REMAP - Insurer now refusing to provide a quote

Featured Replies

Actually my insurer did initially tell me they need to know whenever I use roof bars! The call centre guy fell back from that when I queried if they *really* want me to call several times a weekend.

Were they going to charge you £35 a time too?

  • Overall insurance companies do rip you off for a simple remap and the increased premiums are disproportionate generally speaking. That said it's not about the amount they rip you off or the odds of ge

  • Fair point...........they would have to be very special, mainly in the needs department

They did initially want to, for putting a note on my file, but I told them that I was unhappy about that and they actually waived the fee.

It's all about reasonable insurers/brokers. There's no charge for alterations to my policy and the only changes that incur a possible premium increase are those that increase BHP.

If you have a modified car, you need to be using a broker. That's my long-held view anyway.

You guys in the UK have some really really crappy insurance companies.

Only one thing we love more than abiding by petty rules and regulations is having a good old whinge about them.

Excuse me, I was just about to reply to that post. Would you mind waiting, there is a queue!

Well folks, a big thank you for your helpful suggestions. In the end I've used Chris Knott (via the very helpful Rebecca) and the quote came in at £585 in the end, which was an improvement on last year's RAC quote, so I'm a happy bunny. I really appreciate the time folk here have taken to help me out.

Cheers

Sammy

My specialist quote was £380 with remap,VRS wheels, dab, Bluetooth, jumbobox, raised boot floor, about £100 up on last year's direct line quote for a standard vehicle, so I'm not too upset.

I just hope the specialists aren't doing the introductory pricing discount thing like the mainstream insurers.

Read most of this post and I see it like this. If you don't tell your insurance fine, the company will still honour the 3rd party in full, just don't cry if you dont get a payout.

Weither you should or shouldn't declare is down to you.

Intetesting I've been playing the car insurance give me a price on a different car game. I dont know why but an Audi A1 1.4tsi dsg sport is 500 a year cheaper than I'm paying for my fiat 500? How does that figure? Also a fabia mk2 vrs new is £740 a year yet my diesel octavia comes out at £1100 a year!

Im with Prestige Inasurance. They undercut Admiral, greenlight and adrian flux by ALOT and offered greater cover for the modifications.

Looked at insurance with a view to getting my 4x4 TDI Mapped recently.

Was all looking positive until they asked me for the % power increase. Up to 20% wasn't a problem and boosted the premium by about £115 from £205 to £320 which I thought was ok. Problem with the 1.9 TDI 105 which shark take to 145Hp is that its circa 40% more HP. Quote then came in at £520 meaning I could insure a VRS running 240HP (20% increase) for the same as a 1.9 TDI with 145HP.....mental.

Gave up in the end.

Back on track, try Brentacre. They've just quoted me less than my current insurance and that covers anything but something which will up the power by x percent (can't remember the figure). They did the same for my old Polo GTI... cheaper than other places, RAC included, were quoting standard.

That's because a vrs has updated suspension and brakes to cope with that level of power. A 1.9 running 145 is more powerful than a PD140. A PD140 has beefier struts and brakes than a 1.9 for a reason...........

+1 on the declaration issue-well put!

Yep, insurance companies don't seem to like out of the ordinary- guess it's because they haven't enough data to accuratly gauge the risk or it shows that those who mod their cars have more claims soooo they er on the cautious side (in their favour) which is reasonable as they're running a business not a charity IMO.

M12 MKD's twin air might be suffering teenage syndrome, bit like the corsa. Price comparison sites and brokers are a good place to start but not always the cheapest/best option. I went direct to saga in Jan of this year for my 1.4TSI and got quoted £200 after previous insurer Admiral quoted loads more. They charged me less than £50 when I changed to the blackline in October, most of which was the admin fee. I was expecting the usual 'We've now got your business and had you for the first year so now have this' renewal quote. But no... £237 all in. I'll keep mine standard thankyou, everyone else can make their own minds up to suit them selves

cheers

I can totally see your point but in my experience the only time I have felt the brakes and suspension on any of my cars really struggle is when towing and the 1.9 4wd is rated to tow more than a 2wd 140pd or a Vrs which must hint at the braking/suspensions capability. I only want the extra power for towing boats up steep hills.

Ade,

I think your right about the twinair, though in my case its mostly down to my little brother being on the policy. Even still £1000+ a year is a joke for a city car.

Even a fabia vRS is cheaper (brother included).

I normally do the comparison sites first then phone about.

Haaaaa. he truth comes out. Little boys and insurance companies don't mix. My son passed his test 15 months ago. The daughter was driving my 1.2 Clio at the time and the insurance cost £550 per year with admiral. They wanted £3500 to put him on the policy, so I paid him off, promised to be dads taxis until he went to Uni and bought a Skoda just to get into the part. Th ewife had a right strop and said she'd stick him on her policy until she got quoted over £6k. Did I Laff..... Not half pop pickers...

If you're feeling kind one of those traking devises would cut the insurance, but they often have limitations as to when you can use the car and flag up nasty things like aggressive driving and exceeding the speed limit to the insurance company so are not a good idea unless everyone driving the car it's fitted to plays by the rules...A good idea if it's just your Bro's car though for when he gets one of his own

I say little as in to me, infact his 29 lol

But yes it is him that has doubled it though my postcode really does it!

Ah yes the postcode lottery-seen it on the telly! I thought the streets of London were paved with gold, hence the higher premiums. While out in the sticks the streets are full of potholes so we pay less....

Indeed the streets are made of gold and the roads as smooth as a F1 race track.

Ahh look a unicorn! :-P

And out in the sticks I live 10 miles away from the crash for cash capital of the UK so pay an inflated premium because of all the dodgy whiplash claims.

The 4wd might have the same struts and brakes as the higher power models.

In my many years experience of insuring modified cars a very dim view is taken by insurers of high power gains without the corresponding brake and suspension upgrades. It is all about risk, and 40% extra power on standard brakes and suspension will be seen as a very high risk.

What if you bought the car and you were unaware of the the remap and you would off course insure it as standard, just a thought. Some years ago i remember going to examine the brakes on several vehicles involved in a injury R.T.A. one was a MGB GT. As i had a interest in cars generally i gave the car a going over aah upp whats this under the bonnet a V8 i see from a Rover or MGB GT V8. The insurance payed up never checked it. No i would not condone this kind of cover up. People with minis did it all the time 850 to 1275 cooper s. But its wrong, however i think a remap is different if its aimed at fuel consumption and usability why should your insurance go up at all.

For anyone still looking it you arent too young & have experience of performance or modded cars try Pace ward, I have found them excellent on a hugely modified car, 65% power increase, they can also add a trackday option to the policy which is competitive & you only pay for the days you use it
