I've got a fabia 1.6 tdi and I don't do much mileage and the engine light keeps coming on about every 6-7 weeks.

Skoda send out a mechanic and he clears the filter and takes it out on a good run, my question is shouldn't skoda sort out the problem ? I mean I shouldn't have to go for a long drive every other week to sort out a default in their production? Has anyone else had the same problem? Is there a modification that can be done? Because at the moment skoda are sending someone out as the car is still under warranty, what happens when that runs out? Do I have to pay?

Is it a DPF you are referring to? I believe diesel cars need a long-ish, hard-ish workout regularly or the DPF can get clogged up.

The salesperson should of asked you what sort of driving you do when you were buying the car, if your only doing short mileage, or not a lot then the tdi engine with the DPF is most certainly not the car to have as you will continue to get the problems due to the nature of the way the filter works. Unfortuantly there isn't much that can be done apart from taking it for a long journey every once in a while, I don't even believe that the DPF can be deleted on this engine yet, and even if it could then you would lose your warranty anyway. You would probably be better suited to a petrol engine, especially if you are doing low mileage.

Cleared the yellow light every time without a proper long run by driving round local bypass with revs very high

Got fed up in the end (other probs also) and got rid for a vrs instead

It's not a fault with the car it's a fault with its use.

Shouldn't be done under warranty either, it's not a manufacturer defect.

Common misconception, revs don't need to be high. 2,200 rpm is ideal for regenerating.

That would make sense, my dealership told me between 40-50mph in 5th which is around that rpm.

Can be in any gear. As regeneration required a pre combustion injection. If engine revs are to high then there just isn't time for it.

Constant speed is more important than high speed but tbh given the right use it should be automatic and barely noticeable.

Yeah I figured it would be any gear and they were aiming for revs more than anything.

I've only noticed my occur once, my Monte sat idling at 1,000 after a few miles on a bypass, i assumed this was it finishing off a regen. To be fair though most of my driving is down a 8 mile bypass at 50 which should suit regen anyway.
