New vRS,.. sorry to say not impressed.

Featured Replies

so bored of people trying to compare the mk3, to bmw's and volvos and all sorts of other crap!

the reasons people buy a VRS octy is because....

1) its quick enought for most people

2)it doesnt cost a bomb "for the size and quailty"

3)its bloody useful in both estate and hatch form

4) and its not a mundain bmw or audi or golf or anything else that makes you want to jump of a bridge everytime some mentions they have bought one to make them sound important !

who cares if its got some annoying features or differences compared to the mk2 or another car

it has enought in the design to differ it from the rest. without being shouty and in your face!

and thats why people love this car !

I've had a good look around the new Vrs, cheap looking and those awful exhaust trims. looks like they ran out of money when it came to the rear.   Not for me, the FL MKII is just my cup of tea.  Tim

Sadly if you go over the thread again quite a few posts have countered the majority of the points you make..but hey lets pick up on them anyway as I'm bored tonight....stick with me if you can..

1/ not disputed a mile muncher good enough for most.

2/ price...err yes..for what is on offer at full list price, the general concensus is,, its overpriced.

3/ bloody usefull,,..so are most hatches and estates and a luton van if you work for pickfords

4/ not sure if we are looking at the same car here yoiu do mean the vRS don't you,..you know.. the one that looks like a eurobox passat A4 blandmobile?

In terms of the other points you make again the general concensus is that its not a huge step in the right direction from the mk2 for a number of reasons again posted in the thread, though overall it is probably a very nice car, sadly it has moved anyway from the very thing the original vRS and subsequent mk2 stood for. looks and VFM being two aspects.

I'm interested in the Volvo because, despite being a very important person in my wifes and sons eyes, I actually love the design, which stands out over the other models in a way the vRS should have against the rest of the range.

The Volvo also works out a little cheaper on the monthly lease as well..

I'll end there as you've probably galzed over now... ;)

For me it looks much more striking and aggressive than the Golf GTI, especially at the front.

It does look good in the white, I was put onto the GTD Golf today as there are some deals to be had but the vRS beats it for looks and size hands down, just to compare image below of the V40.

Gtd getting reduced much?

I really like the look of these Volvos gone are the days of the Volvo boxes, although I've always really wanted a V70R

Bottom line is just like car colours, it is each to their own, very bland place if we all liked the same shape and colour.

I actually bought a late model MK2 FL,on purpose as opposed to the MK3, it just does not do it for me in so many ways, enjoy them for what they are :)

Same happened many years ago with my XR2 they changed the shape in 1985 and I hated the new over the old but things move on, its evolutionary.

Enjoy your Volvo.

I do quite like volvos

Re the gtd I took one out to have a go before buying the vrs. The dealer was talking about £450 per month bearing in mind there's no 0 percent. I'm sure that could be haggled slightly but I've swapped to the new vrs with dsg for £370 pm whereas I was paying £360 pm with the fl vrs manual with less kit

Not sure Kenny I've been offered £50 a month off over two years on a lease awaiting the final monthly cost.

Lol, yep, it looks tso ugly in the image, in some perverse way the ugliness makes it look good...  :)

But it's smaller than the VRS?

Maybe it's just me but in white it looks a lot better and more sporty than it does in the blue.

Have to say personally I don't like the look of the volvo.

I also think I'm going to have to re test drive the octavia mk3, I think the dealer I went to set me off on a slightly negative side.

Still stick with my not as good value as Skoda usually is.

Isn't it a tad inconsistent to complain about the inflated cost of a mk3 vrs, compared to a mk2, and then suggest you'll buy a Swedish Ford Focus at £6,000 more than the oval badged version?

Looks like the new focus with a Volvo grill to me.

The Octy 3 is every bit as classy inside as any BMW I have sat in, the Octy 2 was more on par with Ford, the Rapid with Proton or Kia.

I am sorry, but that's just ridiculous. It must have been very old BMW. Credit where it's due, but O3 interior (certainly current vRS/Elegance trims) don't even stand up to it's own group. Not to Golf, barely to Seat. Definitely not to Audi. The truth is, even in VAG terms, Skoda got the oldest parts bin and a rouge deal, and respectfully - as much as Skoda plays its terrible hand of cards with brave face, the cost cutting is visible in all the wrong places. It's nuts. You can go fully maxed out with every option they have on O3 and end up on the wrong side of audi price tags and still end up with dodgy plastics everywhere, not get proper, real leather through and through and discover that you can end up with better luxury in now identically priced Superb. I'm sorry, but that's just true. The price point is absolutely barking mad.

