I've had a good look around the new Vrs, cheap looking and those awful exhaust trims. looks like they ran out of money when it came to the rear.   Not for me, the FL MKII is just my cup of tea.  Tim

Everyone please note the use of the phrase "I've heard", That means you have not actually tried seen or tested the seating in the Mk3 then. You are basing your remark on rumour & conjecture.   :mmm:

If it makes you any happier, I have seen them in person and thought the fabric centre sections felt like really cheap and nasty work trousers.

Have to agree I prefer the alacantra (or whatever its called) fabric of the elegance.

I'm obviously not that sensitive to materials, but I honestly didn't even give the seat material quality a second thought. Seemed fine to me.

Perfectly fine to me too, I don't like leather seats as in hot weather they have a nasty tendency to burn your **** off when you get back in, if you leave the car in a sunny spot for any length of time!  :(

Screw the car, that dog is the scene stealer here.

He's brilliant and the pic with the beer and the hat

has really made my (otherwise very traumatic) day.

He should have his own tv show.

The cloth is similar to the STi seats I had in my Forester.

There was nothing to worry about wear wise on them, except, it was easy to pull threads with zippy jeans etc (not as bad as I'm making it sound though).

Ha lol, Iv heard enough to know its not lies.

Anyway wouldn't put me off too much! I just think the mkll seats stand out more that's all.

We'd have a mk3 in a heart beat, and I did promise SWMBOs a VRS.

The only reason for not is the need for something with 7 seats.

Here's an interesting analysis, what about comparing a remapped mk2 with an updated RARB to the mk3 vrs? Would you still get the same answer?

I'm in the same camp that the improvements in the mk3 are not sufficiently competitive, I think there are more exciting cars at the same price point (though of course this is a highly subjective opinion). As an example, if build / trim quality is the important yardstick then surely the Golf GTI makes more sense?

"Draw me like one of your French girls"

Back to the V40. We have one as a company car and have had a few issues with it. Compared to an Octy it is much smaller and the boot opening is poor. Have just been on the Volvo website and the pricing for the r design is just a joke imho with the cost of the extras.

I personally went for the Seat Leon FR with the 184BHP diesel. Fully specced up including sunroof/sound pack, etc for a lot less than the Volvo and the Octy. The Octy has space on its side. The Volvo at the price on the website has nothing going for it.

But from what I can see on the Seat configurator, no option of a 2.0 200bhp+ petrol engine - so something else the Octy has over it.

No but the guy I thought was looking at a diesel. Same for me as a company car. The Leon Cupra will be the petrol one next year for the petrol heads. Much prefer petrol to diesel myself but with a company car it ain't really an option.

The price of the R Design D4 Hatch is £24 020 otr against $24 060 otr for the estate vRS CR (the hatch obviously not available)  The specs are not far apart as standard cars.  The theatre lighting which is adjustable and the illuminated gearknob are the butt.. sorry... deal clincher for me ;)

Just had a really good look round the new model and have to say the new interior is probably the weakest point (slightly ambitious price hikes aside) over the previous generation. Those seats are terrible - super soft, lacking in support and do seem to be made of the thinnest, cheapest material and filled with H&lfords value sponges. It will be interesting to find out how they wear. Some of the bits that are supposed to be leather are very, very thin and plasticky looking - it's as if VW HQ demanded a few flaws to be built in so as not to steal sales from the new Golf?

Did like the steering wheel, main controls all felt good to prod and the solidity overall was fine (other than the seats) but there's no way it looks better inside than the MkII with its contrasting grey/black mesh. Hoping to go back to the garage for a test drive, maybe all forgiven as the £££s have been spent on the good stuff underneath.

The exhaust tail pipes are a bit cheesey though. Why bother with the angular trim only to have the round tailpipes sitting halfin / halfout them - just a tad nasty there Skoda, please fix for next model revision.

Good summary bobby_vimto

Have to disagree with the reference to the grey/black mesh seats in the Mark II - with a young family these were a massive negative for me and so I was delighted to pick up a Blackline with the *cough* leather seats.  The standard seats stopped me from buying a VRS earlier!

Re comments about exhaust tail pipes, I know a lot of people are complaining about this but if the exhaust was very unique to the VRS would this not mean extremely high prices if you needed to change the exhaust?  (Am just trying to keep the cost of motoring as cheap as possible)

Cheers.

Greatdane I absolutely love your mutt, he is awesome

There is no doubting the MK3 is overall a better car than the MK2, I think the struggle for most was that the MK2, particularly towards the end with the VAT deal and the launch of the Blackline represented exceedingly good value for money. As a car its certainly a bit quicker and better appointed than the MK6 Golf it replaced but Im not sure id necessarily describe the Octavia as a better car; I however could forgive it any of its shortcommings given it has essentially provided me with a very roomy Golf GTD alternative for only 20k.

Id like a new one but like most honest people here I still see Skoda as a VAG value for money brand and as such am only prepared to spend so much on an Octavia vRS. If my dealer can strike a similar deal for me in the comming months great otherwise ill almost certainly buy something else when the time comes. That said the Blackline is so competent im not sure ill want to change it for some time.

I'm not convinced it's a better car, why? Apart from an extra 20bhp or so what else do you get for your money? The Skoda brand is becoming less VFM orientated as the customer base realises what the product is, it's going to be marketed as the luxury utilitarian vw alternative. There is a reason why there is not a golf gti estate, let alone an A3 version. Seat is always going to try and beat alfa as the sexy latino, and hasn't a hope in hell as long as the tsi sounds as lame as it does in stock condition, but might just become the sort of Q car bargain if they launch the new Leon cupra with the same S3 running gear. Upgrade your suspension and you're almost there, a remap and noone would ever know. Let face it, there is very little that is stylish or emotionally captivating in anything in the VAG product offering right now, it's mostly about fuel efficiency and consistency.

Edited by Dodgy

Dodgy, you make a good case that is a lot of features.

But I'm not sure it's £8000 of extra in my case (with same options added to give same spec).

I like the mk3, and the look now I've seen a few has grown on me, but I don't think at the moment it's in my price range.

I have to agree, that it is the interior of the new mk3 Octavia that causes concerns. Somehow the MK2 FL (which I happen to own (L&K)) feels much better. The main issues are the steeringwheel and the dashboard. The new Superb would also be good if it wasn't for the new steeringwheel. The seat fabric is not so good either. The interior door handles also feel a bit cheap, while the top of the door panels otherwise are ok.

I have to agree with the consensus that Skoda should really take a look at the Volvo interiors. The mk3 is a step backward. All the new tech like, lane assistant, crash-protection, new engines are a step in the right direction. I really hope that we see a facelift in next 2 years that addresses the interiors.

As for the driveline. Where are the RS engine setups paired with 4-wheel drive?

As for the Superb, when will Skoda replace the 170hp TDI engine with the new 184hp TDI, and the 200HP with the new 220HP TSI? 4WD + start-and-stop option for the petrol variants too, not just the diesel. In urban traffic you get the biggest savings on CO2 with the more powerful petrol engines.

So glad I bought a blackline as I got most of these extras for "free".

Let's not forget that the new model is on the new vag multi-use platform, so lower production costs, should the new model price not be cheaper then?

Lower manufacturing costs plus hefty price increase equals big profits for skoda.

Hopefully big discounts return in a few years time otherwise I'm off to Kia or the likes, much better value for money.
