Featured Replies

my hybrid from turbo dynamics wend after 10,000.

Turbo dynamics and Star, said because of the variable blades, you need to give it stick or they will clog. mine stuck on full boost.

great excuse to cain the motor.

now i regularly take it out to boot the sh**t out of it in the fear that it will happen again.

i worry when it sits for a couple of days without use.

Yep - I do give mine at least a couple of bits of full boost where possible on a journey (once warm) and it very rarely goes a day without being driven. Does my commute, and normally does something most weekends. That's probably keeping my turbo and other bits in good condition. :)

i agree, my mates done loads of miles and not one turbo issue.

good excuse when out with the mrs as well. (i need to!!!!)

So is their a general reliability problem with vag diesel turbos? or is it just us lot thrashing them

Do turbos really need to "cool down" these days? I used to religiously run the Scooby down after a high speed blat but since turning to diesel, I've not bothered, and I rarely bother warming the car up either (I live 2 minutes from the A303!). Haven't managed to kill a turbo yet :o

Chris

They never did need to "cool down", what they do need tho is a supply of oil when the turbo is "spooling down" from massive RPMs. ;)

The first turbo on my Fabia went at 10K!

Care to tell us a little how you drive the car?

How often say do you hit the limiter? You got it remapped? how old are you?

oh! yeah! ..... i got the car back, turbo and intercooler changed out, oil and filter change too. he said the turbo blades were all cracked and broken to bits. i asked why this would have happened and he just said faulty parts.

anyway i finally got it. now i've just gotta get my wheels sorted courtesy of skoda road assist as the finish got wrecked when the car was tied up to the recovery truck...

So when I post here about the 330d and people give scare stories about the turbo failing then vRS are no different in fact from the BMW forums I dont recall seeing any posts on this topic!

Nor Seat Ibiza TDI either - maybe its the driving style ??

so is this "booting" required on standard turbos or is the clogging issues only due to your variable blades?

My car sits for two weeks without getting used every three weeks as i work offshore... is this bad? i'm letting my dad use it this time away:thumbup:

stu.

ive been told to regularly (USE) the turbo.

And jim @ star knows what hes talking about.

So does my visa card. lol

Good enough for me

Maybe its because we are all spotty teenagers with modded cars, maybe its because we are angry t paying so much for insurance, maybe it's because we don't have the legendary 330d (bit slow for my liking) maybe its because YOU have your head right up your ****, and all you can see is your own ****? Who knows what the real reason is. I imagine its a manufacturing defect myself. Im on my 6th turbo now, two failed due to manufacturing dfect, the reast have come out of my pocket, reasons other than that. Thats the way it goes.

My old Ibiza TDi 130 has just had the turbo go

I had some work done from a well know Diesel tuning company which cost a few

I drove it quickly, but I always made sure I let it warm up before ragging it, and let it cool down before turning it off. I was 18 when I got it but I don't see what that has to do with it.

Just to clear up the whole thing about turbos needing to cool down:

turbo_article.jpg

I'm on 54k now - used most days for a good 25 miles each way on my commute, plus the odd pootle and 'trip out'. No probs so far...

*frantically searches for some wood to touch*

Thanks for clearing that up  In the Scooby handbook the only time it mentioned needing to leave it idling was after a "high speed" motorway run when pulling straight into a services/car park.

So are vag (garrett/KKK) turbo's water cooled?

Not on the Fabia vRS no

Well a 330D has 231bhp & 500nm std, a

If thats not quick enough for you why are you driving a vRS as clearly its not up to your requirement for performance.

Maybe he likes driving it?

alright. iv got a vrs fabia, with a jabba custom remap on it,i am now w8ting for my 3rd turbo to come, after the last 2 has blown up.the car is running at 173bhp and i do drive it hard but how can i stop the turbos blowing and still have fun in it,and y r thay blowing?

ScoobChris just reminded me of something. Pre MY2000 Scoobies had a little white label affixed to the driver's side with the warning to allow the turbo to spool down before shutting the engine off.

The issue as described to me was that when the engine shut off, the oil pump stopped and the turbo, starved of lubrication, continued to run at high speed and wore out earlier or seized.

On one of the Scooby forums, there was a Subaru pikey mod (a spikey mod?) where some guys installed a self-contained oil supply dedicated to supplying the turbo with oil, independently of the engine oil pump or supply, which they claimed prolonged turbo life and obviated the need for a turbo-timer.

I can't remember full details, can anyone else help?

Oh as for duration of turbos, had my fr from new in august 2005, feb 2006 had a 2nd hand hybrid vt2 turbo, that lasted 2 days and blew up..... vanes stuck had to purchase a new one, with warranty from allards for 800, month and a half later, that baby let go in a big way, white smoke poured out the exhaust when the engine was turned on...... that was after about 1.5k miles.

Next one was good, and all 3 turbos had about 32psi go through them, with a peak occasionally at 36psi.
