Weird cable found in dash - what is it?

Featured Replies

Removed my radio to see how cubby is mounted (see few threads below) and found odd cable behind the radio that doesn't seem to be connected anywhere. All the cables to stereo are present, including aerial.

Does anyone know what it is, where it should be connected and why is it just rattling freely behind my stereo?

Has the car ever had a carphone kit fitted? Might be from that.

As for the glovebox, it's held in by 4 Torx screws (Hayne's manual says five, but mine only had four). Just unscrew them and it should pull straight out.

Haynes is right ;)

Was the car used as a taxi previously?

Looks like it could be the remains of a taxi radio aerial cable.

I don't think it was used as taxi. 1.8T L&K not the most popular choice of a cab I would imagine, but tbh I don't see any CB aerial mounting points or anything like that.

As usual, nothing is straightforward. Must be something to do with the trim level fitted as mine only has four screw holes and four screws holding it in.

Either way, remove screws and pull out.. :P

it's an irrigation pipe that was stolen from an Oxfam convoy....

Looks more like a speedo cable that an electrical cable :P

At first I though it might be fuel door release cable or something, since the buttons are just above the radio, but those work on actuator in VAGs.

Ah  I keep on assuming that everyone else on here drives a vRS like me ;)

Could be a old pipe from a boost gauge etc common place to fit in the cubbyhole

follow it see where it goes !!might have a boost leak

Difficult to see too much from the pics but I'd be thinking Taxi'ing myself.

Is it a high miler?

i have a 1.8t L&K and have exactly the same cable behind my dash.

from what i know it has never been used as a taxi as there is no other evidence to point that way.

...maybe unlikely, but I have quote a few of these sorts of cables dotted about all over the place on my ex-policie vrs... including the splitter block thingy (technical me!) double-sided-taped to the quater panel which I cant seem to get off, at least without damaging the quater panel!!!

Factory fitted phone preparation kit?

I have that too. I was going to remove it but it seems to vanish into a factory-looking loom... so I left it.

could it have somot to do with sat-nav

could it have somot to do with sat-nav

Don't think so... I have sat nav in mine and it doesn't fit anywhere.

Its an aerial cable and is probably for DAB if the powered aerial has a second output/diplexer, the cars seem to have this type of plug fitted nowadays.

If it was previously a taxi there would be very little evidence.

You would never know any of my old cars were taxi's if I didn't tell you, no holes drilled, no wires cut & joined etc, makes them much easier to sell if people dont think it was a cab.

God knows why though, as a cab it will have been looked after much better than most cars!

Doesn't sound like thats what it is though to be honest, as too many people seem to have the same cable.

Hi,

Thats nothing to do with a Taxi that cable.

A radio for taxi has a PL259 plug(like for CB) or a BNC plug and they are bigger and are usually tucked behind the centre console like on mine.

Also its nothing to do with a Taxi meter either because they are long thin multiplugs of different colours

All taxi equipment in mine i used velcro to stick them in because i don,t want holes drilled all over the place, looks very ugly after removal of equip except for the hole drilled in my roof when the car was new to have a aerial fitted, that was upsetting to watch..

I think its probally a accesory option cable but for what i don,t know sorry.

Have a look at the base of the aerial on the roof, you will need to drop the back edge of the headlining ,and see how many cables come out ,there could be up to 3

radio, mobile phone, sat nav ,the sat nav aerial is easy to spot as it has a much bigger base this looks like a rf cable for a mobile phone .

If you also look at the option codes sticker there is a code for something like "prepared for mobile radio install" .If you also look at the yellowgreenblue connector it may have the extra wires for the mobile phone install as well

I would be much happier L&K was prepped for multifunction steering wheel as accessory to be honest. All bells and whistles, secret cables in dashboard but radio is still operated "digitally" (as in - by using me own digits to turn *****). :(

All makes of taxi meters use different cables and connectors, it does look like the old fashioned mechanical drive meter cable, albeit without the actual cable drive inside it, and if you break the end off a bnc connector it does look like that, however I have to agree in this case that it is unlikely to be anything taxi related.

I've been in the taxi industry years, I've fitted many cars out and run my own fleet of cabs, you'd be suprised what cars people use and a 1.8t Octavia wouldn't be particularly unusual, theres a couple of 1.8t Passats used as cabs locally!

I think basically it's an aerial cable, it's not sat nav as that is a much smaller cable and different connector, so that only really leaves telephone prep as I dont think DAB was ever an option?

I think it might be factory fitted phone preparation too. If you lower the rear of the headlining and see how many cables go to the roof aerial, if two you have a combined cellular/radio aerial.
