Blanking off my EGR Valve...

Featured Replies

Hey peeps,

The car: Octavia vRS 2.0 PD170 Diesel 2007 : My new baby

Having read numerous posts about lumpy idleness, sluggish hesitation at different times and the noticeable 'pull back' feeling when taking off sometimes, I have chosen to blank off my EGR Valve, and will eventually move on to a full EGR Remove & DPF Remove with a remap to ignore both from the ECU (likely Shark Performance)...

I, like everybody else, have these symptoms at 83k miles.

However...

Before I go and spend more money on a blanking plate with a 8mm hole in it (to prevent the EML light)... If I use a full blanking plate, and the light comes on, will this put my ECU into limp mode?, or will it only popup a light?

I owned an Astra mk4 diesel prior to this car, and when blanking the EGR completely without a remap, it went into limp mode until I put a 8mm hole in it.

Anybody done this with theirs?, is it running alright?

Thanks guys,

James

Interested to know this also.

I'm pretty sure it just carries on as normal and not in limp mode.

The reason the light comes on is that it expects a certain air flow through the MAF with the EGR open. When air can't be pulled back through the EGR more is drawn through the MAF so it just confuses it but will carry on regardless.

Just the answer I was looking for Phil.  Thankyou!

I'll get it fitted tonight, and do a couple of runs to work and back before posting my progress on A) Limp Mode effect  & B ) The sluggy idleness/hesitation symptoms.

Thanks

I drove round with an EGR delete for a week before Shark altered the map, no problems at all and no limp mode.

Any update on this James?

I have put about 80,000kms on my PD140 after an EGR delete and I have not had it mapped out...............no problems.

Sorry about the delay, i've had some interesting air con related challenges to complete.

Ok, well... it's been blanked off for nearly 3 weeks now and not had any issues.  No lights or limp mode.

The change of gear is noticeably smoother, and appears to be much better coming on and off the clutch.  When warming up however, there are still some hesitation issues occurring when my foot is lightly pressed on the accelerator, causing me the think it's now related to the DPF doing a regeneration, or just being a pain in the ar$e altogether.

Was it worth doing?, yes i'd 100% say so.

Next on the agenda for me is the DPF removal and a remap (including a full delete of the EGR).

Just get it mapped out. No error codes, no 8mm hole and nothing to worry about.

Except your now very slow warm up times.

I've just ordered a delete kit from darkside developments, will keep you posted on how it works out :-)

yeah let me know Rob.

The idea now is a complete delete and remap with DPF removal aswell.  Would be worth knowing how you get on.

thanks.

Fitted mine today, blanking plate fitted at the turbo (back left of engine, a bit of a pig to gt to but ill pop some pics up later to guide.

Bypass pipe was a doddle, but recommend removing the 12mm nut that holds the egr pipe in place so its out of the way.

EML light is now on but drives so much smoother.

Gonna look at getting it mapped next month at darkside to stage 1 and remove egr.

As I said, will bosh some pics up soo .

The EGR is to reduce emissions of Nitrous Oxide. Nitrous Oxide causes smog and also causes Cancer. By blanking your EGR you are contributing more than other more responsible drivers to the biggest cause of respiratory disease and cancer in people and our children for the sake of going a little faster and keeping your engine clean.

Just saying!

A light, no limp mode. All a-okay. Even coded it out with a standard OBD-II bluetooth adaptor from my windows phone :)

Apparently blanking the EGR doesn't do much for CR engines anyway, so I'm just leaving mine out.

Cheers for that, however I still believe that my little 2.0 tdi with its smokey map and no egr or DPF is less poluting than say a diesel train, or a airbus a380, or anything with a bigger engine driven by a tool.

I blanked my egr to keep engine clean, not go faster. if anything it now takes the car ages to warm up so its a pain during winter.

my little VRS is a small fish a big pond my friend but I get what you are saying.
