The STS is firmware updateable and so with the newest version of software, it's automatically updated to work with newer cars.

New maps can be sent to you via email, so once you have the STS it stays with you

Would you be able to expand on this? Are you saying that if VAG decide to abandon Bosch and go with Maranelli for >50% of their fleet, you would be able to update the firmware to follow suite and offer new maps?

Will the older ECU/protocols still be supported and will the older maps for the older vehicles still be transferable (between ECU and STS).

That won't happen but VAG already use Marelli for some cars (not many) and Siemens, as well as Bosch. But yes the STS firmware would keep up to date once the protocols for reading and writing had been mastered.

Old protocols will stay intact and so it will also be backwards compatible.
