First long run in the VRS today - what's your MPG?

Featured Replies

Did my first decent trip in the VRS today up to Yorkshire which gave me a chance to properly asses fuel economy.

Managed 59 to the gallon on the way up there. (cruised behind a Focus CMAX to see what was the best average I could get).

On the way back it was more like 54 to the gallon.

Question: anybody seen increased MPG from a panel filter alone?

Personally, I'd just stick with changing the OE paper filter every 10k/year. Panel filters can damage turbos & MAFs and I, again personally speaking, feel that it just isn't necessary to fit one.

56ish average is quite good. Speed?

300 mile drive today and computer says 72 mpg

I have had 80mpg indicated by the on board computer

Good call, if the weather is good I'll whip the top off the air box tomorrow and have a look what state the current filter is in.

Reckon the CMAX I followed was averaging about 75.

Somehow the mongrel got 68mpg (computer readout) on the 200 mile drive back from Ultimate Dubs, and that was pulling 6th gear (long ratio) at between indicated 70 + 75.

Still not sure how it does this, especially as its got +80% fuelling nozzles.

Even tracking on my fuel to miles spreadsheet, its still 60mpg roughly.

68mpg is fantastic!

I have to say since buying the Fabia i'm so impressed with the effortless way it deals with motorway miles (this may be because it's my first diesel).

I'm thinking a new filter and some decent fuel wouldn't go a miss though.

Anybody use redex diesel injector with positive results?

Wouldn't bother with Redex. Good fuels (BP is my choice) have sufficient detergents in them. Just steer clear of supermarket fuels! :)

Ive had 83 mpg on the trip computer on an early morning trip into work with little traffic. This was sitting at about 50 mph for 19 miles. Does the trip not over-read by about 10% though? Not that i'm complaining! :giggle:

Best I've seen in the Golf is around 44mpg (same engine) on a long trip. Was up higher, but then I hit MK which took 5mpg off! Worked out it under reads, as it's doing about 50mpg a tank, yet claims a max of 45!

(600 mile range, 12gallon tank)

I only ever get around 50-55mpg? Mhmm think I need a good service!

Wtf??I get 30-35 round town and went Manc at wknd car and boot full and just crept to 40. Mines hybrid. Shud I still be getting more?round town don't go past 2k revs if can help it.

42-55mpg on an average 150mile mostly motorway run.

Depends how naughty I am feeling at the time.

These aren't realistic MPG figures though.

Driving like a pensioner in a 'sporty' Skoda is bad for our image guys.

Me too. But the actual figure calculated from brim to brim was 60mpg.

The only way to calculate accurate MPG is to do at least 2 full tanks using venting and top to the brim. I know in my car that the MDF2 is just under 2 MPG over optimistic :giggle: Now after tracking the MPG over a long period using pen and paper plus venting to the rim every time I feel very confident about my MPG results. Going for a 200/300 miles run and looking ONLY at the MDF2 (computer) would not give you a real day to day data.

On a 300mile round trip at 70mph with cruise on i got 56mpg

This was my best on a trip to Heathrow. 70mph all the way on cruise control.

Checked with brim to brim, and got 61.5 overall including bit of town driving after getting back - seems my trip computer is pretty accurate.

If there is something i have noticed i think my fuel consumption has gone down :/

Normally i could sit at 80mph going along the M4 and M25 and get atleast 50-50mpg. This is from Reading to Enfield. Once i had 60mpg however the past few months i find it hard to touch 50mpg.

Was thinking abut Redex as well but my mate who is a mechanic for Skoda told me not to. The car has full Service History so can't seem to find the reason why it's changed so much. I would have thought as the weather is warmer the mpg should rise slightly

I used some on one of the work vans (2005 ford transit MWB semi high top) but this was after cleaning the manifold and blanking the EGR valve off, we have noticed and increase in mpg, £20 always used to get about 80miles, always more towards 120miles from £20 now, could also be down to more economical driving.

The fuel computer on my SE is miles out. Approximately 12-15% optimistic.

I always brim my tank and check. Averaging around 48 MPG at the moment.

My trip to work is over the moors so it has come down from when I used the motorway to commute and toddled along at 60.

What you do with your right foot will influence the economy way more than any additives ever will.

That said, I do run Millers often, and tend to run on V power Diesel :D

I've started using Miller about 40 000 miles ago as well and have noticed much better engine performance and my overall MPG went up about 2.5/3 MPG. The car is running much smoother and quieter as well.

Clean inlet manifold, EGR delete, elephant breather mod, decat, 2.5" exhaust system = excellent cruising fuel economy. Got indicated 73.4mpg driving back from Weston Super Mud to Swindon along M4 @ constant 65 (GPS speed). Hybrid Turbo - not just more power!!!

I've started a third element to my spreadsheet, so will be tracking all fuel used from now on (3rd phase is "post exhaust manifold repair" :D) The longer I keep going, the better idea I will have of average increase in economy. At the moment I only have the Ultimate Dubs 500 miles on there.
