Yesterday's Sunday Mirror..Ultimate Unleaded

Featured Replies

Anyone get the Sunday Mirror yesterday (17th June 2997), well any Whooooo, the guy who runs the motor sport double page spread had a small paragraph plugging he was at some motorshow this week and secondly that if someone came up to him and asked him about ultimate diesel fuel, he would tell you something that would make your jaw drop!!!

I cant remember the exact words coz the papers already been recycled (never in a million years did I think I would ever say that :P ) .

Any ideas what it could be or even better if any sees the bloke ask hime for me

Surely that's Count Dracula ?

(may have mispelt at least one of those words)

Didn't he "clock" cars for a living before doing voice-overs for banal dog shows on Channel 5, or whatever it is he does now?

Funny this topic has come up as I was wondering the other day what the difference is with all these different fuels like optimum etc

I have a petrol engine and just put the cheapest stuff in which is the supermarket stuff but was wondering if I used these so called more advanced fuels does it make any difference to the performance? and would using a BP/Shell make any difference?

Mainly I was wondering the premium ones that are more expensive do they give you better mileage to offset the extra cost of filling up with them.

Diesel, no idea :) but there is a noticeable difference in a petrol engined care if it is mapped to use the said fuel. If it's not, then you may get slightly better response and a few more mpg but it would take a quick session on a calculator after running through a few tanks of fuel to work out if it was more cost effective.

If I have to run my octy on 95 as has happened a couple of times when I was out in the middle of nowhere there is a without a doubt a drop in performance and response (even after tweaking with a little black box).

I normally run mine on Shell V-Power and sometimes Tesco's 99 SUL. On a side note, my local Shell station's fuel is the same price as Asda and Tesco.

I have tried Ultimate derv and think it has no noticeable effect and certainly not one that justifies 7 or 8p a litre more as it is here.

The shell extra is the same price as normal shell so i tend to use that as it doesn't cost any more and seems marginally less smoky. That could just be me thinking it though.

Shell is currently cheapest around here so it is where I go.

In mid-2004, before I got my vRS I calculated that the mpg benefits of Ultimate diesel in a PD100 just about balanced the 3p-4p price differential. Since then, the price premium has increased, so I've switched to Shell Diesel Extra which I have found to be as beneficial at much lower cost.

You'll need to check whether the MPi engine in your car can cope with high-octane petrol, being a bit on the low-tech side. You might be OK with 98RON ('standard' fuel is 95RON), but some stations now have 99RON, which might cause you problems. Should say on the inside of the filler cap.

Just as a point of interest, I gather some newer petrol engines are supposed to be run on high-octane petrol, and performance suffers otherwise...

I think we have one shell garage which is about the same price as ASDA/Morrisons which is our cheapest.

cheers forthe info I will give the shell extra a try

I avoid the BP garages as they are the dearest by a mile.

Deleted.

Just be aware of my post, which got there just before your reply. Don't think Shell Extra would be a problem, though...

Tend to run BP if I can because it seeeeeeems to make a difference. Shell Ultimate Diesel definitely makes a difference, a lot less smoky if nothing else, again seeeems to be a bit quicker to pick up but it's hard to tell really.

Shell Ultimate Diesel?

Where can you buy that from?

Shurely Shome Mishtake.

I used Tesco 99 last time I filled up but normally I always use V-Power. I didn't notice much performance wise however with the Tesco 99 I got around 50miles less from the tank! Have you noticed anything similar? I know I won't be using Tesco 99 again.

I have a BP station near me, and have always used BP ultimate since I had the car... a couple of weeks ago, I was forced to fill up with the standard stuff, and it was the first time I had ever been able to see visible smoke behind me! :( filled up with ultimate again next time....

Just found this on petrolprices.com hope it's ok to copy and paste from it.

One of our users commented that using higher octane fuel than your engine requires actually gives no benefit and may be a waste of money. This is because virtually NO engines require 98 RON over 95, and the market for 'super' fuels seems to be based on people's misunderstanding of octane ratings and the placebo effect of filling up with 'more powerful' fuel - making motorists think their engine is running better in some way.

What do the fuel companies say then, to justify the "increased power" claims for the super grade fuels? Some companies say that while all fuels contain cleaning additives, 'super' fuels contain more or better detergents to keep the injectors cleaner than standard fuel. Others say the fuel is a few percent denser which gives slightly more power per litre. These benefits may be marginal though in comparison to the extra cost involved so it is worth ensuring that your engine will actually benefit before filling up.

I checked my fuel cap and it says RON 95 so will just stick to normal petrol but stay away from Supermarket stuff.

The higher octane stuff is only beneficial if you have changed engine settings. Remaps, bigger turbos etc..

You will be able to achieve more power using a higher octane fuel.

Japan has 115 octane fuel available because Skylines just aren't fast enough are they!;)

I know a lot of petrol car drivers who are driving around with less power than they reckon they have. All BMW 6 & 8-cylinder engines have their power figures quoted using 98 ron. All VW FSI engines are designed to work best on 98ron, using 95 results in lower power and economy.
