hi, im very interested in weight loss,(from the car before anyone gets cheeky!,lol) do you have to go to town with ripping stuff out to notice the difference? i know the spare is a full alloy and weighs alot but the rear seats are foam, surely they weigh naff all and when stripped out alone would make minimal difference??? Can anyone reccomend where the most significant losses can be made without resorting to destroying the car?

There's quite a bit of difference. ;)

Remapped is different - my Octy has the same power and more torque than my boss's 330i :D:D:D

Rear seat back weighs ALOT, they're not just foam like the bases. Just the the contents of the boot and back seats make a noticable difference. Enough to reduce 1/4 mile times. You'll also be able to hear the exhaust considerably louder.

Other weight savings are more effort for less reward or expensive. Mods that save weight are lighter wheels, lighter brakes (2 piece discs), lighter body panels, single mass flywheel, stainless steel exhaust, etc... Of those mentioned lighter wheels and brake discs would make the most significant difference due to being unsprung mass.

cracking, thats what i figured,(above rear seats and spare it gets less rewarding). The lower part of the rear seats(the bum bit not the back bit) is all foam, i guess id assumed wrongly the back bit is the same, next time im our for a good drive ill fetch em out to see what the difference is! cheers.

when i started to take weight out of my car, i started by removing items that werent needed.

first of all i cleaned my car out of all the stuff that was in the glovebox and doors etc, then i sold my sub, amp and wiring kit, (because i didnt want it no more) not really to reduce weight.

then i removed a boat load of tools out from the boot, along with the sound proffing in the boot, mat above the spare wheel/floor and spare wheel,

i calculated it to weigh in the region of 40kg+, the difference was staggering.

sorry, what weighed 40kg, the interior bits and tyre or the tools and crap too?

40kg sounds like a well worth while exercise!

everything, tools, alot of those, tyre, sound proofing, boot floor, a million cd's and other pieces of junk in the glove box and doors, along with a sub, amp and wiring kit.

the difference was noticable, only thing is only bout 15kg was actually taken out, all the rest shouldnt have been there, if u know what i mean.

The spare and toolkit will be over 10kg and the back seats are over 20kg so there are significant gains to be made.

Just out of interest what would the weight difference be does anyone know

i think i read once that every 5kg = 1bhp

I would say a Remapped Octavia vRS is about the same to a 330i . They are very quick cars, just highly underestimated.

Carbon fibre panels?

  • 2 weeks later...

Just timed a few 0-60 runs in mine and its looking more like 5.5-6 seconds than 7.5, im timing it with a stopwatch and i know its rough but i new it wasnt 8 second territory, how do you test it the correct way?

Down the strip they can measure it.

Your speedo more than likely will be out aswell (Use a Tom Tom & you will see what i mean) So you might only be timing yourself from 0 - 55 or so in stead of 0 - 60 - Think im right in what im saying anyway

Yeah fair enough i guess, what strips do that kind of thing?

Don't forget some timed runs you see in the mags are 0-62mph (100kph) and others are 0-60.
