SMS text-to-speech using Factory Fitted Columbus Bluetooth System

Featured Replies

Hello,

I'm an Android developer interested in getting text-to-speech functionality working on my Octavia Scout stock Columbus Bluetooth System.

Essentially I have an Android phone which successfully pairs to the inbuilt bluetooth module. I can receive and make calls. I can stream music.

However, I am unable to get the text-to-speech engine on the phone to play through the blue-tooth "headset". My aim is to have SMS auto read-out over the car speakers via bluetooth. Even better to be able to use the cars microphone to dictate a reply.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Has this already been done? If so what app do you use?

Further to this I have trawled through various topics in Briskoda and google (for similar VW possiblities) to no avail. The best I can come up with is in the following article, which to mind mind is a completely new direction using the Bluetooth Message Access Profile (MAP).

Any thoughts on this as well?

Thanks in advance.

its called "RSAP".

if u have a 9WZ bluetooth unit, and a rsap capable mobile, you can have sms messages displayed on the columbus unit + mfd (maxidot) unit.

rsap will also utlise the bt's extenal antenna, saving the mobile's power & usage.

Thanks for replying JR RS,

Yes, I was aware of the rSAP protocol, however I'm not sure thats what I'm after. My understanding of rSAP is that it permits the reading of SIM contact lists and SMS messages as you have said. From WIKI:

SIM Access Profile (SAP, SIM, rSAP)

This allows devices such as car phones with built-in GSM transceivers to connect to a SIM card in a phone with Bluetooth, thus the car phone itself doesn't require a separate SIM card. This profile is also known as rSAP (remote-SIM-Access-Profile). More information on which phones are supported can be found here(German version only)

However, I'm really after trying to determine why I can't get the audio stream to work from my phone when all other audio streams seem to work. I'm starting to suspect it is the requirement of the MAP protocol. From WIKI:

Message Access Profile (MAP)

Message Access Profile (MAP)[4] specification allows exchange of messages between devices. Mostly used for automotive handsfree use. The MAP profile can also be used for other uses that require the exchange of messages between two devices. The automotive Hands-Free use case is where an on-board terminal device (typically an electronic device as a Car-Kit installed in the car) can talk via messaging capability to another communication device (typically a mobile phone). For example, Bluetooth MAP is used by HP Send and receive text (SMS) messages from a Palm/HP smartphone to an HP TouchPad tablet [5]. Bluetooth MAP is used by Ford in select SYNC Generation 1-equipped 2011 and 2012 vehicles [6] and also by BMW with many of their iDrive systems. The Lexus LX and GS 2013 models both also support MAP as does the Honda CRV 2012. Apple introduces Bluetooth MAP in IOS6.

...and as mentioned in the article linked in my initial post.

Out of interest, how do I determine my bluetooth unit.

Thanks,

(Cold in Canberra today....)

I know it's not really of much help, but on an iPhone, you can use Siri to both read and dictate messasges over the stereo speakers.

On the phone, try depressing whatever button you would normally press to use the software you wish to use and see if it comes through the car speakers, you could work forward from there.

I have a zenec head unit rather than a columbus, but I use an app called 'SMS, my car and Me' (pretty duff name I know!) to read texts out over bluetooth from my Samsung Galaxy S. Does a decent job and the author is very good with support questions. I should also add that in two years of Android phone ownership, it's one of only two apps that I've liked enough to actually buy :giggle:

I guess the Columbus would need to receive the SMS to be able to read it and I thought that was only possible with rsap. There may be other means of doing it not supported by the Columbus. If anybody has something non-rsap working with a bolero then I would be very happy to hear about it as my phone, like so many others, does not offer rsap.
