taking the plunge getting remapped !!!

Featured Replies

well my birthday is approching and i have been thinkng about a remap for my octy vrs from chipboost

now the question is what problems can arise after a remap? do i really need to change my dv or my n73 wotsit ,and does my insurance really need to be told ( ie do they check and how ) thats what putting me off as i can't afford the extra hike in insurance , i would love to do it all above board but i don't agree with them ripping us all off just for fitting a new air freshner

you thoughts please

My engine is completely standard and is fine with the remap. The extra power is just the ticket as I was never that impressed with the cars speed as standard. Ive started using Mobil 1 as a precaution to give the engine one better than Skoda recommend.

Enjoy once mapped, youll love it.

Declare the mod, only cost me an extra £40 ish.

Well hesitations a common problem and happened to me, (new plugs and coils solved it) along with a few others.

The n75 should be fine in standard form and can hold the extra boost no probs.

People recommend changing the dump valve for a piston type as the diaphragms on Bosch units split.I never had any problems though.

Remapped octys are great fun and you will have a big grin once complete.

Are you willing to tell us who will perform the remap?

Why not give your insurance company a call and ask a theoreticalquestion of how much extra it would cost post remap.

If it's too expensive then wait until your insurance is due for renewal and shop around.

Imagine if you had a accident and they found out about the map, a waste of time paying for your insurance and no payout! Always declare!!!!!

...,and does my insurance really need to be told ( ie do they check and how )...
Failure to make any material disclosure could invalidate your insurance. Whether or not insurers check is irrelevant to that requirement. Read the Financial Ombudsman Service Newsletter below for their view on fraudulent or deliberate non-disclosure.

I am also thinking about getting my vRS remapped, and asked a very knowledgable local mechanic about Mobil 1 for both the time being and after the remap, and he reckoned that it too thin for standard engines, and attacks seals. Which happened to him on a race prepared engine. Which has put me off using it totally...............

First Ive heard. Ive had it in for a year and havent used a drop.

Agreed - this was the first I had heard of this too.

I asked him as he has worked on the car for the previous 2 owners, and has known the car from new, and I had only heard good things about Mobil 1.

Until then.......

well it looks like I'm fooked !!!! my conscience got the better of me and i called my ins comp they won't do mods (more> than by the way) its only costing me £360 fully comp for me and the wife ,and the cheapest i could get with the mod was £600 squid (Adrian flux) so its not worth it really

its a damm shame !!!!!!

I'll just have to try and save up some more pennies i guess

can any of you suggest a good ins comp that do mods cheap:)

insurance company's need to sort themselves out and stop ripping us off t**t's:finger:

Adrian Flux were expensive for me, Im insured with Chris Knott.

More-than wouldn't insure me and i have a clean license never had a conviction or any points. They said my job was too dangerous. Hastings direct were the beast for me. I pay about 420ish.

i was talking to a guy i know the other day he's a vehicle inspector for the police and i asked him, when he examines a car does he check to see if it has been re mapped he told me never as they are never re mapped beyond the cars capabilities .

so my question is would you insurance comp check ?i think not,

has anyone heard of someone being caught out by there ins comp checking ?

there just scaring us into paying more dosh coz they can .:finger:

why do we have to pay more for just an increase in bhp are we more likely to crash or is the car more likely to be stolen (do we put a sticker in the window advertising the fact its been re mapped no!! )

the two biggest factors with insurance are you age (the younger you are the more likely to write it off) and your postcode (chances of it being nicked )

who says we have to pay more? the ins governing body ?or the ins comps themselves ?

so to me its all a big con to get more of our hard earned

rant over

if anyone has some answers post em up !!

Mate! ive had remaps in the past and never told insurance company, it's up to you if you want to risk it!

This got me thinking the other day when i've decide to take the plunge...a lot of tuners advertise that the "new map" is invisible to the garage when it's in for servicing, how they going to find out?? if thats the case unless the insurance company really does not want to pay out and spend alot of time analysing the car they're going to find nout.

From previous expearance (non skoda and a close friend) the Insurance guy will only look for spotting if the car looks normal, (bonnet get lifted if you lucky) and if any damage ties up with the claim, internal engine mods wont get spotted unless yoiu have brighly coloured pipes etc and carbon boxes, body kits etc you have no chance in hiding. Or suspicions that it's "highly tuned"

I think one of the main reasons is that modifications may effect the cars value.....if i was spending £2000 on an uprated engine, i'd want it added to the insurance in case of a total loss.

totally agree there mate

If it's a serious accident with threat of a large payout for personal injury it would be in the insurers' interests to investigate. In any event you'd be best to declare it, as others have posted it doesn't necessarily mean a huge increase in premium but could mean the difference between being insured, not being insured and possibly having insurance refused in the future if your policy is cancelled due to a fraudulent claim.

Adrian Flux were expensive for me, Im insured with Chris Knott.

Same here

Knowledgeable and understanding outfit, appear to take each application on it's own individual merit too. Mine is a tad over £400 with downpipe/Cat/exhaust/ suspension parts in addition to the remap.

Me too iam with chris knott. They met my best quote and gave an extra 10% off for being a brisky member.

If you can't go the modified route, just buy a faster, more capable car :)

thats always been my advice to others ,if you want a faster car go out and buy one ,i was just a bit p****d off at the ins comps really

If you think your Insurance is high my Octavia 4x4 1.8T is around £600!!! That's the best I could get!!! Its my area and a bump.

I would check and be willing to pay more...if they give the car to a Skoda Specialist and he drives the car he will know and as someone already mentioned if you are responsible for a crash and cause injury the Insurance company may find out not cover and your are in bad shape and serious trouble!!!!

I personally wouldn't get it remapped without it being specifically covered on your insurance. I was all set for a remap this year but it would put my insurance from £380 to £540odd which for me isn't worth it. I will shop around for insurance next year but Privilege do me a good quote and offer unlimited business use at no extra cost which is a real plus point for me.

As for the vehicle being inspected after a crash I wouldn't be worrying about the police vehicle inspector its the one the insurance company would send round who will be looking for reasons not to pay out.

thats my problem my ins only cost me £380 for me and the wife thats really cheap but if i went with a ins comp that does mods it would cost me £500 plus the price of the re map

Sounds like we're in the same boat Mr Monkey Man:O

Standard car = reasonable quotes

Remapped car = totally unreasonable quotes

I'd like to see the statistics surrounding remapped cars. What percentage, for example, of cars with remaps (disclosed ones at least:rolleyes:) are crashed?

If it is a ridiculously high number then I could accept the hike in insurance. If however it isn't too many, then the quotes are out of proportion.

I would have thought that most people on here with remaps manage to get to the end of the road on a regular basis without stuffing themselves into a wall or through a hedge every 100 yards or so....

But as was said, we should just buy a faster car in the first place.:D
