Skoda Octavia Scout 2015 TDi 148bph build - whine gets worse at higher speed.

Featured Replies

My Scout has a whine that gets worse at higher speed. I have today changed from a set of wheels with winter tyres, to a set with summer wheels - the whine is still there. Could it be the Haldex? It is currently a daily driver. Should I stop until I can get the car looked at?

Is it a transmission whine or perhaps a bad bearing. Try turning slightly left and right when driving. If its a bearing it may change pitch or get less when turning.

Meant to add if you think its transmission/haldex then maybe a gearbox oil level check and also a haldex service including rear differential oil. Could be a clogged haldex filter causing pump to work harder.

Describe the whine in more detail.

Does it happen in every gear or is it engine speed related?

Does it come and go if you take your foot off the accelerator and coast?

What about during engine or foot braking?

As suggested try turning the wheels a bit while its happening? Does the noise change?

Really depends on how it started. If it was suddenly then maybe yes, do get it looked at sooner.

If it was a gradual thing (likely and you only recently noticed it) its probably not a massive deal.

Id certainly be checking trans and diff oils ASAP though.

Sounds alot like a worn diff bit do get back with the answers to the questions about the nature of the noise

Its come on gradually. It is still there if I freewheel (disengage the clutch). It also seems to make no difference if I turn the wheel. I would say it is more a whirr than a whine.

Does it occur at a specific rev range / speed? and does it appear to come from underneath / towards the rear of the car.

If so and it's occurring at about 75moh or 2300 ish revs and is worse in higher gears and your mileage is anything above / around about 70,000 miles then I'd suspect it is probably the rear guibo (doughnut) flexible coupling on the propshaft just in front of the haldex unit that is worn and getting out of balance.

I had my daughter in the car - she thinks it is at the rear left. My mileage is 68,401 and the car is a 15 plate so could it be the cause? Can I still drive it long distance?

If its on one side I would either jack it up and check bearings for smoothness etc or pop into the garage you use and get them to check. A failed bearing will get progressively worse as will the prop. To be on the safe side I would get it checked out in case its low on diff oil or the haldex unit is needing serviced. Bearings are relatively cheap as is prop junction but Haldex/diff will not be.

I have it booked to be looked at in a fortnight. It is a daily driver but only 5 miles there and back. Will not take it long distance.

That does sound like it ticks all the boxes for the propshaft coupling... In terms of driving it - yes you should be OK - the one on our Octavia II 4x4 TDi started to go at about 75,000 miles and then got progressively worse and louder but it continued to 'work' (albeit noisily) until we had about 113,000 miles on the clock at which point we moved it on and bought our Kodiaq.
