Sorry Stathap' date=' and now I've just noticed I'm the 100th poster on here! Think I deserve that acclaimation after all the hard work I've done over the last 24 hrs of trying to keep the peace and balance.

Had my unofficial mods head on today/yesterday :D

Did I succeed though? Tomorrow will tell. Can I hear the tinkling of locks and chains I ask?[/quote']

C.J for Mod ;) ?

(I'll keep posting C.J ;))

I thought I'd have a blast on this thread as I'm now an ex octavia vrs owner but still think it was the best car I ever owned.

What we need to remember is that £19' date='999 is just the starting point I've just specced one up to be equivalent to my current car and it totals £24,730. My current car is a bmw 320 sport which after a bit of haggling I bought for £24k (new) from a main dealer. Now I know the new golf may be good but it is not in the small excutive sector of the market and given the choice of the two cars I know which one I'd rather have. To put it bluntly in my opinion the new gti is just a bit to big for it's boots and over priced by 3k. I intend keeping the bmw for 12 -18months and then hopefully a new more practical sports hatch will be out that will have 5 doors as standard (not a £500 extra) and a more sensible price of £16.5 to £17k if not I'll stick with what I've got and the few briskoda members that I've seen since going to the dark side will vouch for how nice my car looks (and yes the indicators do work) :)[/quote']

Father in law wanted to buy a new 3 series (2.0 SE) but was put off by the mediocre interior quality. My Fabia was better in many regards - eg nice padded leather handbrake grip. I would certainly prefer the golf to your car, where I live Beemers are very common and often (stereoptype here) driven quite forcefully. 24k is a hell of a lot for what your car is. GTI is a bargain in comparison.

"However,if the person concerned is so incensed by the fact that plenty on this site fail to see the wondeful value (sik) of a Golf GTI then as stated before the person doesnt have to keep logging in...if I dont like a TV program there is always the off button.

This is after all a Skoda owners forum, so why should the person expect everyone to diss their own Skodas whatever the badge on them?

The only person looking silly is he."

I am glad this site is run by moderators otherwise a certain dominant group of contributors would throw off anyone who did not share their opinion. Why does admiring another car imply disloyalty to Skoda?

It doesnt and no-one said it does.

The point is that no-matter how good the Golf GTI is, just like the previous Golf GTI, the next Octy will be very similar but will also be a few £k cheaper which means the Octy to be a better bet for those that are value conscious or are going to spend the price difference on modding it up.

Don't know much about the original Mk1 Golf GTi as it came out in the year I was born but wasn't it supposed to be a sports car that was affordable to the masses?

I know car prices have risen over the past 30 years but £20,000 is still a lot to pay for a car on the average salary. The most expensive car I've ever bought was a brand new Octy Tdi 110 Elegance at £14,100 in 2001. Great car and I was very upset when I had to sell it due to losing my job and not being able to keep up the repayments. I'll never buy a brand new car again because of the massive initial depreciation.

The best car I've ever bought was the current Octy vRS at £11,000. 21 months old with 8300 miles on the clock. :D

I do like the new Golf GTi and will be very interested when the new vRS rolls out - hopefully with the same engine and suspension setup. I just wouldn't pay £20,000 for it.

Mornin' everyone, glad to see no spilt blood in here today so far.

D'ya know, I've just discovered ...'cus it was mentioned in on this thread somewhere..page 183 I think... that my Furby hasn't got 'damped' grab handles!!!

Quite frankly I'm disgusted, and if I find out that the SO superior Polo has, Skoda UK better watch out, C.J. will not be best pleased.

S'pose they'll come back to me though and say it's little useless items like that, that help keep the price down. Humph

This thread still going??

May I suggest the person concerned who raves over better quality plasyics and dampened grab handles to have a close look at a Superb as well as a Passat and then tell me that the Passat is better put together' date=' has more classy touches and better quality plastics because judging from the reactions I have had from VW dealer staff to mine they all agree the Superb is better specced, put together and for a much better price.

[/quote']

Ahhh, Good Morning Intelligence!

My I suggest the person concerned above compare the prices of the Passat and Superb. I agree, the base models represent good value for money. But when you get into the 1.9 TDI models like you yourself have done, the Superb actually works out more when compared to the equivalent Passat Highline. The Superb is the better car though by far, but it has the benefit of having design touches that don't all hark back to 1996, its a 'fresher' car basically. I'm not here to defend every car in the Volkswagen range, if you think that your sadly mistaken.

Do you ever leave your VW dealer by the way? Do they have to chuck you out at the end of the day because you won't leave and constantly remind them what value for money you got from your lovely Skoda? :D

Also, can I remind you. Like the Passat Highline. The VRS had massive price reductions (and I assume some extra equipment) to stir up interest and sales before a new model arrived. The VRS used to retail at £15,550, which in 2001-2002 probably did represent good value, and was only about £1600 more than a MK4 GTi at the time. Does it represent good value now? No, because the competition has blitzed it so far behind. I can guarantee you the new VRS will be sitting around the £17000-£18000 mark.

I might also suggest he check the OTR price for a Golf GTI to be £19995 as stated by the VW web site...FACT.

Yes, this is what we've been discussing for the last 8 pages, keep up!

NW, alright mate?

