Using phone as satnav in SE Estate

Featured Replies

Hi!

I've bought a new Octavia SE estate, 2021 model, and was initially disappointed to find it had no satnav (Navigation) installed. I've been recommend to just use my phone, but that apparently requires plugging it in via the USB port.

Firstly, can anyone answer these questions:

i) is it impossible to get the built-in Navigation on this model?

ii) if using a phone, what USB cable is required? There are so many types!

iii) does it actually work, connecting a phone in this way? (i.e. does the satnav display appear on the car screen).

Basic questions maybe, but the customer information from dealers and makers seems patchy at best and downright shoddy most of the time. It's as if we are expected to know.

Thanks!

Nick

When using Android auto or Car play you can display maps on the infotainment screen, can't do it on the car dash screen though. I've found that both Waze and Google maps work pretty much flawlessly and boot up very fast.

SE should work with wireless android auto, brochure says it does.

i) you should try opening the store on your infotainment, i have navigation available there, it's just expensive as heck

ii) any cable should work as long as you have one end that works with your phone and one end with usb-c to plug into the car

iii) it does display maps on infotainment screen, not the drivers display (does SE have traditional dials or a display?)

Hi Zetzet,

Brilliant answer, thanks. In five minutes you told me what my dumb dealer couldn't! 😄  That was literally everything I needed to know and more besides.

(The SE does have screens on the dash, but I only really wanted it on the Infotainment. Thinking about it, using a phone nav via the Infotainment screen seems a much better bet anyway. I'll try the wireless and if that's no good then I'll get the USB-C to C cable.

You're a star

I have the inbuilt nav on my SEL and it’s rubbish compared to Google maps - I’ll never use it unless I lose my phone or something But that’s the same for most cars nowadays hence why CarPlay/Android auto is so popular as a car can just be specced with that rather than develop or buy in a native sat nav.

Some car manufacturers are starting to understand that and are working with Google now to make their own cars use Google maps. Like Volvo or Audi.

Ha ha, that's really useful to know, @MiniNinjaRob. Now I don't feel I'll miss having that feature. (Always nerve-wracking forking out so much for a car only to find you can't figure out the systems!)

That would be good but I use my phone in different cars so as long as I could log into my Google account in the car it would be good but annoying otherwise.

I think it’s wise with the mk4 to spend some time reading the manual while inside the car to make sure you know how to get the best out of everything - also there is always things which you might never know about until is revealed in the owners manual. That has been the case in the last 3 new cars I’ve had which were much more basic electronically.

Don't know how it works exactly, but I've seen videos with Volvo's new infotainment and it seems pretty brilliant. The cars however are too damn expensive for me, for now.

Honestly, this was a big deciding point when I opted for the more basic SE over the SEL. I've rarely seen a decent satnav built into a car, and would imagine (if I can get it working) that I would always use Google Maps, so the upgrade over Bolero seemed pretty pointless to me now that the Bolero comes with the same size screen. I think literally the only thing that I would have preferred in the SEL are the virtual cockpit and the seat material, but not even sure about that with kids and dog!
