Whats the True BHP ?

Featured Replies

Have heard in the past that the true BHP of the vRS is around 145 although it is listed as 130,

0-60 9.6, I dont have any fancy gadgets but on a flat road I timed it with a stopwatch (ok I agree not very accurate) around 8.3 (3 runs)

Am just about to fit a Dragon digital, so does anyone know what difference this will make?

The only way you would find out the true BHP is to remove the engine, and have it run on a test bench.

all RRs are to be taken with a pinch of salt... ive seen my (then standard) car get 149bhp on one RR, and ive seen standard cars get just under 130bhp on another RR. (the quoted figures for the engine are actually 128bhp and 229lb/ft)

as for the dragon box, what do they quote? usually +20bhp or so? you may get more, or less.. theres no way to tell :(

i would just assume your car is running the 130ish bhp.

as for the 0-60 test remember your speedo will probably be showing highter mph than you really are going

You can only assume that it is 130 as sold by Skoda. If you get any more then all the better but each and every engine will be different and there are so many other variables such as the fuel, air temp etc.

God, begining to wish id never asked (lol)

Dragon quote increase of 30bhp

Every standard 130pd I've seen run on JBS's rollers have got very close to 130bhp.

Agreed. Mine got 129.6 first time round. If they really were all 145 bhp, the insurers would complain.

But what is more important is whereabouts in the rev range it delivers its peak power, and for how long. Most of the time you're not using anything like 130 bhp.

Compared to my TomTom GPS, the speedo in my vRS is very optimistic (70 mph true = 76 mph indicated), and not systematically so throughout the speed range.

I might be getting the opportunity to try out a PBox digital tuning box soon; will report results if and when I get them.

Is the JBS RR that accurate? how do we know that the Jabba RR is wrong? not wanting to start an arguement, but it may explain an optimistic 191 bhp which Jabba claim I run day to day, if I remember correctly the RR printout prior to the remap was 144 bhp.

I guess this is why some chip makers don't give so optimistic numbers for their products. ABT for example is very conservative with their power increases.. it may not mean they make worse product than others but that they have tested it very accurately. The basic engine is the same for all tuners and if someone claims to make it a lot better than one of the big names I'd take it with a pinch of salt.

What comes to RR accuracy it depends on many things. Esp. if the RR takes into account things like air temperature etc. that can easily make turbo cars give very optimistic results.

btw, I think that the announced 9.6 time is originally for 0-100km/h (I believe they measure speed as km/h in germany) that is actually 0-62mph.. ;)

Various people have stated that the older inertia rollers at Jabba do not read the PD torque profiles very well due to the way the torque is delivered. The newer JBS rollers are apparently much more accurate and able to plot PD torque curves realistically. Put it this way, my car on Jabba rollers = 191bhp. My car on JBS rollers = 169bhp (with Jabba remap) and 173.7bhp (with CC1).

I'd be interested to hear a technical answer to this RR question as it keeps on coming up again and again...

Looking at the figures posted above (again not wishing to start a rollers war!!) -

Hellfire was apparently about 11% over standard pre remap. Post remap @ quoted 191 - 11% = 169.99 which is about what Dave says his was on the JBS rollers with a Jabba map.

No two rolling roads will ever read the same. Plus, atmospheric differences from day to day can lead to different readings.

My old Renault has been on two different rolling roads, one read 150BHP at the flywheel, the other said the same but at the wheels! The first one should have been higher as the car is 150BHP as standard, and it had a custom mapped chip fitted then. For the second one, i'd taken the chip out as it was causing pre-ignition if you pushed really hard, so it should have been lower.

Before we got the VRS we had a Focus ST170 (supposed to be 170BHP) compared with a standard Fabia VRS it's 'brick slow'

Some weeks ago and before the Jabba treatment SWMBO left one for dead and the driver probably contemplating putting an ad in Autotrader! Anyway, my point is the Furby VRS is quick and to put all your minds at ease have alook over here just to see what this lot are complaining about

Lol, just been reading the thread about the new Focus ST being 10 seconds faster round the 'ring than the current Focus RS. The RS owners aren't happy at all... :D

Taken from the FFOC.

"Just like to point out that 10 seconds on a circuit the length of the Nurburgring is absolutely nowt!"

"Hmm, just thinking that in a F1 GP for example, when Shooey wins by 8 seconds the second placed person should say, well it's only 8 seconds over 180 miles. HE STILL LOST THOUGH !"

Gotta say well done to Ford though. That's a pretty good improvement in laptimes, from a 'lower spec' car too...

He owned a Ford - Of course he'd be contemplating an ad in the Trader

badge snobbery?? on a SKODA forum?? get over it

all companies make good cars now and its pretty much down to how much you want to spend and how much you want to pay. some are dearer than others and some a very good value.

my skoda is good and the best car i've had for general driving and also a good price but the focus i had was a much better drive giving much more feel through the car giving me more confidence. it was also a lot more reliable. i owned it for about a year from 99k to about 110k miles and the oly thing to go wrong with it was a coil pack which got done under warrenty my skoda on the other hand has had between 93k and 103k a new turbo, gearbox, coil packs, a few switchs, gone into limp mode a few times(whilst standard), interior light not working, drivers door doesn't register that its openand i now have my ABS/ESP warning lights coming on intermittently. if i could afford it i would have the focus RS

Interesting comments there Bengie - I'm off to have a look at the Focus and new Mondeo tonight as a replacement for my Fabia! :D

Chris

don't get me wrong i love my octavia and really enjoy it but the focus was better to drive, felt a lot more involved with it. and i could do big childish wheel spins :D

my octavia is super quick compared to the focus i had but doesn't seem as exciting. i must admit i love the idea of a 5 cylinder 2.3 turbo focus :D

My mate had an Octy 1.8T Elegance, and he had a Focus before, and he also said the Focus was better to drive.

"They're alright now they've got VW reliability"...

Rob.

i now have my ABS/ESP warning lights coming on intermittently.

Sorry to hijack... have you checked the connections on top of the battery. (There is an additional black box on top of it with a few red wires), mine did theis, once i cleaned & reseated the connector all was OK :)

back to thread :)

K

cheers, i will check this as only a couple weeks ago i rewired my stereo from the battery so maybe i knocked something

gonna go look :)

Personally I think ABT's close relationship with VAG would also have alot to do with this, I would expect they have to do things the VAG way as in to what specifications they test to.

Any standard car may not have 128bhp, 0-62 of 9.6 etc, however it will have at least this upon leaving the factory.

Lucky individuals may get upto 5bhp but with today's manufacturing capabilities I find this a little excessive an estimate.

15bhp extra - no.

An ST170 shouldnt be underestimated even for a remapped vRS owner.

in a 0-100 sprint there is virtually nothing in it (believe me I have tried very hard to get by one) - 2 car lengths at the most to the furby and on cornering you can kiss goodbye to that 2 length lead you have. They stick to the road like Glue!

Private track roundabout near me - vRS (springs/strut brace) max speed 40 mph

ST170 55 mph and still going!
