Octy Down

Just spoke to CS

The place my car has been taken to is only an authorised repair agent not a dealer, so they have no stock cars to take coil packs from. They are ringing round other dealers asking for stock of coil packs as there are non in the entire VAG system.

I have been told it's down to the dealers concerned to allow coil packs to be removed from their vehicles in stock, not SUK and if a dealer won't then they have NO solution at this time to my problem of getting home tomorrow night, and then getting to work in Cardiff next week and Inverness the week after etc. I have also been told that there is no indication of when coil packs will be available through the VAG network.

How can they not have any kind of solution to a simple problem? if the car is not fixed on Thursday, let me keep the hire car, fix my car when coil packs are available, have the RAC return my car home and the hire company collect their car when things are repaired ....... how chuffing hard can it be?

Where do you go / how do you go about escalating something like this?

Any people from dealers here reading this thread want to comment, privately if necessary?

Skoda UK must have some UK based stock as dealers are able to source cars at 2 weeks notice. Surely they can rob one of these.

If all else fails then go to the top and talk about potetial loss of earnings, reimbursement for a hire car, etc, etc.

In my Audi owning days they would just put you into an Audi Rental Car and that was the end of it.

I would expect the same of Skoda.

Well, Philip Wilks are stars, a big thumbs up from me

SUK gave them a list of dealers to try, and they have a coil pack at a dealer in Carlisle and have sent a driver up to collect it, hopefully it's a new rev E coilpack :)

Thanks to the dealer in Carlisle (whoever it is) for helping sort it, I should get the car back tomorrow sometime.

I still feel more than a little annoyed by SUK who where pretty lacklustre in their performance at best, they did not check the dealers, they just gave the girl at Philip Wilks a list of numbers and said "try these".

Philip Wilks phoned me to tell me what was happening and that they where now on their way to Carlisle to collect the parts, then an hour later SUK phoned to say "Good news, we have a solution".

Lets see how it goes, and if the new coilpack lasts a little while longer, I have a lot of miles to do over the next 2 - 3 weeks .... fingers crossed.

Keep an eye on those coilpacks mk2 owners........ it seems that number 1 may have gone because it was faulty, it seems number 2 cylinder may have "popped" up from the recess where it has then shorted and failed, maybe they should modify them for some kind of bolt in solution?

That coilpack photo looks remarkably like the ones from the 1.8T, After loosing the first one I always carried a spare in the back of the car in case another one went. They are not that expensive, and buying one at least gives you some piece of mind. When the next one failed I changed it myself, went to the dealer and they read the codes from the computer, I then exchanged the broken one for a new one and had that as the spare.

I don't mind doing that mate, as long as I can get hold of a spare ........

I will talk to my friendly SEAT dealer again this weekend, as I just discovered something from them that is making my blood boil, but I need to take a breath .......... and chilllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll :)

Ooooooooooooo Please tell, share your secret with us all

All I will say at the moment is that I spoke to a SEAT dealer I use a lot for VAG parts, quoted the part number and he told me he could have one for me by tomorrow.

With regard to the securing arrangements, if you look at the loom that carries the plugs to the coils you can see it has been designed to be screwed to the rocker cover. None of the cars I have seen have these screws fitted.

I checked our stock today -- none and none in our other three branches either or at VW UK -- they have been on back order for quite some time as well.

Glad to hear that you have a solution. As previously stated with Audi or Volkswagen as long as a vehicle is within the warranty period and the car is with a dealer and parts on back order - customer is placed in hire car - usually an Audi or Volkswagen and often a higher spec car -- would have expected the same from Skoda - it would appear they dont :(

We often try and sort things like this ourselves - as getting CS involved just complicates things massively.

Well I have got a Sharan at the moment so not overly shabby, it was the way it was handled and my Seat guy has a couple on the shelf so I have reserved one for when I get home tomorrow.

Checking with another contact there are some coil packs inbound but only 15 of them on the first batch ............... 15's not a lot when I have gone through 3 in 3 weeks :)

I would rather have sorted it out without CS getting involved but it was the dealer that initially told me to phone CS ........ then the dealer got things sorted and I think it was CS that where a bit shabby

Screw this for a lark. I was plagued with my 1.8T GTI and carried a spare. Any prices and partnumbers for the new revision. I'll be ordering one just in case. Not nice to be stranded in a new car.

If Skoda dealers don't have the 'confidence' to sort out a hire car in the same way VV/Audi do, what does this say about the way VAG 'look after' their much praised Skoda dealers and thus our needs if things do go belly up?

Are Skoda dealers cut out of the loop a bit? Why would they be concerned about the cost of a hire car to a valued customer who is under warrenty?

