  1. moderators are very kind and helpful folk around here, when you ask politely
  2. So, i was able to get up and out on Saturday morning, and tackled long hill again, but.. i took a ledt at the top and spun out the Northern, lower bit that i can see from my house. it was a nice little detour, longer than i expected, and from the total climb stat more extra incline than i thought to get back up to the peak to head for home. my house is down there... somewhere the detour is from the top of the hill to the right where the teail winds up, out the start of the big gradient to the left. that hill poking out dead centre from the shed then, my MIL arrived and said she wanted to bring Spud sr for a walk , but he could cycle, in the woods on "a trail thats very flat" so i went too, and brought Jr in the ergobaby carrier, as i didnt want nanny struggling with Sr on his bike solo, if he was too fast or whatever. it was not flat! i logged the way back out, spud struggled to hold the brakes on the downhills, and had to push his single gear bike back up most of it... i was melted carrying jr to the point of needing fresh jocks when i got home... never again
  3. missing a couple of updates... so, Wed was a normal rest day, nothing but... swmbo had another medical consultation appointment on Tuesday about some of the ongoing longer term fall out from spud jr pregnancy... 19months later, and still suffering bull****. outcome of that was being put on the cancellation list for a procedure to hopefully sort a couple of them out. she got home at 4pm, and got a call at 430 - slot available thurday morning, but she had to go for Pre-Op assessment on Wednesday.. i said do it.. dont put it off, itll be grand. she has already put this off a couole of times to try other solutions as she out of the blue developed a random phobia of the gen anaesthetic, convinced herself shed go to sleep and wouldnt wake up, she'd just be dead. so after a stressful couple of days involving much convincing that sge wasnt going to die on the table, my Thur and fri morning cycles were cancelled, as she had to be gone before 7am on wed and thur. procedure was fine, shes still tired and sore after it but gone to work today 🤞but i stayed home friday morning too to make sure she was alright which want easy.. shes the worlds worst patient and geumpy when not 100%
  4. Hi Pat i cant help with your questions, but fair play to you for keeping the auld donkey alive a mod will help though, by moving the thread to the mk1 octy section... wont you, @john999boy?
  5. genuinely the law of diminishing returns says there is no way the fidelity difference between the 2600 quid cable vs a 50 version is 52 times better...
  6. yeah, i think its an internal issue with the ratchet ring on the shifter. its bizarre that its only affecting one gear change though
  7. so i was out this morning, and had a weird issue. after a nice flat out bit of rough track on my smallest chain ring, i hit the shifter to pop up a couple of rings as i hit the climby bit at the end. it clicked through 3 ratchets then a mild pop, and it never changed up. i went again and it went up a ring on the first ratchet click. went for another and i got the shifter pushing through like it was disconnected. tick, tick, tick, then click and up it went to the next ring. then the whole way up and down the cassette it moved on the first click. but again coming back up the rings from 2nd to 3rd smallest its triple "skipping" then biting on a fourth ratchet click i didnt even know the lever had the range to do, then fine again first click to the biggest ring. im gonna check the warranty details tomorrow as its at most 18months old, and get onto SRAM about it. but, anyone had a similar problem so i can better explain it to them? a google earlier on found some mtb forum threads on similar issues, but they all seemed to lose all shifting, not just a hard shift on one gear. as you can imagine, with a couple of steep hills between me and home when it happened until i sussed out the "4th click" shift i was bricking it, given it looked like i was gonna be pushing the bike up some grades, and be late home... on spud sr's 1st day back in school. i wouldve been sleeping in the shed for a month!
  8. got another good spin today, through the woods. lost a little time on the return leg, i cayght up with 3 people on horseback on my highspeed downhill tarmac section. i didnt want to spook any of them (ive been on a spooked horse... its not fun..) so out of politeness i backed off and kept a good 50-100m gap until they could move into a nice wide gateway. the other technical hiccup was a weird issue with my shifter, that ill post a thread on to explain properly.
  9. this morning I headed up the cross as usual, but then headed west for a bit of woodland treking. 2 reasons, 1, i decided to change routes from going up the steep hill every time the last couple of weeks 2, i realised if i didnt do a couple of longer routes i was going to just miss completing the august "favourite way 200km" challenge by about 10k. it was a nice ride out, though there has been a definite temp drop in the morning, it was noticeably cooler on the way up.
  10. your elevation gain and distance pretty much match my most mornings routes 😅 though tbf, the first couple of kms of mine is on tarmac, so bit less hardship than the gravel, and my average gradients are only about 10-15% looks majestic up there though, i cant wait until little guys are a bit older, and i can make time to take weekend mornings to **** off a bit of a distance and rack up some genuine mountain miles...
  11. got TWO bonus pedals today. the 5.5k with Spud sr earlier on. which was just good crack. and then, i had ti go collect my car from the mechanic - not a long journey, but just a grand little blast. kept the speed up as much as i could abd it paid off another PR set
  12. we walked to a safe start point, didnt have the same of time as the last day, so didnt go as far, but had longer playing on the embankment slopes at the park. is this strava art?
