Just did a quick quote with Direct Line (my current insurer) for me and it came out as £219 for an unmodded 2003 Fabia RS. Not unreasonable I thought.

I think Andy's right... what is the cost to you unmodded?

Mods means dodgy driver don't you know?

;)

Insurance companies work on trends. I would imagine that modded cars are perceived to be higher risk than unmodded for good reason.

O/T but a random fact that ive just found out...

because of the "oddity" that is the Mazda RX8, insurance companies actually class the engine capacity as being a 2.6l.. strange but true!

Yeah anyone can find loads of "crash" photos of other small pokey hatchbacks...

All of the photos I posted were from THIS forum. You're right, anyone can use google

Privelege are just Direct Line in disguise, yes? Or do they specialise in a particular market, making their premiums different to DL?

Privilege used to be specifically for younger drivers with modified cars but I've never found their quotes any more competitive than the likes of other companies in the group, eg Tesco, DirectLine, etc.

Modified cars represent a bigger risk because if you're putting more power in the car than it was designed for, or fitting bigger brakes which will encourage you to travel faster, you're statistically more likely to bend it. How big that risk is will be down to the insurer's underwriters though....

Thats because it fires twice per plug per revolution.

on the other hand, a VRS is no more to insure for me than a 1300 fiesta was, both un modded.

What I have found annoying though is that insurance companies on renewal simply up the price year on year for no particular reason. Well above any infaltionary rise etc.

The only way to keep insurance sensible is to change companies almost yearly.

Oh and high mileage i.e. over 15k (not high in my eyes, but it is in theirs apparently) seem to be making a big diffeence to me lately.

"Would you like to add insurance to your Big Mac Meal for only £30"...

Sounds like the BA Students have found their calling

:sofahide:

Seriously though, the VRS fabia drivers down this way do seem a bit "special", I had one trying to out corner me on section of DC I know very well. I know you can't take the corner at more than a certain speed in my car, however the other driver apparently wasn't aware of this for his car, resulting in a NJI (Near Jason Incident).

I had something similar the other week; I was just doing my normal, everyday drive home and this Fabia came tanking up behind me and was right on my **** until we came to a bend (although it's more of a curve) and he was all over the place - it was like he'd never had to actually steer the car before  this went on until we got to a dual carriageway and our paths thankfully went in different directions

thankfully went in different directions

You went forwards and it seemed like he was going backwards?

he mustnt have had falken tyres...

But this would be the same if you went on any other car forums.

People with said cars will upload pictures of their crashed motors to that particular site making it very easy to find a crash pic for trols to use.

Google is easier, to trawl a site for crash pictures is plain ludicrous....do you not have other things to be doing? It proves absolutley nothing apart from the latter.

As for insurance. My insurance is fine, and I am very happy with it. What you need to do is shop for car insurance. Quoting using one company, child or sister companies is pointless as they most likely will use the same databases for the quotes.

There is a insurance company out there for everyone. You just have to find them

So is the Alfa twinspark capacity doubled too ?

thought my insurance was extreme at 250 quid for the Se- only pay 88 quid a year comp on my ducati. must be an age thing !!

He means two ignition cycles per revolution.

Back on topic, cars are so affordable these days with cheap credit etc, that most small cars are well within the reach of inexperienced drivers. If you've got a car with a bit of poke (and flawed handling  ) then it's going to get crashed by kids. Simple as.

Insurers insure based on probability - they don't know you or how you drive. If your particular model is popular with people who like crashing then statistically it may be 15% more likely to be involved in an accident. Therefore, on the basis of probability, should cost more to insure because the insurer is more likely to pay out on it.

Oh, I'm sorry. I'd forgotten that having been king of the road in your previous 1.2 Clio you're able to make fine judgements on the Fabia's shoddy handling and general poor performance.

My bog-standard vRS - 3 years old - costs me 3285 with max & protected NCB, Class 1 business use, wife as named driver, 15k miles per year. I'm a sprightly 60 year old and premium is higher than normal due to some health disclosures. Lincoln postcode seems attractive, too. My future son-in-law had a Superb. Premium for his Chelmsford postcode was massively less than if he'd had a Southend one. Location plays a big part.

Ouch!!!!! Imagine how much it would cost modded ;)

Surely there is a decimal point in the wrong place there and it should actually be £328.50 ??

Did you ever own one?

I have ;)

I pay just under £2,000 for my modded vRS with Admiral. I have declared my modification - and I am 19 years old with 2 years no claims. To be fair I have had my stupid moments in my last 6 months of car ownership but I like to think I have learnt from it.

I think the most prominent thing that keeps my speed in check is that I want to walk away from every journey I have in my car and be able to walk through my front door and have my Mum and friends see me in one piece. Not in the back of an ambulance or worse. At the end of the day if you crash and kill yourself; your nothing more then a statistic to most people. Nothing is learnt and nothing is gained. Everytime you drive you must know that if you do overcook it and kill yourself then its too late; you cannot learn anything anymore.

So.............just stepping away from the handbags just for a second......

Shop around Colin. Mine has gone down just with moving house. Maybe your area is worse than it was for car related crime? Who knows.....but I havent found mine going up. Obviously a few poeple have said it is, or has in their cases, but it could be a number of factors. I dont think a handfull of crashes would make the premium go up by so much myself. Having said all that, I am an old git with full no claims, and never crashed a car in my life.

Well, you do live on a posh estate now, Shifty - One which is frequented by accountants and Postmen.

A Fabia VRS? I've not owned one but I did have one for a half day test drive about 18 months ago to see what all the fuss was about. I was most unimpressed. It feels fast thanks to the peaky power delivery but thats about all it had going for it. The other faults are well documented on this site I'm sure.

To be honest, the boot is just way to small for me to even consider owning one.

Discuss...

In recent years i know of several fabia vRS's that have been crashed and written off, usually ending up on their roofs.. some of which as a result as some dubious driving.

Greenlight insurance + others have been refusing to cover them due to bad claims experience.. also by looking at some of the polls dotted round this site, that a large proportion of Fabia vRS owners are "young" drivers and alot of the cars have been modded. (wonder how many people have declared their mods?!)

im trying to renew my insurance for the 4th year of ownership, im 26 and have 9yrs ncb, no points/convictions and am horrified to find that insurance has gone up by average £200 over last year... the problem is i can now get insured on a different car, more than four times the value, and twice the power for less than i can on the Furby so im pretty confident to say, that im now having to pay for the unfortunate reputation the car is getting. especially now used prices are falling to "affordable" values and are being bought by the spotty **** brigade.

:thumbdwn::thumbdwn:

this is the last nail in the coffin for the vRS for me.. 4yrs and 100k miles of happy Fabia vRS motoring (i was one of the first on this site to get one when they came out in Sept 2003) the love has well and truly gone, and i refuse to pay over £450 to insure the thing... £100 more and i could get an evo 8 now

I think the car is a little unstable in standard form and to a certain extent modified as well. (nose heavy and all that).

Some people think it's better than the likes of Cooper S's etc and that's where they've had thier comeuppance.

My car costs little to insure and I am still happy with it and know it's limits and more importantly, mine.
