Current Budget / Midrange Tyres of Choice

Featured Replies

Whats the current tyre of choice? need a new pair of fronts.

Wanting to spend around £75 each hopefully less.

Seen Toyo T1R's (Think thats the right ones) for £75 which I didn't think was too bad.

Currently running Yokohama S306's all round.

Want a set with good wear rates as I do a lot of miles and not something thats going to slip and slide everywhere in the wet.

Also a good place to buy would be good (online or Suffolk/Cambs area) - currently looking at Event Mobile tyres.

Uniroyal rainsport 2:thumbup:

Hankook EVO V12's, better than the toyo in price and performance.

There are many threads about tyres, so do a search to save the kittens!

A lot of people will recommend Toyo T1-Rs and you can get them cheaper than £75 from the net. They are currently £57.20 each (£119.30 a pair inc p&p) from Camskill.co.uk. You then add £10ish per tyre for fitting & balancing at you local garage.

If you want cheaper tyres, the I think people recommend Kumho KU31 Ecsta Sport or even Falken 452 (I'm not sure if they make them anymore) or ZE912s, both are about £50 each. Have a look on this Camskill.co.uk - 205/45 R 16

I got some Toyos from them earlier this year and can't fault them or the tyres.

Ive got Kumho KU31 ecsta and i cant fault them at all, one of the best tyres ive used!

Either the Hankook Evo V12 or the Kumho Ecsta Sport KU31, I've also run some Kumho KU16

Another vote for the Toyos here!

My front pair showed up at work today, £114 for shipped pair over on camskill! BARGAIN! :D

Have a look at these tests, they have got the toyo T1R's and the Hankook EVO V12's, one of them also has the Kumho KU31's.

As they are in German just scroll to the last page and look at the results:

if you work it out with the cost versus how much mileage you will get out of them, and the increase in grip aswell, you cant beat Michelin IMO

the tyres on my car were not new when i bought it, ive done 12 months driving nearly on them and ive just had a service and all my tyres still have 5-6mm tread

i have been through cheap sets of tyres inside 12 months before, some Nankang NS-1's

they are approx £95 a corner in a Pilot Exalto II

as I've stated in other threads "You'll struggle to get a better tyre than the Uniroyal Rain Masters, especially in the wet "

I am about to fit my second full set of Falken 912's

Did 30k on the last set and the have been rather good in all departments, so good, I am getting them again! You should be able to get these for about £65 fitted or £50 from Camskill. They are even good in the cold which a lot of "performance" tyres seem to suffer in.

Oh dear, The Toyo's didn't come of to well, did they? Unless 16 point means the best at everything... Naa, didn;t think so, it's 16th place.

i wish people would stop raving about the Toyo tbh, they are a decent tyre, and for a good price for what you get, but they are NOT up their with the likes of Michelin, you get what you pay for

But in the tyre review the Michelin Pilot Sport is beaten by both Hankook and Bridgestone, which are considerably cheaper. I have a set of Mich's on the wife's Fabia and they are not brilliant. Will be replacing with Kumho KU31's when the time comes. Michelin used to be the best, but they are now losing out to the competition.

All the Micchies (Pilots, Sports and a few others) I have used have been awful. Tyres are subjective and you dont always get what you pay for.

Continental SportContact 2's sucked balls and I'd consider continental to be more "luxury" tyres than Toyo. Toyos were much grippier, quieter and more comfortable.

Barum Bravuris £43 +VAT. had them on for a while and a great budget tyre

I'm pretty certain that Barum are Michelins in-house budget brand and that, at one stage, Barum tyres were outperforming the Michelin ones! (the latter comes from someone who works from Michelin)

well i wont be changing my mind lol, my Clio on Michelins could out handle 99% of cars on the road

I think that's something to do with it being a Clio ;)

Yeah, 912 no.s 7, 8, 9 and 10 will be going on shortly. I reckon they're better than the Primacies, Proxeses and P-Zero Neros that I've had on previously, for the respective reasons: Still grip well below 3 or 4mm of tread; aren't as 'stodgy' and don't wear anything like as badly on the shoulders, and; didn't take over 1000 miles for the last traces of mould release compound to disappear...

Another kitty gone, but HTH nonetheless...

very true lol, i dont think many weaknesses in handling are down to the tyres on the Fabia, more the actual car/chassis itself

You can tell from the behaviour and wear of the tyres that the vrs's biggest problem aside from having an ancient form of rear suspension is the 2.5megatonne diesel engine. I've learnt to drive 'around' it but it's still a bugger!

The 328i is quite substantially heavier but feels much more balanced handling wise :D

I totally agree Brun, I had michelin pilot exaltos on my clio 182 and the speed you could go through corners was incredible:D

These are the same tyres we have on the wife's Fabia. They currently have about 4mm tread and I find the grip on damp roads to be less than 'incredible', although to be fair they are a good tyre in other respects. My son's Ibiza is running on newish Kumho KU31's and they are great. Will be putting those on the Fabia when the time comes.

The problem with tyre opinions/reviews is that the results are so variable. E.g. in the German road test linked above the Vredestein Sessanta's come out 10th (behind the Mich's at 6th), whereas in a recent Which? test they come out 3rd, in front of everything apart from Goodyear and Conti, and way ahead of Mich and Pirelli.
