HID Aftermaket kit - Help for definitive how to

Anybody else having issues with your HIDs when turning on main beam?

I fitted mine in September and they have been working fine with no issues at all, until about 2-3 weeks ago when we had a spate of wet cold weather.

It started with a flickering of the lights when I selected main beam on, which quickly turned from a flickering to the lights failing and getting a lights warning on the dash.

The only way to recover them was to quickly turn off the main beam and select the lights off  on as quick as is humanly possible when driving at night.

The only way the error code/warning light on the dash would go was if I pulled over and turned the engine off on.

I initially mounted the ballasts on the outer casing of the light but when I started to have the trouble, I noticed an excess build up of condensation inside the lenses.

I pulled the lights off to investigate further and found the wires to be quite wet, I took them indoors over night and dried them all out, I then refitted the ballasts inside the light casings. I sealed up the holes I had made in the rubber grommets with rubber gasket sealant and refitted them to the car.

This seamed to have solved the matter as I had no further trouble for a couple of days. But now the weather has gone cold the problem is back. There is no condensation or ingress of water to affect them any more. But I keep getting the same fault code saying to check the front left side light.

They work just fine until full beam is selected. But I would like to have the option of selecting full beam when needed without having to worry about my lights failing.

I am thinking about biting the bullet and buying another set as all I can think off is the water that got to the wires has damaged the ballasts in some way.

But I want to be sure this is the cause before parting with another £30.

Any thoughts? Anybody had similar issues? The HIDs are the London colour ones that every one is using non canbus.

Holy thread revival but. . . did you ever get this sorted? I have a similar problem when using main beam and get an error message with his or halogens fitted so think it may be an earth problem

The only time I had this issue was before I got the lights coded. I used them for a week or two before disconnecting and waited until I could borrow my mates VCDS. As soon as they were coded properly, no issues what so ever

I had the same issue with main beam producing bulb errors, before mine were coded properly. The wrong bit was ticked first time for a week or so, once I'd had the 'hidden' bit ticked mentioned in this thread the error with main beam was fixed.

Cheers guys

I've had the coding checked a couple of times now and it seems fine but I have been running a 50w hid kit so that could also be part of the problem. However I fried a ballast this last week so will now try replacing the whole lot with a London colour 35w kit and will check the earths when i do so and see if I still have problems

  • 2 weeks later...

Well after reading this thread i decided to take the plunge and bought some 4300k from londoncolour. MY 2102 Coded and fitted, everything tucks away nicely in the headlamp 25 minutes from start to finish and 10 minutes burning the lamps in. Just waiting for it to get dark now.. :D

Non canbus. No errors. Hi beams fine and a big improvement in the dark.

One thing i have just noticed after fitting and coding mine. If you have lights on dip and turn the ignition off ready to exit the vehicle when you open the door you get no sounder to indicate you have left the lights on. Although left in this position upon exit the hids are not illuminated anyway and go off with the ignition. Turn the dial to sidelight position and the bong sounder works as normal. I hadn't noticed this before until i got in the car tonight and the low beam fired up immediately upon start then i realized the wife had left the lights on when she parked up earlier on low beam :notme: .

That's standard, nothing to do with the HIDs.

Well mine did sound before i fitted the hids when the lights were left on that's the point of the sounder isn't it? I understand the hids wouldn't be lit in the lights on position with the key out of the ignition but i should still get the bong to tell me the lights have been left on.

I'll have to check mine but I thought mine sounded with heads or sides

Well I fitted the London Colour 35W HID kit over the weekend to replace a 50W kit I have been using.  Primarily because one of the ballasts in the 50W kit had failed but also in the hope it might resolve the issue I have with error codes coming up when using main beam.  Whilst fitting I also replaced the sidelights again (just in case) and cleaned up the earth straps etc.

The outcome is the London Colour kit works great, as do the sidelights, but I still get an error thrown whenever I use main beam.  From memory (I need to check again) it always seems to be intermittent connection to the reflector motors for dipped beam – as it comes back as:

02499 - Right Dipped Beam Reflector Motor (V295)

012 - Electrical Fault in Circuit - Intermittent

02498 Left Dipped beam reflector Motor (v295)

012 - Electrical Fault in Circuit - Intermittent

I've checked all the bulbs again and the error seems to come back regardless of combination of bulbs whenever I use the main beams.

Coding was originally done for the HIDs by Wardy and has recently been checked and again a couple of months ago and various combinations tried with no change to behaviour.

I can live with it but with the dark nights drawing in I'd like to get it fixed, otherwise I'll be cancelling error codes every weekend.

Could be a BCM issue or is it that the car thinks I’ve got Xenons with shutters, regardless of this not being selected?

Any thoughts as to whether it would be worthwhile pulling the connections to the BCM and remaking them?

Or any other suggestions of what to check? - stalk fault maybe? fuses?

Just out of diagnostic interest, what happens if you put halogens back in to the dipped beam? Having the HIDs could just be a red herring.

Tried that - same issue and same fault codes (albeit coding not changed to suit as I didn't have VCDS available).

I wonder if you have a bad neg earth on the high beam? Not sure if all the components of the headlight cluster share a earth , I'm sure someone here will know! It might be worth running a second earth temporarily to see if it still does it.

Checked when I got home and I get a noise for both sides or heads

Hmmm certainly the high beam bulb is a single connection and the earth is via a lead onto the clip that holds in the bulb but not sure where it goes from there

May well be FL only or mines faulty.

Do you have the coming/leaving home function turned on?

If so then you don't get the lights-on warning if the switch is left in the dipped headlights position.

No. I would like that feature but don't have the sensor so that option hasn't been selected.

I have used London Color 35w 4300k kit and had to remove it due to an unrelated BCM issue. Using 35w 5k Hylux canbus kit now (I know, I know..but it was the only kit i could get my hands on) since January without any problem.

The 5K doesnt seem to work for me. While the color is spot on where I'd like it to be, it is not doing justice to visibility. I would like to go back to the 4300k kit, but the bulbs and ballasts are cut up and separated. Ive used the kit even after the BCM damage and it lights up without any errors.

My question to you lighting experts- Can I splice the NON-Canbus 4300k BULBS onto the CANBUS ballasts and use it?

Edited by mmafreak

Just fitted the London Colour HID H7 5000 (Non Canbus) to my 2008 Octy II VRS .Had them VCDS Coded (enabled Xenons with Shutters Fitted) and lights work fine. The lightbulb error popped up on the dash today so got the fault cleared (My EXTREMELY helpful independant specialist is just round the corner) . Whilst out tonight the lightbulb error came on again, just after I had put the main beam on (dont know if this is relevant) . Does anyone know if there is anything else that needs coding in VCDS ?

Shouldn't that be xenons without shutters?

Will check on Monday when I can get car in again

....think that was the only option avail on the screen...

Xenons with Shutters Fitted gave bulb errors in mine. Look earlier in this thread for the 'Hidden bit' which is manually coded. This has sorted mine.

Can I splice the NON-Canbus 4300k BULBS onto the CANBUS ballasts and use it?

Anyone?
