Featured Replies

SWMBO is gonna buy me a new Camera for Chrimbo but I am a bit lost as to which one to ask for.

Any Guru's??

The man at Dixons reckons the Canon Ixus 60 is a good bet.

Really depends what you want from it and what your budget is.

There are alot of features that need to be taken into account.

* No of Megapixels(Image quality)

* Type of camera - point and click or Digital SLR

* Memory Card type & size's

* Will you need a high zoom facility

Yep budget and what will you use it for is a good place to start

Well as some of you may know I am a simple man!!

Budget of sub £250 ideally but not rigidly.

* No of Megapixels(Image quality) - More than 5 but whatever

* Type of camera - point and click or Digital SLR - Pocket sized and simple

* Memory Card type & size's - Not bothered, pretty cheap now.

* Will you need a high zoom facility - Nice zoom would be good but not too bulky.

Currently have a Sony DSC-P12 5mp to replace.

Thanks for the suggestions gents but they are both bricks!!

I want a point and shoot pocket sized thing for a photographic idiot!!

I like the look of the new Sony Cyber Shot DSC-N2 - 10 megapixels and 25mb built in memory!!

Sony Cybershot DSC-N2

Have had a Fuji 602 for three years - taken thousands of pics - if I was to go for a new camera tomorrow, one that can 'point & shoot' but also do a lot lot more then I'd choose the Panasonic DMC FZ7 (

I've just bought this. A bit early to give a detailed review (Its my xmas pressie, so only had a play before it got wrapped up) but the screen is amazing.

Jessops.com - Fuji Finepix F650 Digital Camera

plus, if you've got a nectar card and you get to jessops website via there you get another 10% off!!

add a 2Gb xd card from ebuyer for about £40 and I ended up with the camera, card, case (£15) spare battery (£20?) for about £210

(if you lose the spare battery & case it's be about £175)

Panasonic FZ7 not 'that' big if you look at the piccy of it in the guys hands + there are size measurements on the review. Anyway, you must have big pockets with what you've done to your motor....

Other things -

in camera memory, all are pretty useless i.e. will allow (let's say) 8 pics at top quality, so don't be swayed by that statistic especailly with the low low prices on memory cards nowadays.

I want one that I can slip into my pocket when out and about.

Already been looking at some memory cards, even if I stick with Sony it seems my current stock of Memory Sticks won't be of any use.

I had a hold of a Samsung NV10 today in black, seemed very nice but the Dixons man warned it was complicated.

Pick out a few that sound good and then check out some online review websites such as ciao.co.uk or dooyoo.co.uk. I usually find them really useful :)

The FZ7 is a lovely camera - I have one - but it's not pocket sized.

They do a much smaller one , the TZ1 which has a 10x zoom which might be worth a look if size is an issue.

It can be had cheaper elsewhere , but this is the beastie

Okay, some are a bit bulky.

I suggest a good bit of reading (a lot actually) as you'll soon get peed off with the limitations of many basic cameras.

The better ones will let you do far more and also hike up the picture 'success' rate.

+ this one, the guy does 'Dave's Picks' i.e. the best cameras to suit different criteria - long shot, budget, pro, compact .....

Digital Cameras, Digital Camera Reviews - The Imaging Resource!

You'll find that cameras 'up a notch' will allow point and shoot but have functions which will also allow more creativity as you 'grow' with the camera. Don't don't forget the low-light (my Fuji is brill at everything except focusing in low light) and the image stabilisation (besides allowing you to take sharp piccies in lower light it also compensates for shaking - and everyone does this and in freezing cold / exposed conditions you'll shake like a pneumatic drill).

I notice the 'deep pockets' comment went unchallenged !

I'm still quite stuck on the Ixus 60 but I do like the Fuji F650 too.

It should be noted that in general I take pictures because I need to, it's not something I do for fun, so much as I am sure some of these fandango wide wheels SLRs are good, they don't intrigue me I'm afraid. I like simplicty.

Fuji cameras generally have good battery life and the pictures are nice and bright ...always pleased with the cameras I had from them

I love my Ixus 700, so I'd plump for the IXUS 60. Great cameras, and the battery life is very good indeed.

Lots of features, but all easy to use. Nothing but praise. Only qualm is that dark pictures never seem to come out great, but that could be me.

Would she stretch to the IXUS 750? Looks just like my 700 which is great.

Also to add, when I dropped mine and cracked the screen, I sent it to Canon and a brand new one was in my possession 4 days later. :D

I've got one of these:

Fuji Finepix Z1

bb050718_400.jpg

Takes excellent portraits... It's absolutely amazing at "Party" shots, even in low light.

£145 ish.

BTW, I've "a feeling" santa will be bringing me a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7 for Christmas this year (THANK YOU MUM!!!)... I had one of the first Lumix pocket cameras years ago (2mp) and the lens made it fantastic... I'm hoping the FZ7 will do everything I need it to (and will thus stop me craving a DSLR :) )

The FZ7 should do very nicely Josh - and stop those cravings.

I nearly got the FZ6, but I was too weak, as it was all down to me buying the upgrade, and I ended up with my 350D :D

Still, very nice cameras...

Steve
