For overseas Briskies, be a little careful, as I believe there are Castrol products with a similar name but are NOT the same equivalent.

Quite correct, the brand name is exactly that, a name which is important to the blender/supplier e.g. Castrol.

However as a user, it is important to check an oils approval status, which in this case needs to be to the correct VW performance spec which will normally be listed on the back of the container and identified in your handbook/service book.

Just because an oil is of the correct viscosity grade does not mean it has the same performance credentials.

Oz fabia I bet my ass you will need the breather pipe mod which by the way only slows down the process. Honestly I listen and read ad I can't believe you guys are so content on checking your oil on a daily basis . This just seems insane in 2012 not 1988

I check my oil every trip after hard blast because i am topping up the Screen Wash anyway & so that i can reply to posts on Briskoda.

When you have no Oil usage

& you are sure you have no oil usage, its hardly necessary to check the oil.

It is a slightly unique engine being 1390cc & Twin Charged.

It can be economical & then pretty sporty & some Oil usage when being first used and in the first few 1000 miles are expected with some engines.

Not all & really it should not be with any.

What surprises me is when people know their engine does use oil

& do not check it at least when filling with fuel or every few hundred miles,

or untill they get 'the problem' sorted out with Skoda.

It seems lots of the faulty vRS Twin Chargers are running too much or not enough Oil.

Some Skoda Workshops do not seem able to send them out with 3.6 litres of oil in from New & after doing a PDI.

Some can not send them out with the correct Quantity of oil from Servicing them,

replacing or rebuilding the engines.

*Best tell that to Skoda/VAG, because i keep telling them.,

but i get poo pooed by Skoda Technicians. "How can someone not fill correctly with the correct amount of oil?"

(Must be similar ate SEAT, VW, Audi Workshops, not that many Twin Chargers around really,

but enough getting annual services, reporting high oil useage or getting the full official 'Oil Consumption Checks'.

Freedom of Information or some type of 'Consumer Rights' should reveal how many VAG engines are undergoing 'Oil Consumption' checks.

In the UK, 'Trading Standards' should be able to get 'VOSA' to find that out from 'VAG')

Get a Workshop to show you how they check the oil level, some are totally clueless & yet thats their full time job,

doing it dozens of times a week. *Professionals.!!*

In the two 250ml top-ups I've done, the level went from the 1/4 to 1/2 cross-hatched level, and from 1/2 to 3/4 cross-hatched level. I wonder if I should be leaving it another few minutes to check the level after topping up? Does it take time for that new oil to drop down into where it needs to be?

It does say in the handbook that if you need to add oil then do it in 500ml quantities,so too obsessive to do it 250 ml at a time,mate.

One does get obsessive about this oil business... I blame all these on-line fora. Then again, if I didn't know about it, I'd be checking once a month, and who knows what might happen? :think:

not a lot, apart from the orange oil can warning on the maxi dot coming on.

some are good, some are bad, and some are just ridiculous. dont fret about it. if you have a 'wrongun' there is little to be done until either Skoda/VAG agree consumption is excessive or the engine fails.

and if it does fail hopfully you will be within warranty :)

There is a tendancy on forums for people to post bad news. If something is working, e.g. the oil breather fix, then likely as not you are not going to report the fact. I have now counted 14 Briskoda members who have reported that their car had the oil breather modification and 10 of those went on to say it did not work. At least 6 of these have had or are being offered replacement engines and 1 exchanged the car.

Can anybody confirm that the oil breather fix has reduced oil consumption to an acceptable level?

(i.e. consumption well within the 0.5 litre per 1000 km handbook limit).

Neither Skoda UK or the dealers are prepared to listen to information obtained from internet forums (partly understandable) and imply that problems are not so widespread!

If it helps the garage rang me today to ask how far in to my 600 miles I was since the oil breather kit was installed and said the other car like mine under going these oil tests had just done 700 miles and used 0.3 litres of oil which was within spec. It hasn't had a new engine like mine though. I'll have reached 600 miles by next week so I'll let you know how I get on at the garage after an oil check.

I hope soon that their, 'within spec' will get challenged in a UK Civil Court at some point.

This is a figure that you only find out once you have purchased a vehicle and received the Owners Manual.

Why not put, 'may be expensive to keep running on Engine Oil' ?

VAG-SKODA/VW/Audi/SEAT need to print that in the Brochures, Sales rooms etc.

