EVO Test of Monte Carlo

Seems to be a fair bit of Monte bashing going on here. If the running costs, insurance or performance of the vRS aren't for you then the Monte presents a nifty alternative to the vRS, with a fizzy, punchy engine in tsi guise, or an economical torquey engine in derv guise. And it has a better interior than the vRS.

+1

It's also amazing that quite a few of the VRS lot are "modding" their VRS's with the "Monte" black grills, lights, etc.......isn't immitation the sincerest form of flattery?????

Also a few of the posts have been going on about how good small engines are and, small engines being able to do 30-80mph in 3rd gear etc........I can agree with that as my Fabia is great for being able to do up to 70ish in 3rd without hitting the red line (at 6200rpm)....so perfect for having fun down the back roads......and DRIVING a car!!!! B)

I like the Monte and I've suggested to my brother to get one next year once his insurance comes down a bit. The vRS is out of reach for young people wanting a reasonably quick and fun hatch that still cheap to run and insure. The 1.2 TSI imo ticks those boxes. By the time he gets it he will have been driving 2 years in his Felicia so it will be a nice upgrade. I'd have loved one for my second car

Those that dislike the monte, just close your eyes when I drive past in my black/red beast! :)

Oh and also, when the VRS is doing top speed my monte will keep up easily... since you can only do 70mph ;)

I must admit the only thing I don't quite get about the monte is the large piano black bits as to me its a bit to trying to hard externaly.

I can see why some will want a monte and some the VRS, however they are both Fabias both skoda's so why all the hateing?

The one thing I maybe would have liked to have seen instead of what they have done is limiting the engine choices for the monte to the 105hp options just to truly mark it out as a proper special edition. But thats just my opinion

I think the monty should of only been made with the 1.9tdi or the 1.2tsi engine.

Everything else is just too slow to deserve such style.

But thats just my opinion ;)

I don't understand the competetion from people between the monte and the vRS... why even compair? if you were arguing about your clio 200 and the vRS then fine.... compair the monte to things like the corsa with the VXR kit.... (the lookalike..) I'd rather have the monte anyday...

Good lad :D!

Saw a yellow monte today, actually looked quite nice... bit in your face though!

I went for the Monte Carlo as it looks smart and comes with a lot of the kit I would have had to select as an optional extra on a std Fab or Polo.

I plan on 'personalising' a few things with regards to looks and chassis, tho I'm under no disillusion of it being a 'proper' hot hatch. But then I didn't opt for one of these in the first place on cost grounds.

For a new car, I thought the Monte Carlo did looks, drive, equipment and practicality better than anything else in the same price bracket. That's why I bought one, not because I wanted a hot hatch

Smithy

Agrees with this quote, thinks the VRS owners maybe a little tad jealous of the Monte's looks. I have a little family and the Monte suits me perfectly, looks posh yet it not a bmw, audi (my dream) even VW

and for it price within recession is a excellent value, I have the Tdi 105, would have gone for Tsi just more little more power but I'm happy with Tdi because of it Mpg and just recently just loving the

humming Tdi sound :) Maybe add decals add on the side of the car and few bits and bobs to make the car a little different from the popular red montes!

I see points made about Jealously.... i think i got truly put off by the Monte when i had a bit of a tussle with one.

i saw a young lad driving what i thought was a black packed vRS a few cars behind me and i noticed he was overtaking everyone... when he finally got behind me i got a bit excited and pointed out to my partner that we had a vRS behind us and i was looking forward to seeing what it had.

so the first time he tried to pass me i floored it.. he didn't complete the overtake and instead chased me down the relatively quiet B-road, as expected he kept up and the car looked very tidy in the corners!

then we got to the big long straight where a car with even a small bhp advantage would be able to pass the slower car yet when he tried to overtake and i gave it full gas.

all i can say is it took a damn long time for him to get passed me... (i was thinking why doesn't he just floor it and pass me!?!?) when he finally got infront i noticed the hideous Monte badge and my dream was shattered :-( i dunno wheather it was a diesel or a petrol but it certainly was no faster than my old Felly....

