  1. In the UK 95RON fuel IS E10 so all the Octavia owners here who have been filling with 95RON have been filling with E10 for many years. Even our 97/98/99RON is E5.
  2. See pins 9 & 10 of the 13 pin socket. The fridge should be wired to pin 10 which is supposed to be ignition switched.
  3. But sadly most UK homes only have a single phase supply, and in my experience most US home have a dual 110V at 180 degree phase supply (giving 220V for tumble dryers and washing machines).
  4. The 1.5 ACT TSI needs a very special tool (that is expensive) and takes a lot longer than a 1.4 TSI (non-ACT) hence the much higher cost. Because Skoda UK were out of line with all other parts of the VAG empire worldwide!
  5. Find a new dealer, for two reasons: 1) the advice regarding cambelt replacement was changed by Skoda UK several years ago so 5 years is no longer valid. 2) on the 1.4 & 1.5 engines the cambelt and water pump are on opposite ends of the engine so replacing them both together is not needed or advised.
  6. Seems highly unlikely that an ECU would suddenly fail, far more likely to be a sensor or wiring if nothing mechanical or fuel related.
  7. No, CarPlay came in with the MIB2 infotainment which was introduced in around May 2015 on the Octavia 3.
  8. ... and expect to wait several years before the maps are updated. I submitted a similar change request to Here a few years ago and it took 5 years for the change to appear!
  9. Not all engines have factory mapping that allows them to take advantage of higher octane fuel.
  10. Lithium batteries won't be under our control until we have an industrial scale source of Lithium in the UK, which seems many years off. Totally agree about tidal, places like the Pentland Firth have enormous potential to generate significant amounts.
  11. You are taking one sided view of who funds research papers, I'm not going to do your research for you but there are multiple organisations worldwide that are wanting to pursue a climate change agenda who have funded many papers. Here's one example - Al Gore has created organisations with significant funding (mostly from high worth individuals) much of which has been spent on funding research as well as activism and public speaking.
  12. Because of the Battery Management System there is no one answer to that. Just after starting the BMS will tell the alternator to produce typically 14-14.5V to top up the battery after starting, if you turn off the engine soon after starting the rest voltage could be over 14V. But when driving once the battery has been topped up the alternator could only be producing 12-12.5V, so again after turning off the rest voltage could be as low as 12V.
  13. Peer review relies on the peers being independent, but since the majority of the peers are themselves receiving funding from "interested bodies" they cannot be seen to be independent. So the peer review process has, by pressure from the same lobbying bodies, become untrustworthy. My Professor at university was deeply concerned about this starting to happen back in the late 1970's so this is not a new problem, and one which there is no desire to tackle because of this "funding dependent on the correct conclusions" effect.
  14. Early or late 2015? Early 2015's have MIB1 infotainments which cannot support Android Auto, later ones have MIB2 system which need a SwAP code to enable AA. Worth getting in touch with @pab567 for more information.
  15. That is the case, the requirement to "make a noise" was for all new Type Approvals not all new builds. Vauxhall took advantage of a similar "loop hole" regarding DRLs which allowed them to continue selling many vehicles without DRLs after 2014 when that requirement came into force.
  16. One example, before Copernicus the overwhelming consensus was that the Sun, Moon and planets orbited around the Earth - so consensus is not a good basis on which to completely change any significant factor of society such as our methods of personal transport. Very often history shows that it was the outcasts and pariahs who the long term has proved to be closer to the truth, not saying that's the case here but it's a good reason not to discard the views of the scientific minority.
  17. That graph says nothing about the source of the funding so I don't see how you can use it to support your assertion that the funding is unbiased?
  18. Remember there have been many examples in history where scientists have been accused (wrongly) of being the Luddites. Credibility in scientific reports comes from independence, and there have been so many cases where scientists have failed to get funding for research projects offering an unbiased study into climate change consequences and causes. Why is there such a problem with getting funding for independent reports without a foregone conclusion? Because there is virtually no independent funding available, it all comes from companies, quangos, lobby groups, etc. with a defined agenda who don't want questions raised about the validity of their public statements. That doesn't make me a climate denier or a Luddite, just someone with a scientific background of nearly 3/4 of a century who has read so many reports that have proven to be inaccurate because they started out with a foregone conclusion, that in the fullness of time turned out to be inaccurate or in extreme cases just plain wrong.
  19. They are security measures introduced by VW Gorup in accordance with UNECE regulations. SFD1 locks changes on some electronic modules until an online verified code is received from the VW servers. SFD2 goes further in that changes can only be made when actually online to the VW servers.
  20. Sorry no, I've always done it the official way.
  21. Only a dealer or independent garage with online access can officially remove Component Protection, but there are also some "hacks" possible.
  22. That's because even when connected to the car by Android Auto the phone map apps such as Maps and Waze still use the phones GPS antenna.
  23. Plus the costs for in-production white goods are scary too - recently my Bosch tumble dryer refused to work showing an error code that required a new control board. Cost? - £350!!! As a retired electronics engineer I asked the repair technician to leave the replaced control board with me so I could investigate. The failed component? - a £0.50 relay...
  24. Electronics might not have macro moving components but to describe them as inert is a total misunderstanding - they generate heat, require mechanical mountings (solder, circuit boards, etc.), need connectors subject to heat and corrosion, etc. Most people cannot repair, or even diagnose, faulty electronics and that will be the cause of most EVs being scrapped even when their mechanical components and bodywork are still in good working order.
