89.4 motorway mpg from vRS?!

Featured Replies

Morning all! Just had to share this. Last night I drove from Bristol to Stoke up the M5/M6 and as is my usual practice on every car I do any serious motorway miles in I stuck the vRS on the cruise control at 60mph to save fuel. I was expecting 65, maybe 70mpg at a push, but when I was approaching my stop in Stoke I found that I'd averaged nearly 90mpg! Wtf?!

Now I'm as aware as anyone that trip computers can be a bit optimistic, so I just wanted to ask whether anyone has tested their vRS's real fuel economy and knows roughly how far out the trip computer is. I'm doing my own brim-to-brim test, but hey, I'm impatient. ;)

  • I struggle to get 40mpg! But then I struggle to stay the right side of the speed limit

  • 45mpg sitting on the motorway at 80mph sound ok?

  • I was going to say - mine regularly "shows" over 65mpg on the dash. But working out per gallon manually works out more like 51mpg on my car.

Mine isn't far out at all.

I generally fill and empty each time and use the road trip app on my phone.... My speedo apparently is spot on too according to my gps which I didn't expect given the bigger wheels?!

If you know how to drive I would say 90 on the computer is doable. You may find real terms its about 75mpg. I get 99.9mpg on my comp alot but it ends up being between 70 and 80mpg. still no shabby is it?

It bloody isn't! Well I'll do a test myself and see what's what.

Mine is pretty much bang on the money for accuracy. BLT engine fabias tend to be slightly more optimistic from what iv read. Either was that's not bad going!

I've had my own upto 75mpg on a run back from Bristol sat on cruise control at 60mph before, I'm pretty sure though that it's not all that accurate though the computer.

depending on what size wheels you have, it probably will be correct due to the bigger wheels because most spedos say about 2-3mph more than what you are doing so if it is set up for 16" wheels and you go to i think 17" it may be 18" it will make your spedo exact

and max i have ever got is 67mpg! thats sitting at 60ish i seem to fine using cruse control ruins it for me as soon as i stop using it my mpg just goes up and up :)

Yeah running 17's

My fuel consumption is rubbish on a run, can get it up to 50mpg at best (that ive seen and registered anyway) between Bristol and South Devon... At 70mph that's rubbish for this car I reckon

Did you manage to stay awake :)

Yeah just about, always have other entertainment on a motorway run!

I struggle to get 40mpg! But then I struggle to stay the right side of the speed limit

Don't trust the trip readings, I've found them to be way out, as much as 40% in my case

Use a calculator, the trip mileage and your fuel receipt!

Were you going downhill with a trailing wind?

Just kidding, I managed 68.2mpg yesterday over 70+ miles. I was in no rush and the roads were pretty clear, ideal. I stayed at around 70mph on the motorways and dual carriageways, which accounted for about 80% of the journey. Not bad considering the spec of the car.

With regard to the computer, it is usually optimistic but not by too much, probably 10% or so. It is a pretty good indicator.

i have a mapped bacon lettuce tomato engine 2006 and i can average around 50-60 if i cruise at 60mph without cruise control....

from memory (about three years ago) when i didnt have the map i think i could get 70's but never higher....unless of course you reset the trip when going down a nice long hill.....in that case i have average 120mpg as my best :giggle:

45mpg sitting on the motorway at 80mph sound ok?

That's pretty much what I get dude....

Cheers :)

My meter says about 55mpg but actual is 46/47mpg. Went down to Nottingham yesterday, back this morning. 75/80mph going down. 85/90mph coming back. 400 miles and my actual mpg was 49/50.

I've done too many motorway miles in mine, as you will now find out haha

60mph gets 65-70mpg

70mph gets 55-60mpg

80mph gets 45-50mpg

90mph gets 40-45mpg

I usually sit at 70 on cruise to economise, 140 miles each way to work for me, but to make some progress I find its more economical to drive at 90 with your foot, then drive at 80 on cruise. Unfortunately the fabia is a bit of a brick so you very quickly lose out on mpg as soon as you go over 70!

That said it's still very economical at high speed compared to a lot of other cars, the joys of running on the devils fuel!

Filled up today & (sadly) worked out my actual consumption. Trip said 55mpg, actual was just under 47mpg over 470miles of varied driving.

As said, not amazingly accurate but a decent indicator.

I was going to say - mine regularly "shows" over 65mpg on the dash. But working out per gallon manually works out more like 51mpg on my car.

I started working out brim to brim method since everyone said how inaccurate the readout was, but it was pretty much bang on on my 2003 fabia!

We have seen 83 mpg on our MY56 Fabia VRS, on a run with Cruise set at 60mph, also 56 mpg on our MY58 2.0TDICR 170 Octavia, very happy with all the results.

45mpg sitting on the motorway at 80mph sound ok?

Sounds about what I get. . . just with an extra 2 cylinders! :p

On a serious note, mine used to be 10% inaccurate, same as the speedo (but I assume this relationship was a fluke!).

Well after coming back from Stoke to Bristol and getting a readout of 91.1mpg for the journey, I think my MPG readout is in fantasy land. A bit of man maths tells me that 330 miles on half a 45-litre tank is NOT what the computer says. Call it an average of 90 indicated MPG for the two motorway journeys totalling 260 miles or so, plus 70 miles of biffing about the two cities, at a guesstimated average of 55mpg on the trip.

It doesn't add up, because 22.5 litres is too much. Assuming 330 miles and 22.5 litres (only guessed off the gauge at this stage), that works out as 66.7mpg. The computer is saying something like 78mpg overall. Ah well! I've still got to brim it and find out what's really what, but I don't think it'll have done over 65mpg by the time reality hits. Not bad at all for an engine as old as Bruce Forsyth, but if I'm honest that trip computer did get my hopes up.