it kinda made me think whats the point in all this aggressive looking bodykitting if the car can barely pass a 75bhp 11yr old car.

also i felt embarassed when my partner was like.. 'those vRS's aren't very good are they' i had to explain i made a mistake and it was a lesser car

I'm not jealous of Monte's but I do think they are a steal at the price they are as you get so much for your money. I did look at them before the vRS but I really wanted a more powerful car before I have any bigger life commitments

I did however also suggest my brother to get a diesel Monte as it gives all the look with a great engine. The combination of body kit, wheels and touches work so well together

Nice driving... making it difficult and potentially dangerous for the driver of the car overtaking you... Not something I'd be boasting about on a public forum

Sounds like you drive like an idiot. I'm amazed you didn't get the third degree off the missus for acting like that.

Generally if a car is trying to overtake on a b road, the safest option is to slow and allow him to pass as quickly as possible.

then we got to the big long straight

In referance to your overtaking....I think the above posters didn't quite read this bit....BIG..LONG...STRAIGHT.........this would have lots of visiability.

Most of the time I tend not to "race" or stop people overtaking me defo if they have been "up my arse" for a wee while...the only time that I "race" is when I enter a 60 or 70 zone from a 30 or 40...then I really put my foot down.....some people who thing that I just drive a "carpy Skoda"...get a suprise......this mainly happens on main "A" roads tho'

I see that you have a 75bhp Felica.......much lighter than a Fabia....so a much better power to weight ratio...A Fabia would need at least 100bhp to cleanly beat your power to weight I reckon! B)

eh.... is this debate still going?

Yeah i was aware that post was gonna make me sound like an idiot. but he was a keen young driver who i put my foot down against for fun rather than any intent of dangerous driving... and if it was the vRS i thought it was i would have expected him to pass me quickly on a 500metre downhill straight regardless of what i tried to do. FYI we gave each other a wave and a flash at the end of it showing no ill intentions.

and when i floored it the first time i didn't actually do it when he was on the other side of the road... simply when he was building speeding behind me with the intent of passing..

i know first hand how dangerous it can be if the driver infront of you decides to give it some gas when you are mid-overtake especially when they easily out-gun you.

it's why i never bother overtaking scooby's in anything but the porsche because if they decide it give it gas when i'm on the wrong side of the road then i get put in a dangerous situation.

please excuse any unintended arrogance of my previous post

I know what you mean. Slightly OT but a few years ago I'd gone for a spin in my Polo along the road that passes Penderyn coming from Brecon where me and a Corsa I'd met along the way drove briskly along the whole route. For those who don't know the road it's epic as it's nice and open, you can see for miles. At the end by the roundabout I pulled alongside and it was a man in his late 20's with his missus. Both of us smiled and nodded acknowledging how good it was and we both went in our separate directions

What you did the first time is still dangerous driving, Sonner, you knew that he was going to overtake and deliberately decided to boot it... If I'd have been him I'd have been well chuffed... Not! You may think its funny, but plenty of people have had accidents because of moves like yours, ok if he knew you were going to do it, but he didn't, your driving was both stupid and dangerous.

Monte Carlo has its own niche and offers plenty different from the vRS.

I chose it because it has a few nice extras that appealed and looks slightly different to the standard range of Fabias which I already drive.

I didn't want DSG, wasn't interested in the extra power, higher fuel consumption and increased insurance.

If I see you on the road I will be sure to bow to your mighty lead foot.

I test drove a VRS today and I liked it, but... and here's the but.. I need a car for my wife and kids. She does not drive particularly fast, and to be honest (I know this might sound odd) the VRS seemed a bit too fast.

95% of the time the power will simply not be needed. So you'll be paying extra tax and insurance and upfront cost for 5% of motoring.

So I am thinking of the 105bhp Monte. Looks nicer than the VRS imo (nicer black alloys without the annoying silver ring).

Bit of a dilemma really as I like both, but I think the Monte might tip it. Just an example of how there is a different car for everyone..

