So much for the revised engine curing oil usage!

Not good at all - this seams like such a widespread problem affecting many owners yet VAG still use/sell these engines, i would of thought they would have fixed the issue by now.

mstafford1986,

just to be sure, are you certain it is fitted with the 'CTHE' engine, is it on the VIN and showing that code on the V5?

Certainly not good if the later version of the engine is going to go the way the 'CAVE' engine

from 2010 to late 2012 did.

Well thats obvious, my point was more how can two engines designed and built by that same people vary so greatly??

Because the 1.2 is a simpler and less stressed turbo engine,

not one fitted with a Supercharger & Turbocharger.

eg,

Even the 1390cc Twinchargers putting out 120-144 bhp do not appear to have the same problems as the 178bhp engine in the Fabia/Golf/Ibiza/A1.

&

the Bigger Capacity engines seem to be fine.

Exactly.

The twin charged engine is overstressed IMO for a stock engine.

Have a look at Sy's Fabia project thread in the Fabia Project Section for an idea how hard they work as stock and how much work is needed to get more out of them.

Hey George

Yeah did a check on the black plate on the door and it does say CTHE on it. I'd be happy for skoda just to pay for oil than go through all that testing/ eventual engine change lol....sad when u know what coming

Just curious to how the car is driven on a daily basis? Did you run it in yourself?

Hope it gets sorted, I can sympathise with you as I've just been through the whole process and it's a nightmare.

Ben.

if i remember right, your car had the suspension clunk as well did it not.

I would throw it back at them, not that big a hassle for them to replace since its a lease car.

Skoda is going to have to get to the bottom of their quality control rather quickly if the CTHE is no better than the CAVE.

(did you change your springs and would need to get them back off?)

Yes mine did have Tue cluck and still does when it's cold :-s so have a list of problems for them when I go in this morning. Will let everybody know what has been said when I get out

Judging by this forum there has certainly been less CTHE engines with problems. Clearly there is still something amiss though

re the CTHE engine.

If its only 7 months since its release, we are going to start to find out how many among the members here have problems.

The CTHE engine in this post has done 3540 miles.

That is about the same mileage as the first UK Demonstrators 'CAVE' engines failed or were seen to have High Oil usage, after the release in August 2010.

Some of these Demonstrators went on to be Rejected once sold to Private Buyers.

& New Bought cars also had High Oil usage and were rejected or Repaired without being Rejected.

(Many, if not all that had Rebuilt Engines have gone on to have no Problems.)

?? How many miles have others with CTHE engines done already.?

Hey Ben

Car is driven mostly in d and long drives as I am based on the road and have driven in all modes but normally quite easy

Sorry to hear the bad news :(

Out of curiosity, what are the physical differences between the CAVE and CTHE engines?

Reminiscent of K-series and head gasket munching in higher states of tune...not suggesting any link, just interesting.

Look how bad a press they got - K-series are pretty good units IMHO, but get one that hasn't been looked after and you would always worry if it was about to go pop.

In a few years, will the twincharger have a similar legacy...?

That is the Twincharger story right now.

2009-2012 CAVE Twincharger engine.

Many good and some bad, some got engine rebuilds and some replacements.

CTHE engine installed late 2012 in 2013 models.

You would expect that in 4 years of Production that Engine builders as big as VAG could find a solution to snagging problems.

Right spoke skoda this morning and the car is going in for 1 week from Monday 29th to have a oil usage report done

George - a cynic might say, why would they?

I faced a major delay on my Twincharge Superb, in the end (as I was under a time restriction to get the new car) I got a Greenline as a similar replacement. I now wonder if this was a blessing - the engine was in such high demand, that the order book on the Skodas was being nudged back build dates, to satisfy demand in the Flagship VAG products.

My point - they must have churned out millions (?) of 1.4 TSIs and how many are actually dodgy?

A bit like BMW and nikasil (sp) cylinder lining. Deny it is a widespread issue, eventually selectively replace/repair and you maintain a certain credibility.

Open the floodgates with a recall (assuming there is a definite cause and solution) and you pretty soon face an Alfa-esque scandal, with cars rusting on your drive (really...?). Cue massive loss of face, profit atc.

I do not think there are Millions of 1.4 TSi SA 178 bhp with DSG Gearboxes produced.

Only several thousands showing for each car model in the UK in Ibiza, Fabia, Polo & A1.

Certainly lots of Faulty ones around UK/Europe & Australia.

Its going to be interesting to know how the percentage does show on how many are having engines replaced.

Skoda/VAG only started acting a bit quicker in the Summer of 2012 to get Engines fixed after the Breather Mod failed to resolve problems.

Up till then there was little acceptance from Dealers of any widespread problems.

Owners got the run a round.

Then they started getting cars in quick and installing new or reconditioned engines.

Then the CTHE engine went into the new Y2013 cars.

Hmm it's interesting.

There is a lot of dispute in to how to use this engine in terms of preventing problems.

I myself have recently had a new engine fitted due to the oil issue (using 1 litre every 300 miles) and was told 'don't baby the engine, use the performance and rev range' which has correlation on here with people who have done the same and had no issues.

Again, there is no conclusive evidence.

Hope you get it sorted mate.

Ben.