To suggest that that is normal or 'within spec' is just ridiculous.

It can be the case as they say in the first 3000 km or 5000, what ever.

Then they need to be up front with that.

Personally i think it will need to be VOSA that get involved more closely,

or an individual or 'Class Action' against VAG.

There will be some Law Firm out there interested in being the ones to pursue that Legal Case, i would think/hope.

Very pleased at the moment. New engine fitted 600 miles ago and still no oil usage :whew: . Long may this continue. Car still has to go back though as the main dealer butchered the ECU cage with a grinder. WTF. New cage on order and sheer bolts. I would post a picture but i have no idea how to.

It is a shame because it goes so well and you would not know there is a problem. Just waiting to hear but should have a new engine fitted in January and I did ask if it would be a new or recon engine and he told me it would be new.

So its bad news for my car. Since the new engine and oil breather kit was installed my oil consumption is no better, if slightly worse. Over a litre put in today for 600 miles. Trading Standards now beckons as I don't see a way out of this mess that has been ongoing for 11 months.

Bloody hell vicky so sorry, new engine and breather plaster , so it'll be unfit for purpose what's going on ? Skoda vag need to sort this debacle

I'm devastated. When I got this car I was excited like a kid in a sweet shop and all i've had is 11 months of grief and numerous trips to the garage. Unfit for purpose so I now begin the battle of what happens next. With all the problems I've had my local garage have been absolutely fantastic in trying to help me.

Was it you who had the engine number "restamped"? If so this seems "a tad" dodgy to me. Over people had new engines with new numbers etc...

Yes that was me. I don't buy that story at all as I've had conflicting stories from my local garage and Skoda UK. I even rang DVLA and VOSA for their opinions and the DVLA said they'd never heard that story. Hopefully my third letter to Skoda will really force them to act on this issue. How is your car doing?

I refuse to check oil my more and at least once a day redline her :) . The last time I checked it was down from middle of A area to 2/3rds up the hatched area.

I wouldn't know if that was good or bad as Skoda have done all my readings. Maybe I should have redlined mine more!

Mine is being dealt with by Beadles, Maidstone who have been excellent.

In the course of sorting this VRS Oil consumption problem out. I have been told a number of things by the Skoda garage which I need to correct some of the comments on here.

1, The Fabia II VRS cannot have variable service. It is strictly fixed services every 12 months

2, Although we are supposed to use the very expensive Castrol edge 5W30, 504 rating, it states clearly on the Skoda maintenance printout (which I have seen), that VAG approved 502 is to be used on the fixed service. So most of us are paying over the odds for no good reason. (They use 502 rating Quantum (this is the commercial version of Castrol) that has been put into my car on both services)

3, I have the same result of increased FUEL consumption (not something you would notice unless you look for it, so well done to whoever first posted this info) after the new breather having been fitted. I have gone from an average(2) of 39.5 miles per gallon to an average 35.5 miles per gallon. (I personally believe this is possibly due to the gearbox now not changing up through the gears soon enough, but this is from observation so just my opinion. I guess there must be a pressure sensor that has been affected by the new breather).

4, You will visually notice that most oil usage is used, when you toe the accelerator from a start or if you accelerate after hitting a bump! (one day I will find out what our road tax goes to fund, clearly not road surfacing) So presumably, it is when the oil is being thrown around the engine and therefore past either valve seals (which I think) or piston rings.

After my car then failing the second oil consumption test since the breather was fitted, I decided that there was no way I was going to have a replacement engine fitted due to any other problems the excess oil going through the system will have caused such as damage to the Catalytic converter, which will reduce its life (you won't know this till it needs an MOT which is after the warranty runs out!).

The bottom line. Which I have to congratulate Skoda UK agreeing to:

I am having my car replaced with a brand new car (another VRS, as its still the best car in its category for fuel economy, power and practicality ratio), with me only paying for the USE of the vehicle for two years (which I think is perfectly reasonable) based on pence per mile. As I have only covered 15k in two years, all I can say is bravo Skoda UK for a good deal.

I'm changing from the green/black roof to the blue/black roof this time. It means next time I leave my car parked in summer, it wont be the car that's the only one in the car park that's covered in greenfly as they think its a big plant! (True!)

Odd....mine's on variable...where did that come from? If so, somebody let Wayside know they're setting them wrong as mine's on variable.
