Possible design fault?

My DIY cover is doing a grand job of keeping that end of the engine, alternator etc spotless after a a month of driving on salted roads.

  • Doesn't touch the alternator at all and there is a pipe running down in front of the said shield and alternator, aircon pipe maybe. It started raining when I looked earlier, I'll take some pics of it

  • Found it !!! Here is the pic of the front radiator/grille assembly when it was removed from the car to trial fit the new engine. This is the non-Greentec 60PS SE. (With the same cover as a 75PS Gree

  • Looked at the Cititgo's in my dealer this pm. None had the 'cover'. Checked in the parts dept listings and it is not shown as a separate part either, only the complete plastic frame known as a 'loc

To throw a spanner in the works, my Citigo was built mid October, has no aircon but does have the cover!

Now that is a spanner - makes you think about the explanation given doesn't it? Thing is - yes the silver coloured AC pipe was very visible but so is the alternator etc without the cover. Honestly guys - sorry to go on about it but the cover I made is keeping everything spotlessly clean and salt free. I have kept an eye on how everything behaves and I don't see any problem at all. In any case I haven't really done anything different to the cars that do have a cover.

I have just decided to drive the thing and not worry.

It has the 5 year warranty, if the engine explodes Skoda can fit a new one.

I don't think anything is going to explode I just like my engines shiney clean "yawn" bit faddy like that and a five minute job is saving me a lot of work.

I am just sat in local Skoda Dealer waiting for winter boots to be fitted on wife's Yeti. There is a Citigo in the showroom (just delivered) with AC and a "black pipe" behind the grill but it has the cover. The explanation given as to reasons for the cover just doesn't stack up.

Weirder and weirder.

Just given mine a wash and hose down. On lifting the bonnet to top up the washer bottle I did notice it was bone dry around the area of the alternator and those pipes. I did give the front of the car a good blast with the hose whilst washing.

I still maintain the cover is there for protection rather than to hide a silver coloured pipe etc, despite what Skoda says.

Exactly the same here Mick. Took delivery of car without a cover and already the alloy parts at the end of the engine were starting to corrode and they weren't at the other end. Made my cover from day one and a month later and plenty of salted roads, all is still like new. It would be very disappointing if the provider of the reason (to cover a silver coloured pipe) was not telling the truth.

This is the 'lock carrier D' (radiator support to us!) from the ETKA parts list for my 13 June 2012 build Elegance 75PS Greentech. Note no separate cover is shown. As I stated on 1st October (page 3), the parts list wording states this carrier (180 805 588 D) is used up to 24/10/2012. From 25/10/11 (this must be a misprint and mean 2012) it is replaced by 180 805 588 F.

The subject is open for discussion!

I still believe that Skoda are field testing the two options, hence the reason why we never achieved an answer that stood up to scrutiny. Anyway, in my post copied above I pointed out that the complete radiator support (known as Lock Carrier 'D' ) was being changed as from 25 October. It would be intriguing to find somebody who has a Greentech 75PS built after that date, as that car could well have the final version, with or without the cover!

These are just some thoughts on a reason - I am not worried that I don't have a cover - been through some terrible wet weather and the Citigo never missed a beat and I do like to see proper airflow cooling under the bonnet! Its very important in the terrifically hot summer we are going to have next year (maybe!), following the coldest winter for a hundred years that we are about have (according to the Daily Express!!) :sun: :(

Don't worry too much - the Daily Express said the same in 2010 - only that time it was going to be the coldest for 300 years!

Yes, the Daily Express have at least one "apocalyptic weather" headline every week!

I don't know if anyone is interested anymore, but i have of course been following this thread, while waiting for my Citigo. I picked it up from the dealer yesterday, and i do have the cover:

My car is build week 46 (Built on the 14th of november). It is a 60HP Active with A/C.

I picked mine up mid October with no cover but made my own. Since then done 1500 miles on salted roads and my alternator and that end of the engine and bay are spotlessly clean. Wondering if the cars without covers are staying clean and corrosion free under there.

No chrome on the front grill of an 'Active'? Didn't notice that before...

"Citigo's built after 16th August 2012 are fitted with a black air-conditioner hose, so there's no longer a requirement for the

cover to be fitted."

So that sounds like a load of tosh, although this particular model isn't a UK supplied car.

Still think the've dropped the cover as a way of cost cutting or supply problems then obviously changed the colour of the hose as above.

We collected our 60ps "S" model this morning. No air con but it has a shield....

My home made cover still in place and engine compartment spotlessly clean and no corrosion.

That's good.

Amazingly, even though mine doesn't have the cover, it appears to have no corrosion either, at the moment at least.

Well I thought about this thread today as I was cleaning my Citigo. I gave it a good clean, even in the engine bay. It didn't really need much of a clean in there but wondered how are those cars fairing without the black plastic cover on the grill, is the alternator still looking clean?

I had been wondering the same thing. My diy cover has worked perfectly and there is no "furry" aluminium at all under the bonnet. I was in the dealers the other day and couldn't resist a peek at the new cars. They are still being produced with the covers and I didn't see any without.

My car has the cover and it went down the production line in April, so they are still being fitted. Mine has the silver air-con pipes too. :wonder:

We got one with ours that was delivered 1/3/13

I popped into the dealers for a service the other week, and all the new Citigo's had the cover, so the SUK message doesn't seem to make any sense.

My car is booked in for next Thursday to be put in the diagnosis system as when I picked it up from repair centre it didn't want to open or start, guy started it using minus terminal on battery, next day same thing and after a 30 miles drive

So call out skoda Assistance (RAC) starts it using proper way, said battery wasn't charging properly

Alternator??