You guys need to remember that most of Europe never got that VAT free deal you have. I actually don't think any other country did for that matter (I'm not sure though). I can understand that someone coming from a freshly bought Blackline with that deal will raise an eyebrow to the new prices, but for everybody else there's not that much in it really.

What you have to remember that this is hermetically closed market. The cars do not go anywhere outside of this island. We don't trade second hand cars with Ireland on any noticeable scale. We don't sell used cars to Cyprus. We never export them to Australia. And none of our used cars would pass shakken to enter Japan. It's a sealed market. The same way prices in Norway are insanely high, the prices in UK are dictated by the internal rules. And the first rule is that cars in UK have no second hand value. Residuals practically do not exist. Most mid range £20-30k cars will drop 2/3rd in value across 3 years. It's not unheard of for a mid range large car to be worth about £500 by the time it's 10 years old. And that's if it doesn't exceed certain mileage. A typical, round the mill, eurobox car with over 100k on the clock is hard to sell. Car with over 150k on the clock you would practically have to give away. But most of all, it's the competition.

If it wasn't for the PCP "renters" and the "mid point opt out clause" finances based on ancient agricultural law, you couldn't sell a TSI for £22-24k to long term/cash buyers because they can call brokers and get:

- Seat Leon FR 1.8T for £17k

- Audi A5 Sportback 1.8T for £21k

- Audi A4 Avant 1.8T FSI S Line is £22k

- Scirocco 2.0 TSI 210 R Line is £23k

- Golf 2.0 TSI GTI is £23.5k

And most of those cars will be worth more after 3 years than even most optimistic value put on Octy 3. Nobody is going to pay more and lose more money in next few years just to drive specifically Skoda. Whether you want more oompf, more luxury or just bang for buck, there are simply better options in VAG catalogue alone.

But most of all, it's all because O2FL vRS for £15-16k for the past three years. They called it VAT free, but it wasn't. It was just a name. Perpetual offer. Those prices never shifted back. Not for about 5-6 years now under different names. And considering market options that's the only price point for vRS to be. £16k tops. L&K at £19k. New tech, or not. Doesn't matter. Other VAG cars right now, already have newer tech. Seat Leon ST revealed in Frankfurt today. Close enough to O3 space. 1.8TSI @180hp available. 2.0 TDI @184 HP available. 4x4 DSG available. Lighter. Press indicates diesel does 0-60 in 7.5 seconds. No torsion beam at the back. All O3 toys plus new VW toys. DCC Adaptive Chassis Control with variable damper adjustment. Price it up en par with O3 and it's game over. Because why would you?

Beefy; don't forget all the brand loyalty on here who can't possibly here a negative review of their beloved.

Fair play to you for raising your opinion on a forum where there is lots of love for the MkIII VRS.

You're right, that's exactly what it is. There are absolutely no positives with the mk3; to a man, we're all blind, indoctrinated zealots.

For one, I reeeeally dislike the new door cards. I think they're dull, lack design and of unnecessarily hard plastic (especially since you touch it all the time with your hands).

Happy now? :)

PS: I love my wife and kid, I merely like my car(s).

PPS: I have one on order.

Interesting thread! I agree that PCP deals and what the car costs per month plays a massive part in the decision process. This is why Skoda are selling like hot cakes with the 0% deal as car part exchange prices are very poor in general and the small amount of equity is enough to move on to the next car. The 0% may offer the chance to have more equity as no interest is added in three years time. Who knows?

Try buying the above on PCP and most of the deals quoted to me were 5k deposit instead of £2k. For me, only the A4 was an option to have fun and carry the family and 3 large dogs around at the weekend to the beach. A4 felt smaller and it's the old model compared to the A6. A6 was very nice but still preferred the Octavia. Odd.

I am over paying my mortgage rather than using extra cash for the deposit or higher monthly repayments. This will help in the longer term way more than buying a car for cash. This is my own financial position. Everyone has different reasons. I must say out of the above as I tested most of the tdi versions , the new vRS is a great package with 0%!

we get your point but you are not right on some areas and others have different opinions. do you want us to follow you and only drive what you decide we can?

cars are not all bought on ££ deals etc, believe it or not some of us consider other things.

having been in an o3 vrs i see a nice interior and better than the o2 vrs imho, you and others may disagree but thats my point, its my opinion

whoever is paying for the car makes that call, we all get you dont like it and no idea what you drive or will be buying next but hope you find something that ticks all your boxes.

ive looked at most cars in the vag range and octy still works out the lowest monthly figure (not counting seat as i dont like it)