Is it a case of sympathy for the dealer, and the fact that some animals are (in the VAG Group) more equal than others?!

This thread alone is really bad publicity all round. They would do well to read this and act on it. Lots of people use the forum from Goggle as a valuable resourse to inform their car buying, as I did. This would have put me off in the same way I discovered am alarming number of certain Rover cars had Head Gasket problems on a forum. I Know that's where people tend to post a lot of problems, but the fact they are real people like you amd me.......makes yer stop and think at least.

M

keep that fire extinguisher handy , they are only replacing the burnt out coil pack aren't they , asuming also with the revision E type , so that means you've still got coils which could potentially go faulty/on fire in the future

Well I just got back, about 10 mins ago. First of all the people at Philip Wilks are absolutely outstanding, they bent over backwards to sort things out, because I went to collect the car from them tonight and guess what

A coil pack failed again and it went onto 3 cylinders as they where driving the fecker out of the workshop.

The replacement coilpack from Monday was old stock and a Rev B, they replaced the No2 coilpack with one they got from a dealer in Carlisle with a Rev D then No1 burnt out again (the new Rev B)

After much toing and froing and whilst waiting for Skoda Customer services to phone us back, Gemma the service reception girl took things into her own hands, she phoned the RAC who we know had coil packs, they fobbed her off so she demanded to speak to a line manager from Skoda assist (all while I was standing there). The manager phoned her back and said they would send a patrolman out but that patrolman had NO coilpacks, they would NOT send the patrolman to the place where the van that had the coilpacks on was located as the driver of that van had finished his shift.

We insisted that it was not good enough and the Senior "patrolman" somehow picked up on the conversation (maybe via Radio or Mobile ... not sure) he was off duty and had the coilpacks. He phoned the dealer direct then and spoke to Gemma and came out himself within 4o mins and could not have been more helpful, he swapped out the freshly toasted coilpack for another Rev D. We tested the car with the diagnostics and with a brisk roadtest and all was fine.

I now am the proud owner of 2 x Rev D coilpacks and 2 x Rev C coilpacks.

Customer services say they will investigate this further and I am going to speak to my local dealer and insist on getting the remaining C's swapped for D's or E's and I am going to be carrying a spare in the future when they are in stock.

I may be the only Mk2 vRS witha coilpack failure here on Brisky but there have been Mk5 golfs, and Leon FR's that have failed and so it's possible others here may experience this if they have older coilpacks fitted to their cars. Aprt from the part number, the newer coilpacks are charcoal grey in colour not black like the originals, I will post some pics tomorrow to illustrate.........

Right, I am having a beer.........

Gonna have to see what i've got I suppose. It does seem that've had a fair few problems with yours mate.

  • 3 weeks later...

Mine went last night!

At about 12:30 midnight, Was sitting in car with engine off for 5mins after a half hour journey then noticed smoke coming from bonnet! Looked under bonnet couldnt see anything but smelt like burning around the back (near the turbo!). Engine wouldnt start so called seat assistance. AA turned up in 15mins ( I was in central london) took engine cover off and coil no.1 was sitting about 1cm higher than the others. He took it out and the bottom was burnt. Replaced it was a simalar one, and also replaced broken fuse, and worked fine. Have driven 120miles today with no probs.

Didnt have any errors or DTC's come up.

This is a early 2006 model car.

Oooh - Starting to sound like a problem then.

My Nissan in Japan had separate coilpacks. I guess most cars these days do. I can't see why, after all the issues with them on the Mk 1 Octavia (many engine variants) they can't get it right now. I think maybe a bit of penny-pinching is going on ...

So some more new coil packs for you then Dan.

They may well have put the new one into cylinder 2 if they had swapped the original coil packs over to see if the missfire moves to the new cylinder, easy way to confirm the coil pack failure.

I'll see if there is any info on the Golf GTi with regards to revisions etc on Monday.

Sounds a little like how mine went, touch wood everything has been fine with the Octy though since.

TDis are the future :D

You would think that VAG would have sorted this out after the 1.8t saga.. are the coilpacks different?

Yes they are different Colin and yes you'd like to think they'd have solved the issue too.

  • 4 years later...

Mine too this evening emoticon-0106-crying.gif car is a 56 VRS petrol. Was driving along when the car started to pop along, all power disappeared, I remember the symptoms from having coil pack issues in my old A4, engine management light came on and flashed for about 30 seconds then went off.

How do you folks handle this? Call Skoda? I have a weekend away with the missus from tomorrow evening, am thinking of scooting down to Eurocarparts in Poole to see if they have coil packs in stock, first though I'll swap the possible offending coil pack with another to check for fault change.

Are coil packs easy to self fit?
