89.4 motorway mpg from vRS?!

Featured Replies

The only way to know exactly is to calculate it brim to brim.

Going off the fuel guage is very innacurate as half on the dial isn't actually half in the tank due to the odd shape etc of the tank.

As above BLT engines seem to have a more innacurate computer than the ASZ.

They are very good on fuel at higher speeds especially the older ones with the really long gearing (70mph= 1900rpm).

Cruise control can use a little more fuel than driving with your foot as it can't read the road ahead and will stay at exactly the same speed and won't slow down a little on hills to get free driving etc.

  • I struggle to get 40mpg! But then I struggle to stay the right side of the speed limit

  • 45mpg sitting on the motorway at 80mph sound ok?

  • I was going to say - mine regularly "shows" over 65mpg on the dash. But working out per gallon manually works out more like 51mpg on my car.

Do some brim-to-brim calcs using fuel receipts and miles driven. Do that over 2-3 tanks.

Then get someone with VCDS to adjust the accuracy of the MPG on the trip comp.

Usually, they're optimistic by 10-15%. But I have seen some that are bang-on, but never any that have been under-reading!

I swear mine should be doing much more.

I've just replaced the MAF, And expected to see my average boost up, but I've hardly nocticed a difference.

I'm averaging 44 mpg on fuelly, 85% motorway driving. Around 390 miles per tank.

I have to really drive carefully to get 50mpgs averaging on my trip. It's more feasible with the new MAF, but I will still never see more than 51mpg. And the minute I stop concentrating on it I'll drop to 47mpg or so.

I don't get it. Brand new MAF, rarely more than myself in the car, 2k old tyres that are checked weekly, shark remap.

Trip showed 48.2mpg, calculated figure 49.1mpg,

I always see this where the trip computer under reads on my actual figure instead of over reading.

Superb L&K TDI 170 MY2012

Best MPG so far was 73.5MPG on M56 doing 56MPH pver 55 miles.

From Ashton to Chester.

Around 390 miles per tank.

Standard car - approx same sort of usage would get approx 390 miles per tank if I were 'tanking' it on the motorway (90ish - hypothetical scenario of course!!).

Depends if your tank is to fuel light on, or beyond as well of course.

That will be around 65MPG real-world. Sounds about right, at 56mph.

It's usually from topped up to a 20 miles after the light has come on.

Have you had yours checked for fault codes?

My 9 mile commute, 56mpg today without even trying to be economical - Also running a Shark map.

I've checked my trip vs calculated and it's pretty much spot on too!

Currently done 330 miles and still have 2 bars over red left, that's mostly urban driving aswell. So I'm expecting 400+ miles :)

Tested actual vs computer a few times on my BLT engined beast, the computer was within a few percent of actual each time.

My personal best is 84.9, Lincoln to Bristol city center, including a few moderate launches, and Bristol rush hour traffic.

Driving within 10mph of the speed limit (up to 80), I tend to get high 50's, but if I put my mind to it I can easily achieve 60-70 on a decent run.

My long term average is mid-40's, but I live city center, and tend to drive small runs, and I do have a fairly heavy right foot..

It was last checked when I had the camshaft fixed around 3 months ago.

Will have a mate do a scan of it in the next couple of weeks. Did you have something in mind i may have wrong? Or just troubleshooting?

I got this ages ago, before I got my lead boots ...

I love how my car is so optimistic ...

I recently did a road trip which was mostly motorway and averaged 72mpg but when i filled up to the click again at the same pump and worked it out, it turned out i had actually achieved 49.6mpg. The most i've had is 84.5mpg on motorway at around 60-65 but is probably 40% less than that due to my computer being overly-optimistic!

Is there a way to recalibrate the car's mpg calculator?

I used to get 500-550 miles per tank in all my 3 fabia vrs no clue what that would be in mpg tho, the computer used to sit at about 53mpg but i never re set it that often

It can be done with VCDS. I'll see if I've still got notes for the process on the Mk1.

What you will need is the percentage difference between the car's MPG readout, compared with your brim-to-brim calcs. Best to do this over 2-3 tanks with varied driving if possible, so it gives the best 'real world' figure it can. Also make sure you reset the trip computer at the beginning of each tank.

Thanks Wardy will be a great help if you can find those notes! Great tip too, I'll work out the average percentage difference for my next few full tanks..

I did well today with cruise on and the occasional squeeze of the smokey pedal

I do not have the patience to get high mpg

80 on mway 55mpg

90 on mway 47mpg

I dont do 70 or 60mph

Not the best picture but I thought I would show you this one.

Driving to work reset the trip/mpg and driving between 40-60mph

172.2 mpg now that Is awesome

OK, but show us the pic on the return (uphill) journey, it really means nothing, it's what you get from a full tank that matters.

DB.

Anyone can drive to the top of a hill then re-set the trip!!

Awaits someone to post a picture of the trip showing some horizontal lines...

I don't care how optomistic it is.

I just look at the figure on the screen after a 'granny run' and bask in a warm glow of smugness.

my figures depend on what brand of fuel i put in, i.e shell v-power will give me 520 miles  per tank full (brim-brim), tesco diesel :( is 490 miles average, thats with 70 miles left in tank on trip computer,

kind of worked out my car at the moment my car averages 1 litre of fuel does 10 miles, is this too accurate. standard vrs 06 blt.