Can't understand why they only got 41mpg... I get that from my VRS on my 19 mile commute of dual carriageway and B class roads?

Must be the only one that doesn't see what everyones moaning at you for? If the boys driving like he's got a VRS and he doesn't, it's his own fault and stupidity for irritating the other drivers. I had a mini overtake me when I was cruising slightly above the 60 mph speed limit, being a VRS driver, I knew instantly I could teach him a lesson but chose not to, it wasn't until I was filling up my car next to him at the nearest petrol station and left slightly in front of him (he had to queue when i paid at pump) that I decided i'd have a little fun. Came off of the first round about and sat at 60mph bang on with the cruise on, and watched as he came chasing after me. The next roundabout then leads onto a dual carriageway and as we came on he pulled out and got along side me, at which point i clicked the down shift paddle and nailed it, left him in the dust and laughed to myself. obviously scared him off because when i sat at 60mph after the dual carriageway he never once even looked to over take me again. Lesson learned I think. To be fair, my situation was similar, but i had a dual carriageway, so there wasn't any danger! No one else on the road either!

Wait for the barrage of abuse!

lol... I'm not as serious as some... I had an evo driver do this to me (in the vRS) and I wasn't upset, I just thought it was nice to see where I was in comparison to an evo X, I expected him to floor it on the dual carrigeway, (safe, no a-road overtake!) I moved out , but failed, I gave him a wave when we parted company, he waved back... Its all good fun, if you wern't interested in what your car can do when in a safe situation with another "fast" car, why buy it? he was happy his evo won, I was happy I almost kept up

Try looking at from a different angle... I have never owned fast road cars, however i do like to make progress, so I will overtake people to do so. With a lowered powered car you have to plan ahead and the last thing you need is some idiot (and I'm sorry, but that what they are) to speed up deliberately when you attempt to get by them... I used to tow a race car around and had some twit do just that when i started to overtake him... Probably just to teach me a lesson that people towing shouldn't overtake... I don't know the reason... But I was well chuffed with his actions... not...

On a motorway or dual carriageway, although its annoying for the overtaker, its liveable with, though I'd still call the other druiver a few choice names, but on a single carriageway, its just not acceptable... Perhaps some people need reminding of the basics of driving and the Highway Code:

144. Being overtaken. If a driver is trying to overtake you, maintain a steady course and speed, slowing down if necessary to let the vehicle pass. Never obstruct drivers who wish to pass. Speeding up or driving unpredictably while someone is overtaking you is dangerous. Drop back to maintain a two-second gap if someone overtakes and pulls into the gap in front of you.

Some of you will just call me a killjoy, but until its been done to you and put you in a dangerous position you just don't realise how stupid this sort of maneuver is... If you want to race there are plenty of racetracks, try using them instead of some innocent motorist.

for my part I am talking about a dual carridgeway only, and then under certain circumstances (i.e someone I know is wanting a play) I know the highway code well and don't need to be reminded (I am a driving instructor) and a professional driver.. you are of course right, in the circumstances YOU describe, it is dangerous. But still, I would not get angry if someone did this to me, whats the point?, if you cannot safely complete an overtake, don't go for it. and please, relax a bit . everything is not always as it seems, you are allowed to have fun you know, too ;) (and don't take this as personal, but your comments feel like that to me, but I am never doing what you descibe.. EVER.) most of the time I drive, I drive for fun

I however find (in the circumstances you describe) when I am overtaking (in the more powerful car) people will not follow the guidance anyway, and 90% of people are seriously upset if you overtake them (and again, I am talking BY THE BOOK, i.e. not speeding, clear road, a chnace to make progress ect, ) and they will start flashing headlights giving hand signals tailgateing after ect... people just dont like to be overtaken (thats why I said relax when you started on the "chioce names")..... I have also had abuse with my signage on! people don't even reaslise a dual carrigeway is 70 mph most of the time! If I have my signage on, I simply wont overtake, because even driving absolutely perfectly, people will get angry and abusive. :dull:
