REMAP - Insurer now refusing to provide a quote

Featured Replies

Hi

I've just had a letter from the RAC saying they are unable to provide an insurance renewal quote despite them having insured me with a declared remap for the last two years. I've rung them and they tell me it's because of the remap (or engine modification in their jargon) that they cannot quote.

Can anyone 1) Suggest an insurer they can recommend and 2) relate any similar experiences?

I have a totally clean licence and have never had an accident. I last claimed for vehicle theft eight years ago.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers

Sammy

  • Overall insurance companies do rip you off for a simple remap and the increased premiums are disproportionate generally speaking. That said it's not about the amount they rip you off or the odds of ge

  • Fair point...........they would have to be very special, mainly in the needs department

They left me in the same boat a couple of years ago

I'm now with Admiral :)

That's interesting Brimma - Admiral declined me before I went to the RAC as the power increase in the remap was over 20%! When did you last renew, if you don't mind me asking please?

That might be the difference then - my increase was under 20%

But it does include the suspension, brakes, wheels, tints etc

Hope something comes up for you :)

They've obviously changed their criteria for remaps, likely due to claims.

Insurers manage out risky groups all the time. Try Chris knot who sponsor the forum and have a profile on here too.

Greenlight do modifications, i'm currently insured with them, very knowledgable i've found.

Though, now i have a standard car i can shop about a bit more come renewal time

Try Brentacre, they were very good when I had my modified vRS. I'm with Admiral now as they were cheaper as my Golf is standard.

Or try Adrian Flux. Another site sponsor and worth talking to. They are a broker and went out of the way to find me a two-car deal when we bought a second car - my wife had been a named driver for several years and has no NCB of her own. AF were very helpful.

Good luck - enjoy your remap ;-)

What's everyone paying extra on insurance after a remap please, the % increase will do if you don't want to be reminded of the actual cost!

Cheers

Ade, 56 £250 PA for new Blackline....with SAGA!.

Hard to believe considering how common the procedure is - the way they react on the phone it's like you've just told them you've got 2 heads or something. Having said that, when I declared the RARB on the Fabia, that really threw them. They wanted to know why I taking it rallying and why a roll cage was required..... :wall:

It'll get to the point where insurers refuse to cover anyone other than the over 50's living in the Cotswolds and driving a Kia Picanto due to risk. It's getting silly and will only encourage dishonesty. Bit like this.....

:wonder:

EDIT - it went up by about £200 on the Octy for a 35bhp increase and about £150 on the Fabia for a 30bhp increase. £750 and £500 respectively. Suspension mods hardly made a difference as it wasn't lowered, just 'uprated', and the leather interior never affected it at all.

The wifes Polo Tdi is mapped and is insured with Aviva, and extremely competitive they were too.

Maybe you get a discount because only a very special kind of person would want to steal your car. :giggle:

As said, try a broker instead who might be a bit more understanding :)

Have a look in the insurance section on here, and also at the insurance site sponsors. I'd also echo the Brentacre recommendation, I've used them several times in the past and the service was excellent.

I have yet to get a better quote than Chris Knott for the last 6 or 7 years now.

Can i suggest Cheaper Car Insurance, saved me £200 on renewal and very good with, points, mods, liscense issues.....

Why tell them?

Greenlight wouldnt touch the octavia modded but would honour the fabia's renwal.
