vRS timing chain snapped at less than 70k miles

Featured Replies

They are having a laugh at 6K! You dont even need a new engine. The most it will need is a new timing chain kit, however many valves are bent, head gasket and an oil and coolant change.

VAG have form for this: http://www.timingbel...t.com/faqvw.htm In the USA it was claimed: In the Class Action filed in 2007, Plaintiff alleges that VW knowingly concealed, suppressed and omitted to

  • No, as long as the garage is VAT registered garage and they use OEM parts. Kwik Fit? Seriously? I wouldn't take my bicycle there.

  • The tfsi has a cambelt & a chain linking the camshafts together.

I dont get way they dont make engines that freewheel when the belt/chain snaps, then all it needs is timing back up, not a new top end

The law is the law. Its there to protect the consumer whether loyal or not.

Yawn. Are you having a bad day?

Yawn. Are you having a bad day?

Nope - Just stating the facts.

They like you to think loyalty is valuable. Reality is, it isn't, the SOGA is. They just gloss over that fact 'as a gesture of goodwill'.

totally agree, we are holding back on a decision on the clutch wether we go to court or not under the SOGA i think 13 months is sufficient time for them to fix the problem and the fact they have acknowledged the fault by "trying" to repair the gearbox admits defeat to me , so yes SOGA is the way forward should you not get 100% contribution, i have instructed our lawyer to start proceedigns should we not get a successful outcome, i would strongly advise even talking to your lawyer and seeking advice

I'm sorry mate but i'm with him on this one, the "goodwill contribution" is like the old "you must have the car serviced at a dealer for the warranty to be effective" they are basically holding a gun to your head with this "get it serviced and we will help towards repairs of our crap cars" its an absolute joke, i wouldnt trust any dealer to do servicing.

If the claim amount is less than £5k (possibly increasing to £15k if it hasn't already) then you can just file a small claim for a small fee. £50 or less iirc.

As you say, loyalty and service history are just another Customer services ploy to extract more money out of you when you don't even have to have it serviced within the network.

You can't blame Skoda for encouraging you to have the car serviced within their dealer network. Agreed, legally they can't force you but they are a business out to make money.

Outside of their legal obligations if their incentive to get you in to their dealer network is to offer a greater chance of a 'goodwill gesture' for out-of-warranty work then that is their prerogative.

I've been to court over a car before and I can tell you it is far from simply handing over fifty quid and thinking you’re going to get a favourable outcome.

I thought I read once you can have your car serviced at any garage registered for VAT without invalidating your warranty?

You can as long as they use genuine parts.

The whole brand loyalty issue shouldn't even come into play here! Skoda should foot the bill 100%!

A new engine from a dealer will be about £6k. But they do crop up from time to time on eBay. Also look out for MK5 Golf GTi engines (or MK6 if yours is a TSi) as they are the same.

You will find them on eBay for around the £1000-1500 mark.

Bring it here ill fix it for under a grand ;-)

u r covered by SOGA for 5years. deal directly with supplying dealer only not skoda. Did you use finance?

Any updates?

(genuine question)

Why only the dealer? and also what has finance got to do with it? i know if it was financed technically they own the car.

The purchasing dealer is who your 'contract' is with from a SOGA point of view and if you have finance, they own part of the car so it is in their favour that their 'asset' gets fixed so therfore can usually apply pressure to the vendor to get things progressing.

ah, is your DMF issue still ongoing?!

yeh it is mate and Mark Fox got back to me today basically washing his hands of it i think in a vain hope we will go away... sadly we wont i think its in his best interests to replace it ... i'm quite fond of the car actually ... apart from this issue.

Thanks for the advice, apologys for hijacking a thread. :)

VW Finance have a dedicated dept to fast track repairs and lean on dealers. it does work.

Interesting, thanks for that mate :) CAB has told me to stop payment to VW Finance but i feel thats a bit quick as they arent aware of the problems...yet lol.

Cheers

Graham.

Dont stop payments without informing anyone, it will affect your ability to get credit and the mounting debt could be passed to a 3rd party debt collection agency.

Speak to the finance company and tell them what is currently happening, after all if its HP / PCP they still own the car until you complete the last payment.
