I'd rather they drove it a couple of hundred miles and found every single problem there might be before handing it over.  I might not have had to keep going to to get them resolved, then!!   Rachel

  • Not sharp just blunt! You need to look at the bigger picture thats all. In a few weeks it will have a few stone chips in the bonnet a ding in the door from an inconsiderate ape in the supermarket and

I had one with about 15 once and didn't bat an eyelid TBH

Delivery mileage can vary.  My own new car had 11 miles on it. It doesn't take much to get 15 or more miles on it during prep and whatever. On a new car from the showroom it can be 2 or 3 miles or 20 or more. It depends on many factors. The car may need to be moved for reasons of preparation if a customer has asked for it to have a special treatment of some kind if it's isn't being carried out a the dealership. Cars have to be fuelled up too. Or the car could be driven for other reasons such as mechanical or electronic checking. Sometimes during pdi a potential problem necessitates the need to drive it. You should not be concerned at this it's completely normal. Why would you want to cause a 'stink' about it?

I'd be a little put off that i'd spent a fair amount of money on a new car and then receive it with 20/30 miles on the clock! i expect 5/6 for moving around etc i'd at least expect a justified reason for high mileage.

What answer are you looking for?

Something less than 13, I presume?

Anything under 20 I would consider acceptable.

They are sually between 5 and 15 in my experience, they do need to test it, get it to a train, get it to a lorry, move it around a few times possibly at the dealer and even pop down to the local petrol station sometimes.

My Rapid had 13 on the clock and that was fine by me.

I really can't understand the problem with a delivery car having 13 miles on the clock.  What were you expecting?

For the average driver in the UK that's less than half a day's driving!

Mine had 15, which was fine with me.

Is there anything, anywhere, which states the maximum amount of miles for delivery? i though i read it a few years back after getting my octavia which made me wish i had gone back to them about it.

Because it had 13 miles on it?

For real? :wonder:

I've never seen anything like that personally, but happy hunting :)

We went on a cruise last year from Southampton, I sat on our balcony taking in the sunshine until we set sail. At the other side of the dock they were taking Minis out of a multi story and transferring them onto a large transporter ship, it was like watching the Italian Job!!

Cold start, max revs, screeching round the corners, it was a good spectator sport......not sure if it was a rush job or the norm

I wonder how Skodas are treated on the docks.

5/10/15/20 or 45, I think how it's been driven is more important than how far it's been driven......and you will never know

Rolling road test in the factory is normally a couple of miles IIRC - and it could have also been driven to/from a holding area in the plant/dock etc.  As Estate Man says, some cars might have an extra test (random check/corrective work etc).  Anything under 30 is nothing to worry about IMHO.

I've seen cars advertised with "Delivery miles only" with almost 100 miles on the clock which might be stretching it a little - but what if its one that has been delivered on the road (i.e. between 2 dealers in the same group and no transporter available) on trade plates?  It's still delivery miles..

i have also heard these stories of cars being mis treated before delivery by handling staff and diffrent points in its journey!

I'd rather they drove it a couple of hundred miles and found every single problem there might be before handing it over.  I might not have had to keep going to to get them resolved, then!!

I believe the odometer can be reset a couple of times if under 100km.

I'm guessing from the replies that delivery mileage dosent have a maximum limit 30 miles on the clock from factory to me ( not from another dealer/sat at a dealership for a while) would be to much for me! i'd want to know why its got so many miles on it.

if this is the case then this is a little naughty! it could be driven by the dealership every day and just re set before the 100km mark....hope this isnt true!

If they could do that, you'd think all the "new" cars would come with 1 mile on the clock...

I know the poster is in Austrailia, unlikely in UK IMO.

We seem to just be looking for things to worry/complain about.

Who gives a f**k really its a new car? Like someone said earlier i would sooner they drive the thing around for a bit if it ensures that when i get it its perfect. In the grand scheme of things if your expecting to do 100k miles then 13 isn't even 0.1%. An even better analagy is a washing machine it comes with water in it thats because they do a couple of full spin cycles prior to despatch imagine how many revolutions that drum has made before you take ownership. Do you let that bother you as well?, Just enjoy your car pal stop worrying about things that don't matter. We only have a limited number of years of life on this planet you have just wasted a greater percentage of time than the percentage of life they took out of your motor by moving it about a bit. (For a bit of perspective)

From...

Factory-transporter-dock-ship-dock-transporter-dealer-prep.

All of the above will add some mileage so as long as it's nothing to ridiuclous I wouldn't worry too much.

As already mentioned, if you could see how some of them are driven from the factory and onto/off the ships then you might even consider cancelilng your order!

The engine gets run in on a bench so it's done more than delivery miles anyway. Just get on with it.

My first new car, an Octavia had 42 miles on the clock when I took delivery.  But it was me that put 30 or so miles on it!  It was showroom stock that I test drove on trade plates before buying it.  But if I had decided not to buy...

Current car was made to order and had 7 miles on the clock.

So I guess that if you buy to order, single digit miles would be the norm with anything up to 15 or 20 not being unusual.  I certainly wouldn't balk at 13 miles.  But buying one from stock it could be anything!  Especially if it has been shunted from dealer to dealer a few times and been taken on a test drive or 2.

But after nearly 2 months I have 2000 miles on the clock so single digit, double digit, even triple digit mileages are a distant fleeting memory.

How many people have seen the inside of a car plant then?

Car comes to the end of the track, engine turned over until it fires (sometimes with some heavy use of throttle, then straight onto a rolling road test where its driven to get it up to (water) temp as quick as possible (in some cases, the next thing that happens is a kickdown test if an auto....) to do the necessary checks like speedo, ABS etc.

Worry not...if you were to be concerned how its been treated before you got it, you would probably reject every car that came out of the factory gates..

Your car might do 150000 miles in it's life. The first 15 having happened before you got it wouldn't give me any concern.

What exactly do you think you are entitled to, just because it's made a very short journey without you at the wheel?
