Replacement discs and pads

Hi Skoda brothers and sisters.

I have a MK3 Superb 2.0 Diesel 150 HP and have been advised to get new discs and pads by the garage.

I usually source my own service materials so i know they are good quality, and i recall the OEM skoda discs and pads are not the best.

Can anyone offer any suggestions for what brand/model would be a good switch out for the OEM?

Depends if you want an improvement in performance or not (and commensurate increase in price).

One thing I will say is that ceramic pads are brilliant for low dust. I had some ATE Ceramic and it was night and day how little I had to clean the wheels.

There was feedback that they were more aggressive on the discs (ceramic is harder than steel so that would make sense) but I ran them for only a year; maybe I didn’t run them for long enough or maybe the discs the person had used were soft.

You have 312mm vented discs on the front and 300mm solid discs on the back. All Superbs are the same except for the 280bhp versions which have 320 front, 310 rear.

ATE ceramic pads for sure and coated ATE discs

That’s what I’m getting soon anyway for my fronts

Apologies team, i should have been more concise. My driving style, is far from exciting, think driving miss daisy while feeling smug at 70MPG.

I am looking for an alternative brand that provides better value / quality and lifespan than the OEM

Same car model, driven steadily. Mainly major A roads, long runs, minimal town/ city.

Originals lasted only 22k, 3 years, then massive rusty patches and pads wearing badly.

Got brembo discs and pads on special offer at the time from carparts in motion on ebay I seem to remember, theyve done 26k miles so far and practically unworn. They do develop a little surface rust if left undriven for a few days in the rain but less than the originals and soon clears off.

Despite some folks slagging off Brembo, for your driving style I think theyll be fine and certainly better than originals.

Ive had Apex and they have been really good .

I slightly intrigued by your comment ref lifespan.

From what you say your driving style is much the same as mine, my rear discs & pads lasted to 90k miles, the front ones are still original and now at 114k (I've had the car from new). I do cover quite a few miles which I think helps a lot, people who do a low mileage seem to get corrosion issues, and despite the front ones covering a good few miles they still look almost like new, although I suspect it won't be too long before the discs and pads need replacing - the fronts lasted to 131k on my last car (VW Tiguan).

The front pads r different between the 312 mm and 340 mm front discs.

I've been happy with Pagid discs and pads over the years on various cars. The rears seem great over the past 4 years on my mk3 2.0 150hp Superb although I think they are quite pricey for what they are. I tried Bosch at the front and around 2 years ago and they have been great. Less break dust than OEM and the (coated) discs still look great. Bite seems good and no squealing.

Cheapest (reputable) place I could fine at the time was Amazon, but you might be able to do better.

Make sure it's from Amazon direct and not a third party seller if you do go with them.

Ferodo Eco Friction have good reviews. That being said, for an all-rounder, I don't think you can beat OE (note - OE, not OEM).

Hi , I have a 2019 Skoda Superb 1.5 Tsi and the first change of discs and pads occured at 33,000 miles.The car has now covered 40,000 miles and all good.All components manufactured by VW ( came of of VW box )

However , a friend of mine has a small of fleet Skoda cars and his 2016 use to eat discs and pads for fun.7000 miles on the last set and he was told that that's the life of a typical life expectancy of that component.

Drove straight round to a well respected independent VW specialist who fitted a complete set of pads and discs and he is really happy with the results.

@superbmidge Was that a Skoda main dealer technician that suggested new discs and pads were needed. Are you sourcing parts for some Independent to fit, or for you to? Have you actually looked at and checked the discs and pads? Are these the first time they are being replaced?

Hi , no I knew the pads discs need changing as I was going on a long trip ( for me ).The Skoda technician said they would last for a couple of thousand more miles.

Sorry I did not make it clear but my mate took his Superb to a specialist garage in Worcester.

No idea as to the make parts used by the specialist garage but they do have a very good reputation.

Hi Evolution. No, my independent garage flagged at the MOT that they needed done, i asked if it would be a fail and he said no but that they dont have much left in them. Im knocking up 600 miles a week or so and its been a few months so i wanted to get out ahead of it and have the parts instead of paying the ( understandable) mark up that any garage applies. My garage is happy for me to supply parts for all services and just charge me labour which is decent of them.

Good, but did you not ask for their recommendation. It is their full time job. A garage applies a mark up on what they get in from the Factors. Well some might, where you use might. They know what they use or they use for customers or their own cars. Worth asking professionals IMO. PS. Last Friday i had 2 coil springs and a drop link fitted and paid the invoice price parts and VAT & the Labour charge. No mark up on the parts.

Octavia mk3 - Fitted Delphi Disk and pads all round, 2 years ago, several trip to the Pyrenees and daily driving in Devon/Cornwall, defo an upgrade on the OEM ones (more powerful) and have minimum wear after 20k miles, like you, i don't rag it around.

Got mine from Autodoc, at the time, about 50% less than anywhere in UK.

No, it was a few months ago and the guy who did the MOT called me and flagged up a couple of things I needed to get done. Had the chat about needed now/ Vs needed soon . I know of a fact that when parts are needed the girl on the desk just phones the factors and says "rear brake Skoda 150" or along those lines. So I'm stuck with whatever the factor ships out unless I do some research.

Hi , if you believe the supply chain position parts difficult to obtain so in some cases but not all your lucky to obtain any parts for your car.

Reading my post again I understand what you are saying but what do you do if the parts you requested by the preferred supplier are not available.
