Do you use your handbrake when stationary at traffic junctions ?

Featured Replies

Yes, always.. one, i HATE people who sit at traffic lights with their foot on the brake while the brakelights burn holes in my retinas... and because i dont want to warp my brake disc by letting the heat transfer from the pads to the discs and create heat spots

...The fact that it is against the law, in contravention of the Highway Code..

I presume you mean the laws and code of the United Kingdom - I don't live there so they don't apply to me for 99.9% of my driving.

But when driving away from home (US, Canada, Mexico, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Belgium, The Netherlands and the UK) I adapt my driving to local laws and codes.

As to other drivers "assuming" I have broken down and attempting to pass me because my hazard lights are on, I would contend that they are the ones displaying the idiocy traits.

Hazard lights are well-named - they indicate there is a hazard of some kind on the road, therefore the responsibility of establishing the nature and extent of the hazard rests with the approaching driver(s). Any action taken by them in the absence of this knowledge is careless at best and maybe dangerous and irresponsible at worst.

if you were stopped with hazard lights on and a big gap in front of you wtf are we to think is going on:confused:yes we must be idiots to think you havn't broken down, end of arguement for me.

I assume you are saying that you are taking the responsibility of informing other road users that there is a junction and stationary traffic ahead  The signs, road markings, traffic lights and a varied assortment of of cars not moving should really be warning enough to any alert and qualified driver. In anticipating an approaching idiot you have strayed into idiocy yourself with your unilateral decision to exaggerate the level of hazard ahead, and thus created confusion which ultimately may create further hazard for yourself and others. I think every other poster in this thread has condemned your actions as lunacy, but I get the impression that you will stick to your guns no matter how many people criticise. I'm gonna leave it here with regards to you as I feel further discourse is pointless. Have a nice Christmas, and please drive safely :o

I put my handbrake when stationary the exceptio being when I I was in my sisters car (before the rear brakes got worked on) as sometimes the car would roll!!!

my pet hate at moment is people who you are following with their rear fogs on, for god sake im behind you i can see you and the next dozen cars, now turn it off before i run into the back of you cos its masking up your brake lights!!! rant over ;)

. (No-one has run into me from behind since I started to use it 8 years ago)

I have never used my hazards like that and never had any one run in the back of me in 30 years of driving !

If I saw someone "parked up" with hazards and aprox three car lenghs between the so said car and the next car I would assume you are not in the que for the lights, and if clear to do so would overtake.

as I would assume most others would!

also with the point of the handbrake, I dont use Footbrake, handbrake,or Clutch I just put it in "P" (Park)

Radiotwo

Not me :) Thats one of my pet hates

Me too :thumbup::thumbup:

Another of my traffic queue pet hates is the car who stops some distance behind the car in front, then once you've stopped behind, proceeds to trickle slowly forward. WHY, FFS? You're not getting on any faster! Just stop behind the car in front, put on the feckin handbrake, go into neutral and wait, you f**kwit :mad::mad::mad::mad:

I think most people need help distinguishing Fog from 'light mist' or haze. Visibility of half a mile doesn't need foglights, twunts.

If I am last in a queue of cars at an intersection / traffic holdup I will sit in the appropriate lane with my foot on the brake and my hazards flashing, with the car in neutral. I try to leave at least 2 to 3 car-lengths between me and the car in front.

Some posters don't seem to have read the first sentence of my original submission fully, which might have saved a bit of typing as it describes a particular set of circumstances; the words "If " and "queue" and "intersection / traffic holdup" are clues.

HAppy Christmas and have a Safe and Peaceful New Year.

If the traffic is moving off from the junction quickly then it's brakes but if the traffic is taking it's time I will engage the handbrake. Last in the queue it's brake lights every time and a cars length or two in front of me. People will interpret the third brake light much quicker.

If it's a stop for more than a few seconds I'll hold it on the hand brake, but put it in a gear ready for the off. If it's a short stop I'll not bother with the handbrake and just hold it on the foot brake. If I'm at the back of a queue I will tend to leave a good gap in front of me and sit on the foot brake (maybe flashing it a couple of times) until someone joins the back of the queue and then roll forward and put it on the handbrake.

Chris

I don't use the handbrake or foot brake.

Yes slow the car down with the brakes and then I just sit with the car clutch in/out depending if moving or not.

I find the Octy never moves or rolls anyway so not point in sitting with the brake/handbrake on

Although showing your brake lights helps other people to see you're stopped. :)

Chris

stick the brakes on and light up their faces ;) at least they cant deny noticing you were stationary

one time 3 of my colleagues were in a new Fiesta that got hit at 40 by a Volvo (the driver was fiddling with the radio) and it got pushed in front of an oncoming car. .

Was the driver not taught to NOT turn the wheels right until he had started actually turning right, to avoid this from happening? My driving instructor was very quick to point out when I turned the wheels to the right early...

In reply to the question, for the first 2 to 5 seconds I keep my foot on the foot brake, then put the handbrake on and release the foot brake.

Apologies for exhuming an old post, but I thought it was relevant to a question I have...

Reading through it, most of the comments seem relevant to driving a manual transmission. What would the procedure be at a junction in a DSG car? I might end up getting one in the next few weeks and it occured to me I've never actually found out how to drive an 'automatic' properly. Hire cars etc. I've driven I've just made it up as I go along but if I'm actually going to own one, I thought I'd better do a bit of research!:o

Always use the handbrake. Its nice to rest your legs.

Always use the handbrake.

However ( :) )...if you're stopped and you have your brake lights on, people below will be able to see that your stopped, and thus also (when the lights go out) when you're about to move off - so it's a good indicator to other road users. Additionally, if someone does drive into the back of you when stationary, the back of your car will lift off the road anyway, reducing the effectiveness of the handbrake (although I wouldn't expect someone could keep their foot effectively on a foot brake either in that circumstance!).

(although I wouldn't expect someone could keep their foot effectively on a foot brake either in that circumstance!).

Rob.

Having been in the situation where a knew I was going to get rear ended  and I didnt want to end up the **** of someone in front of me  and tried as much as I could to keep my foot on the brake pedal. It did work (in the sense I didnt hit the car in front) but if it would of been a bigger impact or it was unexpected then I doubt my foot would of stayed on the pedal.

Anyway who said I use the handbrake when stopped :P Find it very effective mid corner ;)

I apply the handbrake, put the car in neutral, turn off the ignition and get out. I then drive a series of 2m steel spikes into the surface of the road and connect high-tensile steel cables from these spikes to the towing points on the car. I then distribute flares onto the road around the car and set up and activate a 3-million-candlepower nautical strobe light to ensure that oncoming vehicles have no clue whatsoever what's going on.

Finally I deploy a giant robot stegosaurus in the other lane.

Using these techniques I have never, in 23,000 years, been rear ended at the traffic lights.

I originally missed this one completely:-

1) I'd use the h/b unless I was sure I'd only be stopped for a few seconds on level or downhill.

2) I'd use the brakelights as well whilst I was last in the queue, but come off it when I saw the next guy along braking.

3) Using hazard lights when stopped on any road has only one meaning in law, "I have broken down". Anyone who sees soneone with their hazards on and a useful gap ahead of them would be an idiot to not overtake if it is safe to do so. Anyone who is using hazards to say "I am the last vehicle in the queue for the traffic lights" is actually breaking the law!
