Engines f#*#*d

Xzylo

Recommended Posts

So after having a variety os issues with my car the last few weeks. Changed sparks etc and didnt seem to help all the while it was using lots of oil.

Put into Skoda this morning hes phoned me back and said the engine has been worn from exsessive burning of oil. Hes contacted them skoda have agreed goodwill on it for me to being cost to me down from £5,500 to £1,100. Seeming as its out of warrenty this actually doesnt sound to bad to me.

Thoughts?

Oh dear, where do I start!

First of all, sorry to hear your car has a goosed engine!

Secondly, how much oil was it burning? Age of the car? What exactly has 'worn'?

£1100 is a good price..but what does that cover? Just a new engine block and fitting? Really, you shouldn't have to pay a penny as it is well documented that this engine is prone to excessive oil burning causing problems like you are having.

I bought it from a non skoda dealer about 4 months ago at about 28k miles. Put it in for major service and health check (as it had never been serviced by skoda) at 29k.

Was told all is well everything came back green on health check. Then last 2 weeks been playing up so put it in. All contact been over the phone so far today but he said engines badly worn due to oil consumption will need more or less a whole new engine.

Cost would normally be £5,500 hes already spoken to Skoda who agreed goodwill to bring cost to me down to £1,100.

Thing im thinking is unless all the damage has been done in the last 2k miles then they didnt do a very good health check. It was still under warrenty from the place i had bought it from back then i could of taken it back and swapped it for something else of they had spotted it issues then.

Could normally be £4,000 to £4,500 or even less when Skoda / VOLKSWAGEN are Paying.

So they are asking you to bend over and assume the position.

£5.500 is an Engine and a new DSG when Skoda UK are paying for it..

Lying Barstewards.

Aye, a double shafting - making a profit on a replacement engine when they installed the original that wasn't fit for purpose.

I'm surprised that they agreed to make a (substantial) contribution when the car doesn't have a Skoda service history - fair play to them on that at least.

So is it worth phoning up skoda customer services and making a fuss? Try and get it even cheaper or ideally free? Seeming as it was given a complelty clean bill of health by skoda 2k miles ago.

Or as it doesnt have full skoda service history just keep stom and take a new engine for £1,100?

Yes.

The Dealership that sold you the car knew the Service and warranty history on the car.

What was done according to the Service Regime / Schedule / Guidelines.

Skoda UK know the Fundamental Design, Manufacturing, Component Choice and Quality Control Failings.

I will bump the thread be vrskeith on Consistent Treatment.   Which Skoda UK just take the pith with.

George - Xzylo didn't buy the car from a Skoda dealer though - it then went through a *cough* 'health check' at a Skoda dealer - as far as I'm aware a 'health check' is just a visual check (tyres, fluids, brake discs etc.) that the dealer does out of the kindness of his heart when a car is in for a service - the cynical may suggest it is merely an 'upsell' opportunity, but not me  :notme:  .

Edit: Out of interest what year is the car?

Skoda's offer doesn't seem too bad - others on here have been point-blank refused any contribution because their car didn't have full Skoda service history - however, no harm in chancing your arm to see if there's any more give on Skoda's part. A work colleague had total engine failure on a twin-charge Scirocco which he had owned from new - it was newer than your car (one year out of warranty) and with full VW service history - his contribution was similar to yours (after quite a bit of haggling).

It really depends on how much of a fuss you want to make, in theory you shouldn't have to pay a penny. But if you want an easy life (I wouldn't blame you!) then take the £1100 on the chin and atleast have some restbite knowing that you have a new engine block fitted that shouldn't have any oil burning issues.

When they are running fine, they are great cars.

I sold my VRS due to oil, and engine issues. Before selling/trading in I complained to Skoda UK, escalated it to one of the CEO's, and I got offered no goodwill at all, this was on a 2010 39K car will Full Skoda service history, that has the oil jets, and breathers done in Nov last year under good will.

I got told as the car had good wlll applied last year there was no chance of getting any this time. I argued that the work done last year obviously hadn't solved the issues (as the car only just scraped by an oil consumption test after the work), I argued if the work had been done to solve the Oil consumption issue in Nov, why did it only just pass a consumption test. They admitted it should have been investigated more in November, as it shouldn't have used oil after the breather and Jet mod, but they still refused any good will.

Now I'm sure people would say I could have got some contribution/good will if I complained more tried to drag it out etc, but by that point I'd lost confidence in the car and didn't want to drag it on for weeks. I spoke to a friendly VAG technician, and he said best case if I dragged it out I may get Skoda to pay some of it, but not all of it, and I didn't want to put anymore cash into the car, I was quoted £4500-5000 for the new engine by SUK.

