they did offer free insurance but to qualify for the insurance on either the vtr or vts you had to be at least 25 with 2 years clean experience i think.

My mate bought his VTR with free insurance 5 years ago and he's just celebrated his 27th birthday :D I think they had to drop the free insurance deal cos of the number of inexperienced drivers having accidents, but I could be wrong on that :D

The petrol FSI Turbo does 80mph at 3,000rpm - hardly ear bashing and not much more than the 2,000 - 2,500rpm that the diesel probably requires. Besides, there are more aspects to 'relaxed cruising' than engine noise alone and since they are effectively the same car the actual differences will be minimal.

Fair comment. Incidentally, at what revs does the FSI vRS run out of puff and/or get so raucous you feel the need to change up? My current Furby 140bhp vRS revs freely beyond 5K. Does the FSI have lots of pull between 5k and 7k? I'm genuinely interested as considering an Octy vRS as next company car when the Furby goes back and likley to choose between either flavour of Octy vRS and a Leon FR... Cheers.

That's what fitting the PD 160 air intake did for mine.

Most of the original veterans of the Fabia Diesel vRS Vs Octavia Petrol vRS debacle have moved on to bigger and better/faster cars now so the diesel/petrol argument will be left to newer members methinks.

For my money, I'd be investing in a year old Golf GTI (petrol petrol petrol petrol). Thanks.

I don't want an argument, I just want facts! Are any of you petrolhead FSI supporters going to answer my question? -

Yes would be my answer. Seeing as your current car is redlined at 5k, why would you rev beyond that anyway?

Of the 2 the petrol has much greater "reach" than the diesel and I think it would take a well piloted one to keep up with a petrol one.

But at the same time if you are driving lazy then the derv should eat the petrol one as they will often be out of the power band.

In terms of the cars it depends what you like.

- Derv is quick and fun and you can drive it in the gears and go when you put your foot down.

- Petrol one is outright faster, no question. However if you are not in the right gear then the derv one would be well gone before you started catching it.

IMHO all depends what you like really.

Tavia, can i ask is your SDI really an SDI or more a PD130?

I know you hate diesels, but seriously take a newer one for a test drive. Might not be as bad as you think :)

Really? Any mods done? The standard one runs out of puff at about 3.5k. Even a remapped one won't pull beyond 5k and since you are way into the redline over 5k I wouldn't want to do that, with or without a remap.

Stop tempting me. :) Actually in my head I've already got the car, just wish SWMBO could see it, it looks great. :)

Here's a good one for ya

Derv floors it, petrol in wrong gear .............. petrol driver does the unthinkable and

changes down.

And a small investment of currency (I forget the amount but it's some figure based on primates or something) will give you derv like torque from 2k rpm

I honestly can't think of a "reason" for a Derv based vRS, when you could get a specced up elegance for the same price.

I would now rather have the aforementioned Elegance 2.0TDI. Which is probably more than fast enough for my limited abilities.

Jon posted a review of the 170bhp SEAT something or other and it didn't change his mind ;) There has been a big move in turbo petrols to make them more drivable and this is evident in the new Focus ST and VAG 2.0TSFi where peak torque is much lower down the rev range than older generation turbo cars :D

Leather isn't an option on the vRS. Half leather is standard.

The fsi doesn't run out of puff. It also sounds better the harder you rev it.. Also, it pulls cleanly from 2k, right through to 7k, with a noticable increase in pull at 4500k.

I have a mapped/modded Fabia Vrs too, so don't think i'm biased.

Totally agree with Shifty's comment's.

Must say, my thoughts of going for the TDi vRS are changing, more vehicles in stock in the UK with the petrol version, plus without haggling I've been offered

I am also keen to hear on the potential of the 170 if it has the DPF fitted as standard. There was a thread a long time back where a certain tuner could not achieve any significant gains due to such filter being fitted to a car.

Would certainly be a consideration if you had any thoughts of trying to put a 'TFSi slayer' on the road!!

Yes. But last time I mentioned heated seats in a VRS someone here said you could have them if you took the leather option. Hence being confused; Skoda say one thing, Briskoda said another!
