycle with higher compression ratio, totally different valve timing philosophy. Designed to give economy and response at low rpm and low torque demands.

I've had diesel Octavia's, Passat's, XF's, Yeti's etc, etc. I'm more than happy with the economy from the 190 TSi. Petrol is a little cheaper than diesel as well which is a bonus and no DPF/EGR worries.

And so much more refinement.

My thoughts exactly. Always diesel before.

I would say it is not somuch in the mileage by itself, but in the "mix" urban/extraurban.

While in the open my 280 is brilliant also fuel economy wise, in the city is is chugging fuel at an amazing rate for such "brilliant" engine, with numbers that reach 13-16l/100 which is not economical at all. Weird I was expecting it would be more efficient, but it is not, no matter the driving.

While it's true all engines will be less economical around town the 190 is a different animal to the 280 though. 190 was designed for efficiency, it's not just a lower powered version of the 280.

Traffic is just horrible in the capital. I get 8-10L/100km from 2.0 TDI 200hp.. :/

I am lucky to see 24mpg when driving in town , I have the 190 EA888 gen 3B and its great, being quiet and very responsive but sadly I find fuel economy to be low. I have averaged 32 mpg over 25,000 miles ( 70% urban ) and I usually drive with a relatively light right foot.

Having said all that I still wouldn't change it for a diesel, i think petrol ICEs suit the Superb better.

That was on a mainly motorway journey (av speed across motorway and town was 60!), yet to really experience the true urban mpg, I expect it will tally with yours!!

Evo4 will not get an better fuel economy?

I know almost nothing about the EA888 beyond Gen 3B.

My car 2019 Superb 1,5 Tsi over 310 miles of mixed driving and only a small percentage on the motorway achieved 50.9 mpg according to the computer.

Checked oil level today and no movement on the levels.

Engine oil 0-20 looked clean.

I'd agree and also say the speed on longer trips is important.

I have a 1.6 petrol octavia and a 1.5 diesel superb and going from 50 to 60 to 70 shows a fairly consisent 15% drop in mpg on both cars (diesel outperforming the petrol).

Hi! What about evo4? Which one gets better fuel economy?!

No idea, I have a Gen3B.
