Tamiya R/C fun

I was rooting around in my garage clearing out as you do when i come across a couple of old radio controlled cars. Back in 1989 I was a spotty little oik of around 13 years old and an avid fan of Tamiya models and R/C cars. I had a Terra Scorcher at the time but i'd seen something flash, something new and I wanted it. After much pleading, begging and numerous chores around the house for my birthday my parents bought me what I wanted most. A Tamiya Egress. This I thought was the muts nuts and built it up straight away. I used it for a few years, and even did some competitiion racing a a local track (didnt do to badly).

So imagine my suprise when sorting though the boxes in my garage I found what was left of my dear old Egress. Missing radio gear and speed controller and wearing a ProCat body it looked a little sorry. The old LRP motor is well beyond repair. So after a little searching on e-bay I have ordered the correct parts to bring her back to life. OK it wont be as pristine as some of the examples on here but Im keen to get it done :)

After a good clean up, just waiting a replica bodyshell and a new speed controller.

I dug a little further and found another. Not sure what I have done to the body again (getting a habbit this..lol). a Vanessa's Lunchbox, everything seems there aside from the radio gear (I wonder where all that did go???) and it has a broken steering arm (I think one of the big wheels clobbered something and it snapped many moons ago). So I need to replace or upgrade that and i'll have another runner.

I have just placed an order with Masons Vintage Tamiya for a new body set, i'll get her looking flash before long.

Here are my two toys...

HPI Savage 4.6 SS, which is awesome! Absolutely love it, and it a lot easier to use than the other one. Heres a vid of it in action

And here is the other one. Schumacher Fusion. Does 60mph as it is, but you need to sweep the carpark before you can really use it. Two pics, one with its pimp wheels and one with wheels that actually offer some reasonable grip! The white discs have foam tyres. Kind of trashed them slightly though after it did a barrel roll at about 50mph!

Some nice vintage gear you've got there Ross  Look after them, they're both getting rare and collectable now.

Here are some pics of my toys.

The first is a Hongnor Truggy with Axial 6.6cc motor producing over 3.5bhp. Best described as "Fairly nippy" :D

The second is a Yokomo Drift car with the Blitz R34 shell complete with working lights. Awesome fun and will drift just like the real thing.

The third is a Prototype 1/8th Rallycross that we are looking at importing into the UK. These are the pure racing machines that will touch 50mph off road.

Here's how tough these things are:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QADldgFHvD4

I've joined up with the TamiyaClub now' date=' allready had a few offers on both of them in any condition..lol

Can you get Tamiya spares Rich? Know anything about beefing up the Lunchbox steering, apparently BlackFoot stuff is the way to go.[/quote']

We can get Tamiya stuff, but to be honest we don't sell much of it. Although they do make some top-end racing kits, most tamiya stuff is at the hobby and fun end nowadays and we are mainly a racing shop.

I can pm you details of a shop that has got quite a bit of older Tamiya stuff if you like. There are also quite a few specialists advertising in Radio Racecar magazine.

I always wanted the Lunchbox, I ended up with an Escort Cossie instead! Still R/C touring car racing is the only thing I have a trophy for! I quit many years ago!

What was the fourwheel drive, four wheel steering, dual motered monster called, it was typically red....argh it's doing my head in now!!

I've got some collectables now. My fave is a NIB Dyna Blaster. I used to race heavily in my teens, my best finish was 6th in the British GP for 1/10th off road against the likes of Jamie Booth. Now I am an adult (of sorts) it shocks me how much money my parents stumped up so that I could race 'toy' cars. Not to mention driving me all over the country, and flying me to Oz for the Worlds which Masami Hirosaka won for the umpteenth time.

I've had both the Clod and the King cab. The King cab was better - faster and more tunable. The Clod was just a laugh really.

Yeah. I was sponsored by Ted Longshaw to race the PB Ace. Problem was it was rubbish. Rear engined, chain driven and very fragile. Went back to a CAT soon after that. I came second to Craig Drescher at the Junior Nats. I was leading but battery dumped on the last lap. It's interesting that a lot of the off-road guys I raced against have defected to circuit racing.

Thought Id post some of mine:P:

Firstly is the Serpent 710, minus an engine at the mo but I raced with a NovaMax Fantini .12 turbo which went like stink.

Unfortunatly due to the distance the national races were and the fact that I had exam the day after them I had to knock this on the head for a bit and so I got into off road with the Team Associated RC10 B4 factory team. This one is brilliant for racing off road with and this year Im racing with a brushless system, the Nosram 4 star (equivlent of a 7 turn brushed motor). Also, under the case is a Spectrum reciever which Ive recently moved to and again, its so much better and eliminates (almost) all radio related issues.

For on road racing I have a RC10 TC4, again factory team spec. No brushless in this one yet - might put it in this weekend though as Im racing that in a comp.

Cant be a hardcore racer without a F1 car to race either! This one is the F201 Tamiya, std set up.

For IC Rubber, I used to race the RC10 Nitro TC3, again a top notch car but struggled with setting it up to run foam comfortably hence the move to the Serpent. 2004_0302Mikes0004.jpg

Finally for outright fun its got to be the HPI savage 25, with 7.7" tyres on it jumps like a beast!

Others that I have are:

Kyosho Sandmaster (both the buggy and rally Escort), Tamiya TA04 (two of these), Tamiya TL01, Mardave V12.

I was always a Kyosho kid rather than Tamiya, although the Egress was very nice,

I had (and still have gathering dust) a Kyosho Optima Mid, and a Lazer ZXR (both were the top ones, cant remember exact names) and a couple of others too, one with a nitro engine and one Tamiya buggy that I cant remember the name of, broke very easily though!!

every now and again I get them out for a blast, it's been over 5 years since I last played with them though cos I bought a monster truck to play with in the garden!
