Fabia Vrs Oil Fix

Was the electrode still there or had it disappeared? "Sorry just seen your pic, that will be my slow typing"

I would have expected the fitter to have cleaned the plugs before re installing. However, just because that is what I would have done does not mean that others would do the same :) The really annoying thing is that the dealer only had the car on Friday to sort out a very intermitant hesitation/missfire (honestly only occurred a few times) and to see if it is possible to re set the engine idle as it is now just over a 1000 rpm in neutral, and if you drop it into S or M the revs do not rise. Car was returned with the idle unchanged as they are awaiting a response from Skoda and the hesitation/missfire being blamed on a slighly loose connection. Now it is worse than ever. Called the dealer on Monday (08:30) and reported the issue and still waiting for a reply :(

Any special tools needed to remove the plugs on the TFSI? I have to admit that I probably haven't changed a plug in at least 15 years. Also what would be the gap setting if I were to do this?

  • The vrs won't have the oil in the system long enough for it to do any damage

  • As someone who fought and won against Skoda.... Twice, you need to keep on at them! I rejected my car after it had 4 new engines in 2 years (they admitted there was a problem) so I'm happy to help you

  • Rag it to the redline on a regular basis from day 1 of ownership and its less likely you'll have issues. End of. Mine runs super sweet with no oil problemo "running in" this way hehe. When I sell it I

It was kind of there...

Right, two things, it is plain as day it burns copious amounts of oil and the plug is running cold (black ceramic insulator and should be shades of brown) as it is over fuelling as well/ignition timing is too retarded. That engine is not suitable for use in current state of tune really. Electrode has burnt off due to deposits keeping it glowing hot all the time.

Jerry, I don't know where the plugs are and how long the wrench should be. I'd be interested (Damo souls know ;) )how to do it as I'd like to check the compression ratio. No clue how to do it on automatic box lol.

My revs stay below 900 in N, rise to circa 1k in D with foot on te brake at the lights and go to 1.1k in S

The hardest bit is getting the coil packs off...

Standard tools will reach the plugs, you just need something to grip them...

Damo

Out of interest where all four like that or just one? And if just one which was it because I am prepared to hazard a guess it was probably number three.

That guess would be bang on...

Thanks Damo, there is definately a theme here. The same happened to yours, Wills and mine. The only difference being that we both received new engines (Mine had also burnt out a valve). I wonder how many others have had a similar issue? What is the current status on your car?

I believe that this may well be associated with a fueling issue to cylinder three in terms of mixture control or a valve stem seal not working properly and therefore allowing oil to seep down the stem where it burns in the hot exhaust gases and causes damage.

Any theories from the engineering folk out there?

There was a suspect batch of injectors on early 2010 build engines (apparently had them on my Scirocco) but if cylinder 3 is a common failure cylinder it suggests something really wrong with the basic design of the engine.

When the 'Roc started eating spark plugs it was always cylinder 2 or 3; never 1 or 4. Coolant path maybe? Wrong spark plugs in my case (well done, VW parts system) and you apparently could see the ceramic covered in red spots within a few miles of a new set being installed.

Current status = broken...

Waiting for it to go into Claybank for further investigation on the 5th.

Re raised the oil consumption issue aswel as I am literally just within tolerances. So that is also on the list for investigation...

I am also going through a rejection process with my finance house, I'm just awaiting details from a dealer I complained about... -_-

You know, when I read about all those numerous dealers visits, investigations, piston rings, breather mods, intake manifolds and God knows what else I really think it would be cheaper for Skoda just to replace that motor. As an added bonus it would make lots of people much happier with their products...

Exactly Jabozuma.... Skoda UK asked me if I wanted a free ipod connector fitted or a service on the car. I'm sure that'll really help my poorly car!

How about a car that is actually doing what it is supposed to be doing - driving faultlessly without the need to go to the dealers every other week or tow an oil tanker and roof box of spare spark plugs...

just for comparison,in a car that doesn't use any oil at all.. these were my plugs after 40k of hard motoring.... (standard time to change them)

They are perfect, this is how plugs should look like exactly!

EDIT, Could shine a light inside the plug a take a photo as well?

that was in the dealers at the service , I asked to look at the old plugs so I could check the condition, they were thrown after that photo... I supplied the dealer plugs to replace them, and put NGK 8's in....

Jabo, whilst a very nice idea, i really believe that one of the issues here is they don't actually know what is wrong with them so they can not be certain that fitting a new engine would perhaps make any difference. Or perhaps, there is a cheaper solution out there? But then, i can be incredibly scinical at times.

Well my car is getting better by the day...

I have had some better news regarding my oil burner. Further test carried out and a new engine being fitted. New, new engine apparently CTHE. All being well ready next week.

arnold, just run in please, properly - at least then you'd be able to say you did all you could ...

After 700 miles the oil level on the dipstick has not moved by a nanometer so perhaps the way I run mine in worked or perhaps I was just the lucky one as we do have another CTHE which has a small oil addiction problem. Mind you, nothing as much as some people are experiencing here.

I am carrying an idea of writing a letter to Skoda HQ in Czech Republic asking for some answers as there seems to be no rhyme no reason to what is happening. I gave up guessing really after I spend hours reading all sorts of material on line and elsewhere...

Maybe they do not have a clue but i do not believe in that at all. They know perfectly well just made a commercial decision which looked good at the time...

Jabozuma, I certainly will give that a go nothing to lose. Just as i had started to get a decent mpg from my old engine im back to square one. I will keep you posted on how things go.. I may even have to update my profile picture too.

Jabozuma, probably better writing it to VW (VAG) in Germany, as thats where this engine is built, not in czech....

If you have the address of the factory's head office I can write it in German :)

UK head office at Yeoman's Drive, Milton Keynes. I worked for VW Group there a few years ago.

When I had my Lupo GTi I wrote to Wolfsburg (in German) with a query - received a polite response in next to no time.
