Just be wary if you do that that it won't then cause the two blades to collide near the bottom of the screen when operating - I seem to recall the clearance between them isn't huge and moving the drivers side one by that much may mean it catches the passenger side one on the way up and down the screen.

That's the method I've used before on a couple of cars and worked both times.. Loosen the nut, lift the arm off the screen as if changing the blade then rock it.

We moved into our current house in 2014 (built in 1958) and one of the main criteria was a garage that could take my MX5. I did want a double garage but no joy so settled for the single. The MX5 fits pretty easily but it's smaller than most cars these days... and the previous owners only ever used it as storage. It was the same at the old house (built in 1926) which also had a garage built at a later date. And both garages have needed work due to being unused (roof in the old house and crack stitching and new floor in the current one). In terms of cost of a garage - it might be worth considering a pre-cast concrete garage as I recall they are considerably cheaper (anything from about £5k upwards) and some are 'clad' to look like brickwork... I investigated them a bit when we were house hunting and finding houses without garages and most are pretty good these days (I'd certainly be happy to have one).

I hit a tree stump with mine about 20 years ago and stopped it dead. The result was a bent crank. Whacking it with a hammer straightened it a bit but its still going strong despite the vibrations... I've just got some foam pipe lagging on the handles to save my hands a bit.

For info only Skoda UK recommend a belt change on the 1.4 tsi... Skoda other countries don't, they only suggest belt inspections. And neither do the other parts of the VAG empire that use the same engine. Also, when the engine was launched there was a lot of press 'noise' and launch pack info about the long life belt and ovalised cam pulleys to reduce strain on the belt. Personally I won't be changing my belt for a long time yet but that's an individual choice based on research and personal experience over many cars run for high mileages and many years.

Just on the subject of street light / lamppost charging... many street lights are now 'low voltage' and only have 24v or 48v supplies via lower rated cables, rather than the old school 415v three phase ones. I have no idea but I'd be interested to know if 24v / 48v at a low power rating is sufficient to tap into to charge an EV?

That's exactly as it should be and how it's supposed to work on old cars!!! As @J.R. suggests - hold the key in the start position until it fires then let go so it can spring back to 'on' and your no longer feeding power to the starter.

That's extortionate! In the past I've had garages replace what is actually a 50p bulb for free. She's been taken for a ride there and I'd be complaining like hell over that - especially if the work wasn't agreed in advance.

(for info Nokia was sold to Microsoft but when Microsoft sold their mobile business the Finish HMD Global bought it back as Nokia) Blackberry also still exist but not as a handset manufacturer - they now sell IT security solutions... so another bad comparison there too.

The spotting scope works OK for some stuff and is good for the moon but is difficult to line up well even before zooming in and on the one I have the mount between tripod and scope isn't stable enough. I can probably fix the latter with some fettling to tighten it up but the alignment issue would then remain., so I'm thinking something purpose made would be much better.

Interested here too as my eldest is just finishing her first year of physics with astrophysics at Lancaster Uni... And my spotting scope doesn't cut the mustard

I remember using it on a 1982 1.3 Vauxhall Chevette in the late 80's and, at the time, was convinced it helped... Pretty certain I woudn't use it on a modern engine though!