Your comment about the TDI Sport v Fabia was an interesting one to me, because my dad has a TDI Sport Polo and I have an RS Fabia, and the cars were virtually the same price (in fact I think the TDI Sport was a grand more but anyway...). Damped grab handles apart and a few other silly touches like that, I fail to see where the extra quality is on the Polo over the Fabia. My dad certainly agrees that the Fabia's cockpit is every bit just as nice a place as the Polo, and the seats are certainly nicer in mine. I cant really see any evidence of this higher quality - even the gearknob, handbrake and steering wheel are done in leather on the Skoda and not in the VW.

All IMHO of course... oh and I really like the look of the new GTI - and some are comparing it with the likes of the CTR but its not really the same car for the same people - the VW is bound to be far more luxuriously specified and more comfortable. For those that want to eat up motorway miles and occaisionally take it on a backroad blast then the GTI is for them - the CTR is unashamedly B-road and track focused, and can not boast anywhere near the standard spec of the GTI, hence the difference in price. Overpriced? Oh yes! But which car isnt these days.... oh, that'll be the Skoda then ;)

On the original post, all makes or car at some time have recalls...no biggy IMHO...as long as it's sorted out quickly, and with little inconvenience to the owners.

On the off-topic topic......Can we not just say that I like the car I own, and you like the car you wish you had...which is better or worse is irrelevant. Do I like the look of the new GTi?...Yes...Could I afford one?...Yes...would I pay 20K for one?...No. Thats is however just my opinion. It's not right or wrong...just an opinion.

In terms of handling, again it's all relative. I don't know if the new GTi handles any better or worse than the Octy, but I do know that the Octy handles well enough for me, and goes round corners better than any car I've ever had...and I've had my fair share. Could it be improved?......what car couldn't?

If you are happy with the car you own (or lust after), then why worry about other peoples opinions......listen to them...and either take them onboard, or completely disregard them. At the end of the day, I couldn't care less if people thought the car I drive was the worst form of transport since the sinclair C5...I love it, and intend to enjoy it for many years to come......

One last thing...to say that a car MUST be VFM just because it's selling well is complete rubbish. Companies have been overpricing products for years, and we still go out and buy them...that's just the way it is.

Cheers

Ventmore

The boot is on the other foot now. Skoda drivers have had to endure far worse then "your car is overpriced" over the years, not that that's ever been an issue. Sorry if this offends your sensibilities as VW owners or any other for that matter. What really makes me laugh is the plastic (two faced) Skoda driver, as I call them. Haven't got the nuts to back up there decision to buy a Skoda but hind behind 'I had a better car once' or still have. Get over yourselves!!

I'm sorry that GTi is overpriced, I really am but buyers have only themselves to blame. Car manufacturers have been having a laughing at your expence for years but you still keep buying the badge so they keep putting the price up. Stop buying them and see what happens, that will wipe the smile off their faces. Don't even get me started on smug dealers like VW, BMW etc they are just not worthy of my time.

Sorry for the delusional, hysterical rantings of an vRS driver. :D

Yes but it's still 20K for a Seat!!!! :D Aww come on it does look like an Ibiza on steroids

This thread is full of people insulting those who have other points of view. If you do not like the debate perhaps it is you who ought to chose to leave?

The rest of us can enjoy the banter with our teddies still in the pram.

PS It ought to be THEIR decision not THERE decision. Perhaps the spelling is associated with the delusions.

Happy New Year.

Oh sorry didn't realize it was a school teachers forum.

When your Srilankan is as good as my English I'll bow to your superiority.

An interesting debate...and one that is quite well argued without resulting to name calling etc....see if that'll happen on other forums. ;)

Just a little reminder to keep on "keeping it a clean fight". ;)

Barrie502, most of the insults in this thread have come from yourself and Nelson. And before you pick on other people's spelling you ought perhaps to check on or two of your own posts.

We also have a useful facility whereby you can reply to a post by clicking on "REPLY" in the bottom left hand corner - this then highlights the text as a Quote, making it much easier for everyone to see when you are quoting someone else and would make your posts simpler to read.

PS. It ought to be "choose" to leave, not "chose"

A fine post from yet another delusional Octy RS owner

:agree:

Picking on people's spelling in a debate, along with calling people delusional, etc. is rather pathetic, and a waste of everyone's time.

Could you please point these 'insults' out for me? If you going to make reference to them at least actually specify or quote what exactly you mean.

Actually, I think aside from a few people on here. The attitude of people on here has generally pretty stunk and therein lies the problem. Instead of entering into a debate, instead of picking up a point which someone has made you just throw a list of 'facts' and attitude at us.

Whos being the badge snobs now? :D

Whos being the badge snobs now? :D

We are..

And you know where the door is :)

Instead of entering into a debate, instead of picking up a point which someone has made you just throw a list of 'facts' and attitude at us.

But there is a fine line between facts and opinions - that VW dealers seem to think the Skoda offerings better than VW is fact, though it's a fact about their opinions. :D

So far the debate seems to suggest that, as general facts, the VW offerings are more expensive than the Skoda offerings, yet are still beset by the same problems (as a result of component sharing), but that they have some better interior plastics and design touches, even if the "features" list is stingier. And, in the case of the Golf vs. Octy, you get a smaller car too.

This would seem to suggest that the Skoda *is* the logical option, and is better value for money.

Swap the badges round, I'm sure most people on here would still drive the same car... :D

Rob.
