Fitting DRLs to '08 Octavia

Featured Replies

Hi - new to this forum so if this has been covered before/elsewhere please be patient and redirect me.

I have a '58 Octavia 1.9TDI Eelegance having recently sold my Fabia Estate. I had fitted Daylight Driving Lights to the Fabia and although they were effective they were always a bit of a look of "Heath Robinson" about them and certainly didn't look the way that Škoda would have designed them.

I am looking for (and advice about fitting) some DRL's for the Octavia. The obvious/legal place to fit them is either as part of the removable sections inboard of the headlights or within the (fairly thin) opening below that across the whole car.

So far I have only found either bolt on "any car" type of lights that look as poor as the ones I had on the Fabia. An example here (http://bit.ly/11eKnm4)

Or smart complete replacement sections for the grill which are not cheap. Examples are here (http://bit.ly/11eJjyu) (from Romania I think) or here (http://bit.ly/11eJFVY) (from Taiwan - any comments/info about VAT/Import Duty/Post Office handling fees?) or here (http://amzn.to/11eMAOh)

Any suggestions (of a positive sort) would be most gratefully received even if it's "you've found all the options".

Have you thought of having the dipped headlights set up as DRLs using vcds?

Thanks for the prompt reply. I am showing myself up as a real newbie here - what is vcrds and how could I do this please?

On the elegance spec you can set your fog lights to act as DRL's. completely legal, turn off when you turn lights on.

I'm also sure you can adjust the brightness of them.

Go to the VCDS section of the fourm & find someone in your area with it to have them activated along with other cool stuff

VCDS is a piece of software and a cable that plugs into the 'brain' of your car.

It can be used to change all sorts of weird and wonderful settings on your car.

There are three OEM (genuine) options for your Octavia...

1) Scandinavian mode: Dipped headlights, side lights, rear tail lights and number plate lights. Automatically come on/off when the ignition is on/off.

2) North American mode: Dipped headlights only. Automatically come on when the handbrake is released (with engine running) and off when the handbrake is on.

3) Fog lights that are set to perform the role of DRL's (normal lights off = DRL's on, normal lights on = DRL's off) but at a reduced brightness/intensity.

Only my personal preference but although I like DRL's and appreciate the benefits I'd rather have no DRL's than any type of non-OEM, stuck-on, Halfords specials that look, even to to the untrained eye as a little bit "I'm trying too hard". If you know what I mean?

I'm with silver1011 here - any non-OEM DRL looks rubbish. I'm yet to see something that looks convincing enough aftermarket for any car and as I've said before, theres enough people driving around in things like 15 year old Renault Scenics with strings of 'fairy lights' unevenly super glued to their bumpers to put me off forever!

I wasn't aware of the VCDS options though. I usually shove my sidelights on whilst driving out of habit. Not sure why! Might have a look at the VCDS section and see if I can code them to come on automatically...

Not a fan of non oem drls either but if you were to do it I would try and find a set specific to the octavia as apposed to bolt anywhere. May cost more but there is more chance they will look like they were supposed to be there

I ran lights always on via vcds but switched it off as I didn't always want them on especially in the summer.

As for dimming fogs, you would shorten the life of the bulb and I prefer to have fogs for when I need them although that isn't very often

On the elegance spec you can set your fog lights to act as DRL's. completely legal, turn off when you turn lights on.

Are you talking FL or pre-FL? Because the FL doesn't use the fog lights as DRL, it's a second bulb under the same glass.

Pre FL dude

cheers mike!

I've just managed to find out how to de-activate these non sensical bits of glitzy faddy trendy tat on my vRS, so there's a pair of them specifically designed for the Octavia here if you want them! :sun:

Dunno what I'll do for sidelights mind you.

I thought we discovered Mr Ree in another thread that disabling the LED DRL's on the FL vRS turns off the LED DRL function but they continue to operate as sidelights.

Please tell me you haven't used your own 'non VCDS' method to disable them :giggle:

Look at these beauties!

Yea, they still act as sidelights but the 'permanently on' function has now ceased.

No longer look like a flamin' mobile crimbo tree.

Had to hold the indicator stalk in for three seconds, turn the ignition on and then drop the stalk down to indicate left for another 5.

'Bing' and job's a good 'un.
