Garage clears all ABS fault lights but then they come back on. Am I really looking at £1k repair?? Now with CODES

Featured Replies

Only 35k miles on my lovely Superb Elegance TSI 1.8 estate. 2014.

Had repeated issues with warning lights coming on dash. A garage can clear but then they come back on again after a couple of days.

Current garage has a good diagnostics background and are saying the entire ABS module needs to be sent off - possibly with ABS filter as these can’t be separated (?). Then looking at @£500 for a new ABS module with @£400 labour.

And then still can’t guarantee warning lights won’t reappear. They’ve cleared the fault lights multiple times, diagnostics then says no faults, and then fault lights back on again.

A my wits end. Any advice? Or go ahead with the work? Just not sure what boat I’m in.

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Did they read the existing fault codes, or just clear them?

I think they read them - will check tomorrow. But they said when they cleared them, all the fault codes were cleared and remained cleared. Until the warning lights all popped on again.

Do the warning lights returning trigger fault codes again?

I had a load of warning lights come up on my dash, follow me home lights wouldn't work abs light on no headlight washers, turned out to be a speed sensor! Make sure you get the codes read and go from there!

Yes they should do mate

If they clear the fault codes then there will be none to read and lights will be off. If its a faulty abs/speed sensor it will create new codes every time it fails and lights come on. If the lights are on get it scanned with vcds. Dont clear any codes first. If its a bad sensor it should tell you which one. It could be a broken wire to a sensor or a failing ABS sensor. It could also be a bad bearing/sensor ring.

Hi

It could be a number of things from my experience but you need to find out which one is at fault.

Abs sensor

Abs rings on rear hubs corroded and breaking ( I’ve had that ) it’s a new hub.

Fault on front passenger side, that was a pain. Turned out the harness between the sensor plug and Abs plug has a break in it somewhere.

Good job my lad is good with electrics cos he figured it out, but that keeps coming back to haunt me with water getting in the join so looking at replacing that harness section if only I knew where it went 🙄

But as said you need to know which is at fault and yes you’ll get a code showing you fault everytime it faults putting the lights on the dashboard

Neighbour just had the same problem on his Mitsubishi 4x4. Just back from garage for service and MOT then dash lights like a Xmas tree with numerous warnings re ABS,Steering,4x4 and a lot more. I got called to look and told him to get garage to scan/check sensors etc. Bad clip that holds sensor in bearing plus new bearing as the old one was totaled trying to remove. Back to new again.

^^^ As i had with my Shogun no big expense. Only lit up only when rainy for ages then before i did anything as it was summer time the warning lights started staying on & message said ABS disabled.

I'm always suspicious when a garage quotes you for parts, then states that they can't guarantee that the fault won't return. I sounds like they're guessing what the fault might be and then fire up the parts cannon. As others have said, what fault codes were logged?

It might be worth finding a VAG specialist or a specialist in ABS faults.

Thanks for the replies. I’ve seen all the error codes listed on garages A4 print out but need to take a photo. The speedometer stopped working today - the needle refusing to register any speed whilst on the motorway and the dash yelled ‘BRAKES!’ At me. The joys

That will normally be linked to the offside front wheel abs sensor, but without the codes, we're just guessing

If you could just post any DTCs listed for the ABS system, it would be a start.

OK - Skoda Vehicle Diagnostic Report screen grabs attached. Obviously I've no idea how to interpret these but hopefully might give you a sense of the boat I'm in. And whether I'm in £1k replacement module territory. Many thanks.

The braking faults 0668 could be caused by a low power connection to ABS or bad earth but you seem to have a fair range of faults mainly electrical What is the condition and age of battery. Might be worth checking voltage with engine off. A low battery can cause all manner of problems. Also check the fuses in engine bay near battery for corrosion or looseness as well as earth points etc.

It’s had a new battery put in about 2 months ago.

That's a lot of errors for one system. I'd be checking all fuses, then see if there's any corrosion in the ABS module plug, after that, I'd suspect damage to the wiring loom.

I'd suggest that you have your new battery tested - then have the flagged ABS wheel sensors checked.

I agree with ABS sensors including wiring to them . Theres something not right. It would perhaps explain tire pressure code, power steering and transmision code as well as the ABS errors. I would check all earths especially ABS and ECU and inspect wiring loom and connectors to ABS/ECU etc as well as relevant fuses and check if theres a relay involved.

Thanks so much everyone

@Nmh Did you get this fault resolved?

Yep we’d all like to hear the outcome.
