REMAP - Insurer now refusing to provide a quote

Featured Replies

Well then, I an not trolling. I just wondered why you insist on telling them.

Yes it may invalidate your insurance, and will certainly give them an "out" when they are faced with a big claim and want to avoid paying.

But are there any obvious signs that your car has been re-mapped? Are the insurance companies really checking the ECU's of crashed cars to see if the data has been altered? Will they ever know, if you don't tell them?

There's a good chance they will check yours now if you make a claim!

Paranoia

Is it really worth the risk of jail time and never being able to get insurance again? If you are involved in something serious enough they will go through everything they can.

Connecting to the ECU and reading the code/checksum and comparing it to the manufacturer's DB is not particularly difficult.

Jail time. Please who's trolling now?

£690 I am getting quoted in UK ............. 10 years NCB in UK ffs.. It's a shame as my old remapped Fabia VRS was £330 4 years ago and stayed around £300 on the 3 policies I took out on it, same post code.. Oh well I guess they will get their pound of flash as I have little choice. Will shop around more nearer to the time but I have been about a good few places that was cheapest.

As for remap and telling them...... why not tell them your cars a 1990 1.1 fiesta while your at it and make it worth your while.

Overall insurance companies do rip you off for a simple remap and the increased premiums are disproportionate generally speaking. That said it's not about the amount they rip you off or the odds of getting caught committing insurance fraud. What it is about is being a responsible, mature and accountable adult, not only taking the risk of loosing your car in the event of a claim refusal and likely hood of being prosecuted (good luck getting insurance after that) but the liability for which you may have towards a third party. If someone cannot afford the insurance increase from a remap then they can't afford the remap. That's my view and I feel the view of many here.

point to note this is an open public forum insurance companies specifically employ people to get out of claims. Would be very simple to find someone in minutes if they wanted especially if they have a briski sticker on car and pics on here. Then it's only a matter of searching for your own confession.

Any, and I mean any excuse to fleece you for more money. Anything that is compulsory is open to financial abuse.

You need fuel for your car: prices are always on an upward trend. (Double-bubble on the duty and tax!) (Always some conflict or earthquake or hurricane or some other Jack Pollocks)

Insurance: always an upward trend (Oh all those uninsured drivers we have to pay out for. If only insurance wasn't so expensive, more people would have it?)

Tax: always an upward trend (Well, you know who's screwing you for that one ;) )

Soon a Briskoda sticker............no...........................even Briskoda membership will be a "risk" as you "might be might be tempted into modding your car". :|

If it was a motorbike its got so bad with declaring every little mod I would have to declare a sticker on it!

What if you had a sticker that said "Modification free" ? ;) ;)

Insurers ARE checking ecu's actively when sent to a body repair shop. Even if you insist on using your own, they will still send one of their assessors round to check. Pretty much a given if it's a hot hatch.

I can confirm this; they had an assessor come and plug a laptop into my vRS CR when it was in the bodyshop after some **** on a moped crashed into me. Fortuneatly the remap was declared to my insurer.

Well I hope you don't go reading a lot more into my comments than are intended. :hi:

But the choice is a simple one. Either don't get your car re-mapped, get it remapped and keep it secret (and live in a paranoid state), or tell your insurer. Whatever path you take, kindly stop whining about it.

They would most likely still want to know :p when you go into modifications on online quotes in most now things like the tank pad stickers are flipping listed..... frame protectors everything. When I ordered my new bike I had all the bits like that as options so that's its supplied state not modified after just to stick it to them!

I feel that pain.

Certain Felicias came with alloys, but not locking nuts. Last year when sorting the insurance out, I noticed that locking nuts were considered a modification. I queried this. The explanation that came back was that if you've had to put locking nuts on, you *must* also have put alloys on. (I can see the thinking here.) There was no room for "car came with alloys but no locking nuts". If I put nuts on, the premium went up. If I put nuts on and had an accident, they said the policy would be void and were making a note of my inquiry of the file as well. If I didn't and the wheels were nicked, it was less than my excess to have them replaced. Lose-lose.

I still can't understand how locking nuts would be considered a modification if used on wheels already fitted to the car! :o :o

(Unless they were lighter and therefore increased it's performance ;) ;))

I've just had a letter from the RAC ...

RAC are odd. I had a 306 insured with them and called up to change this to the Blackline VRS for the remaining 6 months of the policy. Their system said the insurer (RAC are a broker) wouldn't allow a change to the VRS so I'd have to cancel and take out a new 12 mth policy.

She entered all the details and the best price came back from ... the same insurer who said they wouldn't swap the original policy to the VRS!

I feel that pain.

Complain to the insurance ombudsman. You are lowering their risk.

SORN'd the Truck (now in office car park) bought an Octavia instead. ;) ;) When it comes to getting the old girl back on the road, and I encounter this, she won't be a daily runner, so I'll have the leisure of following it all through. :) :)

Be civil to each other please.

Greenlight just quotes me £393 all in and no increase if I get a stage one remap ... Good price (150 quid less) compared to my renewal... But reading the small print I won't be covered for loss or damage from.theft or attempted theft unless I have a thatcham cat 2 immobiliser fitted. Is the factory protection in this category

Is that exclusion as a result of having the remap?

No.. Car want remapped yet. I mentioned I was considering it when I was on the phone to them getting the quote. These are the terms with or without the remap. My concern was they never even addressed what security it has at the time of the quote.

How could your insurance company prove you had a remap? They'd need any original file from the car for comparison.

Maybe they would compare the download from the ecu of the car against what they have from the manufacturer?