So in light of the above I would say the offer you have is very good, and I doubt they will pay the full amount even if you did complain.

They pay the full bill.

You get an Independent Expert report on the Engine, and you get a Solicitor to start a court action against them.

It can go to a Court in England / Wales,  or one in Scotland and the Volkswagen Group can put up their experts to say there was no known Fundamental Design, Manufacturing or Component Choice & Quality Control failing that they knew of while the cars were within the Original Manufacturers Warranty.

They tend not to want to go to court. They tend not to want Independent Experts Reports in a EU Court.

Or just pay out £1,100 and you have a new engine, and that has a 2 year warranty on it,

and the Dealerships work is guaranteed.

They 'VW Group lawyer or expert / representitive ' would have to say in court just how many of the 2,800 Skoda Twinchargers in the UK have required replacement engines and some even more than one replacement.

Then how many failures among the other 4,000 or so Twinchargers in the UK from VW, Seat and Audi between 2009-2016 with engine failures.

Not to mention the others in various world regions.

Car is well out of warranty and not been serviced by skoda so on balance I think £1100 for a new engine is reasonable. I'd probably take that offer (or try and punt the car on in the meantime lol).

The place I bought it from is now a long drive from me about 70mins with no traffic.

And skoda garage is less than 2 miles away from my house. So really couldnt be doing with all that travel to have the dealership i bought it from look at it. As they are not a Skoda dealer anyway i think it would be more hassel than its worth.

Havent heard from Skoda today but have been given a courtesy car free of charge which ive been told i can have as long as it takes. So frankly atm i dont really care how long it takes and im actually pretty impressed with the service ive recieved so far.

Considering car is out of warrenty and all. The dealer contacted Skoda on my behalf to get goodwill for me which was all secured within 2.5 hours of me putting the car into the garage. I think my case was probably helped by the fact i put it in for major service only 2k miles ago.

I'm imagining its a problem the dealer has seen before as he acted on it so quickly and I think Skoda by this point are probably fed up of arguing with twincharger owners.

£1,100 is a lot of money I know, but its not all that bad for a potentially brand new/ refurbed engine Im hoping they just give me a CTHE unit rather than another CAVE with the new bits and bobs. And i will be pushing for at least 2 years warrenty on the new engine and all works being carried out.

Quite nice to know if it goes wrong again they are seemingly happy to give courtesy car free of charge. Seems i am lucky in having a decent Skoda garage 2 miles from home.

While £1,100 is a fair dunt (and all the more painful because you're having to cough up at the beginning of ownership) in the grand scheme of things it's not a huge sum of money these days - I think all things considered you've done pretty well - a two-year warranty would be excellent for peace of mind - happy motoring!

But is does not.

It comes with a VW Original Part 2 year warranty.

And only if you buy it or pay towards it, or a Warranty Company does if you have an Warranty from one.

If replaced under Manufacturers Warranty only until the original Warranty Expires,  which might be days, weeks or months.

BUT,

You get onto Customer Services and get a Secret Skoda / VW Deal and an Extended Warranty, and other Goodwill Gestures, paid your expenses etc because they messed you about for 2 Oil Consumption tests or such.  Because they know they would lose in court because they had Fundamental Design, Manufacturing, Component Choice and Quality Control Failures and Failures of Software, and even Replacement Engines they supply have had these.

VORSPRUNG DURCH TECHNIK.

PS

Skoda in the UK might come with a 3 year warranty, that is not true of all New Skoda world wide.

Was it in 'Aeroplane' he said 'dont call me Shirley' ?

Car is still in the garage phoned me yesterday to say will be in all weekend and possibly into middle of next week. Got a horribly slow Diesel Octavia in the mean time.

Been looking at possibility of selling as frankly i need a car i can rely on day in day out and i don't think these twin-chargers are ever going to be capable of that....Wish I'd kept my A3 now or gone for the Octavia vRS which is what i wanted to start with but were slightly out of the price range and didn't want one with 80,000+ miles

Icing on the cake is now being made redundant in February so cant justify to spending out anymore to get something else would have to be more or less a straight swap at a dealer would be lucky to get £6k p/x value looking at current prices...

Anyone got any jobs going? :D

You should be fine with the replacement engine in.

All the best getting work.  What kind of job are you after?

Well I've just spent 3 years training to be a flour miller 2 years of which was as an apprentice earning £5 p/h when money finally went up to nearly £30k a year I decided to treat myself to a nice new car as was supposed to be a job for life. Didn't foresee the owners selling the site to property developers however...

Ideally would like to stay in the trade but quite a niche job market and no other mills very close by. Cant really afford to move at the moment and with the crappy fuel economy from the fab commuting would put petrol cost through the roof... but i would do any work really ...not sure may even sell the car and get a van and do courier work or something.
