What does this small Red cross indicate?
That’s what I’d thought but don’t understand why the globe is still white, not grey. But then why have two means (grey globe and red cross) of telling us there is no connection.

Compass issue on satnav?
Sounds like a s/ware glitch to me. Have you tried a hard reboot? If not, hold the power button (left end of volume slider) for 10+ seconds until it restarts.

1.5 TSI e-TEC 150PS DSG ACT Estate - Thoughts
I downsized from a 1.4tsi Superb mk2 hatch to a manual 1.5tsi mk4 Octavia estate (2020 so not the latest, nor the etec). Space in the boot is fantastic; rear legroom notably less, headroom fine. Performance is more than adequate even when fully loaded and mechanically has proven reliable over 65k miles. My early s/ware issue won’t be relevant if you’re looking at a FL mk4.5. My car is incredibly economical for a petrol, averaging over 57mpg since I bought it. From what I read the etec is capable of similar. Having spent nearly five years in this forum I’m not aware of any issues with the 1.5 etec and DSG other than early models with a 12V battery drain issue. Software updates seem to have that sorted though. To sum up, I’d say my mk4 is the best car I’ve ever had, perhaps not the most fun to drive but after 50 years of driving I don’t really need that any more!

CarPlay question
Regarding #4, the iPhone can only connect to the car by Bluetooth OR CarPlay. So I guess when tethered it presumably Bluetooth connects to the car hence you see the list of contacts. Once you connect via CarPlay, then the Bluetooth drops and you lose the contacts list in the car. The system ’assumes’ if CarPlay is connected then hands free calls are made by using Siri.

Insurance shocker!
And make sure cover is like for like. The devil is in the detail.

Answering a phone call
In which case I have no experience, mine being a 2020 model. Hopefully some else will be able to advise.

Apple Car Play - Navigation Volume
I reckon there are several ways in which the Maps directions might be silenced. In the CarPlay settings screen (accessed through the cars infotainment screen) Silent Mode settings. I have set mine to mirror the iPhone. Whilst navigating with Maps (in the car) tap the screen and a Speaker icon appears in the top left, just below the routes icon. Tap the speaker. Select from three levels of notification/alert. The bottom one is none. Whilst navigating with Maps (directly on the phone, not CarPlay screen) tap the up-arrow in the bottom right of the screen to display Route Options. One of those is Voice Volume. Other thoughts… Restart your iPhone. Very occasionally I have no sound from Music, Spotify, nor Maps. Restarting the phone and reconnecting CarPlay had sorted it. I think the infotainment system remembers volume settings for different sources. So for example, built satnav is different to the radio. Maybe CarPlay is one of the sources is differentiates. Does Music/Spotify play at normal volume but not Maps?

Answering a phone call
Yep, a steep learning curve with the mk4. When I got mine I spent at least an hour sat in it with the manual, my iPhone and a mug of coffee. Went through all the infotainment menu options in turn trying to work out what they did and how they did it. After a week while did the same to tweak settings that it thought I wanted but realised I’d set ‘sub-optimally’ (eg interior & ambient lighting).

But isn’t using Siri, or the android equivalent, a better option? Less looking at a display and less twiddling with a roller.

CarPlay question
I’m pretty sure that once CarPlay is active it is an exclusive WiFi link effectively disabling any other WiFi connection. I, for example, can’t sync videos from my dashcam to the app if CarPlay is active; as soon as I disable it, all is ok with the dashcam sync. Kinda frustrating…. This might be the root of the issue you have with tethering; I suspect CarPlay kicks in and kicks out the tethering. Never tried it so can’t be sure.

Anyone actually happy with their MK4? 😂
Nope, they need to come with an 11 year old same as when we first got a VCR… 😂😂

Battery life on pre facelift cars
I’m aware some folk have had 12V battery issues but thought it was only mHEV (e-Tec) and PHEV versions. Could be wrong though. Mine is a 1.5tsi, 2020 model, registered Sept ‘20. Currently on 65,000 miles and the battery has not shown any issues to date. I do tend to drive long journeys though - already done 1500 miles this month.