  13. a nearly decent nights sleep.i woke at 5... and struggled to sleep again. up on time though and out early enough to make the full Long Hill Peak route. in under an hr... new best on the route i also set a new personal best on the Long Hill full segment (unnamed road). not on the climb though it all felt like a really good ride out. weather was good, mentally in a good space sayin hello to the sheep. only downer - shout out to the LA crew that tar and chipped the top of the road section yesterday to take out potholes, grand job done, should last a good 6months. wish ye hadnt spread the 15Tonnes of excess 10mm as an uncompacted 6in layer of stone along the trail to the stile for The Cross. tougher pedalling across that flat 80yds of gravel than it was on the steep road bit on the way up!
  14. yeah, hes so proud of himself. he also thought it was amazing when i popped a couple of wheelies on the way back but he knows hes not allowed tell his mammy, and im not teaching him how to do it until hes older
  15. Spud Sr on his first Blue Way adventure last night... 6 1/2, got the bike last summer but the winter was fairly **** for pedalling, and he wasnt really feeling it, so stabilisers only gone 2 months ago... and an 8.5k cycle done even let him drop down the rough stuff of the embankment when we were at the park. its maybe a 5ft drop it was colossal thing for him no pics of that though,
  16. sone one of these days in gonna get 8hrs sleep, be up at 6, and have a stonking hreat ride. ill take todays ride for now.. late outta the blocks, so only the main climb of Long Hill, but.... need to sonehow find a full minute to "make the podium" and an engine to get KOM on it. i reckon the guy with the fastest time on the section mustve got a duff gps track, its 3mins faster than me and 2mins faster than the guy in second... good blast out though all in all
  17. yesterday was meant to be my rest day but... i had to drop my car back to mechanic for him to fit replacemwnt wishbone bushes and replace a cv boot because of a tiny tear the nct inspector spotted. so, i got a 5.5k bonus flat riverside pedal in yesterday afternoon, strava logged n all. then last night i went cycling with spud sr. convinced him we could walk over to by the river and cycle along a bit of the Blue way. ended up cycling as far as ferry house and back, aka nearly all of my 9km running route he was fairly knackered when we got home, but had a great time. i shouldve strava logged it 🤦‍♂️ it wouldve netted me 14km bonus pedalling for the week.
  18. I got a worldwide fastest segment crown today
  19. smashed it... 11seconds faster down the hill than yesterday! put me in a right good mood heading to a site meeting. esp as it being a non WFH day, i have to be home earlier to get geared up and head off, so it was only up to the top of the steep bit of long hill, not the whole way across the top to the proper peak. nearly ended up in another bush on the way back down again too... ground is getting soft up there now, with all the recent rain and less drying out time. so traction on the steep tracks is getting harder to find, and the grass being wet on the way down.... uh-oh's are gonna be more frequent i think...
  20. oh edit.. i forgot that on Friday morning i ended up in a bush 🙃 wet grass, downhill... rear wheel locked up and i just ended up sliding about 30yds hoping to make the turn...i didnt quite make it and ended up in a reasonably soft bush.
  21. no visibility on Long Hill today or at the cross on the way back down... cloud starting to break up just before i headed back down.. mmmmbbaaaaaaa........
  22. today was a tidy pedal to the proper long hill summit. 43m 38 to get there. and then took my headphones out and just sat for a few mins. there was low cloud, so about 20yds of visibility but for tge first time ive been up there absolutely no wind. it was silent, and visibility empty. i heard 2 sheep baaa in the middle distance, that was it. early enough and far out from town enough to have no traffic noise. it was strangely comforting and pleasant to be there in total isolation and just absorb the nothing. i then set a new pb on the descent stage that is the all time 2nd fastest descent (on strava) 5 secs behind the KOM. if id slept a bit better last night probably wouldve cracked that as fastest wirldwide.
  23. okay, so.... i nearly got a proper night sleep Thursday, so i managed to get out again friday morning. i was a little bit later than i wanted getting out, and i had to go the actual office to chair some meetings while my boss is on AL so i cut the hill route short, only going to the top of the horrible climb. it was a nice pedal even though i was sweating buckets the whole way up in 17deg heat and humidity and rain, which made it tough.
  24. yup... the quickjack load spread is much better than the 2 post option....
  25. feck that shower of chancers! an entire replacement window regulator (the panel they are talking about) can be got for about 40-50quid. i only got one a few months back for my octy as the cable had snapped. and a lock mech is only 30odd quid for a perfecrly fine ebay chinese special. they are hoping to either put you off or make up the profit on the job as it is very awkward to get into the door when its locked shut i still reckon you have a wiring problem above anything else. most likely a frayed or snapped negative wire in the door bellows... edit... 3rd option for the garage - they dont really know what they are doing, if they are saying the window will smash trying to get in passed the regulator...
