One of the best Fabia's on this forum.... Easily!

You're attention to detail is sick :p

Thanks mate B)

Sam - I know I forget how lucky I am sometimes! I've only seen/heard of one other.

Matt - i got it from the scrapping car.

Nice progress as always dude!

Never seen this thread before, I just read through all of it and is must say its very impressive and so clean. Makes me want to do so much other things to mine now.

Do you still live in newport then? As I have never seen the fab about and work in newport myself.

Great updates the little things count, love your new steering wheel looks lovely and good quality too, keep up the good work.

wheel looks very at home :)

Yeh mate, still live in Newport, it's the very very outskirts though, more Magor than Newport. I spend most of my time in Bristol, I'll only really go into Newport to the retail parks in spytty.

Ah i see. I work in lee way next to spytty. Have to have a meet up when my fab is back on the road so i can check yours out in the flesh.

For sure man, just give me a shout! I have a mate local who owns a Red one also.

Did some work on my sub box today.

Measured up to trim down excess

Trimmed

Cut down some 12mm MDF for the front, did a trial fit, lovely a snug under my shelf!

da4059b1.jpg

I applied a 3rd coat of fibre glass all round, then Cut an MDF top down to size and fitted

There's an obvious discrepancy between the MDF top and fibre glass, but the when I merge the FG to the MDF with 2 layers in and out it will eliminate these

Sub hole cut out (yes, my first wonky counter sunk holes were drilled in the wrong place!)

My plans were to have the sub sitting flush with the front, but unfortunately I just haven't got space!! Even with the hole for the sub as far along as possible, there isn't enough room to clear the arch, here's how it sits unflushed

To get it flush would involve making the sub box larger by re-shaping the sides. I'm gonna leave it as it is, as I don't want it protruding into the boot any more.

I cut a cardboard stencil to take the shape of the final side, and fibre glassed it

Not much left to do now. I've just ordered some more fibreglass to bond the MDF to the existing fibre glass, then felt it and fit terminals and sub!

Good work there mate. That will look great when it's done :-)

Thanks mate, fingers crossed I'll have the last layers off fibre glass on Thursday!

Sweet. You've done a really good job of your car so far. I'm really impressed. The new steering wheel looks class.

I'm looking at getting an R32 style one. I'm in touch with a German Ebay seller that can customise them too. Would like it to match my seats :-)

Thanks man.

Yeh I know the company, I've had a ganders myself. Couldn't justify the price tag though, despite it being a really good deal!

Yeah is quite a whack, but is cheaper than a new one from VW and I even saw an old worn one go for £180!

makes £200 for a new custom one look good :-)

Been a little busy with work, but did some more work on the box, nearly there now.

First layer of the missing side done (I have since added two more coats and masked over the lip picture here)

top smoothed over

Hole drilled for wire connectors

I loosely measured the internal volume, 25 litres. Just a little over manufacturers recommendation; perfect!

All sanded down and ready for carpet.

looking good ;-) do u still have your original steering wheel m8? if so fancy selling it? :-P

small update:

I'm now sporting a 9N3 polo rear wiper

1e2f66d2.jpg

The more I looked at the wiper blank, the more it just looked naff. This has more on an OEM appeal. Plus with the amount of motorway miles I do, no wiper was becoming a bit of an annoyance.

I also sound proofed the tailgate before re-fitting:

I remembered to weigh the last few bits before they went in, and worked out how much extra weight I've added with all the sound proofing. It comes in at a pretty scary 13.3kg!! I'm very keen to remove the back box now, to compensate for the weight gain.

Anyone know the weight of the standard back box on the vRS?

Anyone know the weight of the standard back box on the vRS?

Heavy, id say 20kg...

  • Author

Good, it will compensate for both sound proofing and sub box then.

How much did the Polo rear wipe cost you and how long to fit?Looks a nice tidy finish to the back end of the car

  • Author

Took two minutes?

My wiper was already off though, so may take a little longer getting the centre bolt off (it can be a right nightmare), there is a special tool designed for it if you're having problems.

It cost about £32 all in from VW, that was for the arm, blade and cap. You have to sand the cap down to fit. but other than that it's a straight fit.

If you want it for cheaper, get on the Polo forums and ask about, they'll be plenty of people who have de-wipered and have one lying around. I bought it new because I wanted new plastic, and they had it all on the shelf.

Here's a fitting guide:

Tim buy my smooth bumper! lol

  • Author

Tempting dude, but I've been down that road before with my polo. I was scared to drive it anywhere without a full frontal bra (which was ugly as hell!).

I do far too many miles to be faffing around with smoothing, gotta keep this build simple!

Changed the fuel filter, air filter and MAF sensor today. Should be breathing easier now.

7d329034.jpg

Air filter was a right state!!!

deed5404.jpg

I'll report back on how the new MAF affects my MPG.

Fuel filter was smaller than the previous one with drain, so I cut a tin can in half to act as a spacer so it sits nice.

I think I'm going to look into an oil catch can and EGR disable also. The amount of sticky filth in the air intake was horrible. Has to be OEM looking and keep the anti-shudder though.