Does this apply equally if using CarPlay, AndroidAuto or generic Bluetooth connection?

Anyone actually happy with their MK4? 😂
In its very early days mine was in and out of the dealer more times than I care to remember - lots of investigations etc but they NEVER charged me for a courtesy car; they waived the fee because it was under warranty.

Really want a Mk4 VRS but...
OK, mine isn't a VRS but shares the same infotainment system; was a complete 'mare in the early days but has been rock solid for a couple of years since getting upgraded to v1941 by the dealer. Now it's out of warranty I'd have to pay for it to be done or follow the DIY method outlined on here - and accept the risk of bricking the car. The way I see it, the benefit is little, the risk likelihood is low, the risk impact is high - so why bother. v1941 works fine (for me). My car lacks a few toys compared to the VRS, such as matrix headlights & roadsign recognition which had issues in the early years of a mk4. ACC, SOS, blindspot detection, all work fine (now). As others have said, the mk4 is a very good, highly capable, and fuel efficient car; and in estate form a brilliant load lugger. Aim to buy new or an Approved Used model which should have all software updates applied before delivery.

Users and personalisation
Hmmm... Been a while since I did mine; maybe need to turn on the ignition whilst setting it up, turn it off, then lock the car. Thinking this may initiate the saving/sync of the personalisation. Sorry to be a bit vague...

Users and personalisation
Short answer, Yes, for seats and door mirrors. Though as always the devil is in the detail. Firstly, there is no actual need to set up a second user. My wife uses our second key and the seat moves to her last position when opening the drivers door. We don't have a second user set up in the Infotainment system. This however, is dependent on which key is used to lock it and unlock it, and a setting in the Infotainment. Somewhere buried in there is an option to enable personalisation, which IIRC is the default, (sadly I can't remember where it is off the top of my head and am away form the car at the moment). Then, driver 1 unlock the car with their key, seat the position of the seat, and at the end of the journey lock the car with the same key. Driver 2 repeats the process with their own key. After that each key will bring its own personalisation. There is no need to store the seat position either, though it makes life easier should the personalisation be lost (which it does from time to time). For CarPlay, the system reconnects to the previous iPhone if it is in range, I assume similar for Android. For 'Favourites' (radio, SatNav, etc) then I think you'd need a second user login, which should auto-login with the key personalisation active. This is based on my Pre-FaceLift model, the newer cars may have different behaviours.

Octavia Mk4 1.5TSI 150 tyre pressures again
Thanks for a useful reference point for the CrossClimates and pressures. For comparison, over July & August I’ve covered 3000 miles, mostly UK motorway limits, averaging 60.5mpg on Goodyear Efficient Grip Performace tyres at the ‘standard’ pressures. Again, 1.5TSI Estate; 2 adults and boot rammed.

Update of navigation maps
I've read elsewhere that you can update the maps using the Map Creator on this link https://updateportal.skoda-auto.com Not tried it myself so can't confirm.

Rear lights
@avi4tor there was me thinking the appeal of a Triumph Stag was the old school charm, walnut dashboard, and 1970s unreliability all cloaked in drop dead gorgeous looks 😂😂

Rear lights
It’s the same on mine; the extra bits are just dummy lenses, and AIUI, not even lamp holder at add extra bulbs🙄

Others are correct, the accelerator pedal is the best bet. As for a limiter in the car, it likely depends on the model you have. An SE-L, for example has adaptive cruise control and speed limiter, lowest effective speed is 20mph. SE spec, and SE Technology differ. I drive an SE First Edition for a while some four years ago; it had standard cruise control but don’t remember a speed limiter. Check the manual for your car and have a look at the control fitted. If it’s there it’ll either on the end of the indicator stalk or an additional stalk on the left side of the steering wheel.
