Shell VPOwer fuel

Featured Replies

Thought I'd try Shell VPower, which to be fair they don't actually claim will give you more mpg, but if it doesn't then what's the point? Especially as it costs about 4p more per litre. So far after a few fill-ups, the on-board computer is showing that I'm getting about 2-3 mpg less than when I used any old diesel. Wondering what other Skoda drivers are finding.

And here's another funny thing - I had always assumed that the on-board computer was giving me an accurate measure of my mpg, but when I actually work it out from my own calculations based on fuel in and miles driven, I find I'm really doing about 5 mpg less. Anyone else found this?

Yup got less too. Same as BP ultimate

Funnily enough, I check mine and IT DOES read exactly right.

Must be something to do with this place where I get my fuel! :wonder:

I put the regular shell in mine plus Millars. MPG is better - 50.11 brim to brim on the last visit

Is it just me or does MPG figures bore anyone else?

I can understand the reasoning buying premium petrol's for the good of the engine but to just o increase mpg just seems a bit tedious.

My opinion of course.

I just assumed the OP in this thread was talking about Diesel V Power & in this case at 4-10 pence more over readily available regular diesel.

re

Super Unleaded, & the Extra Cost. For many engines it can be the recommended Octane, & there are improvements over the Minimum acceptable.

it might well improve or assist the engines performance by running at its optimum,

and if when driving like for like trips gain you the extra MPG that means the extra £2.50-£3.00 or what ever per tank

was covered by the extra miles you got.

Why does anyone that finds Fuel & Premium Fuel or MPG posts tedious but opens, reads and then post in those threads?

Or just the though of any attempt at money saving as being Tedious

IMHO tedious posts. Each to their own though.

I found exactly the same when I experimented with Vpower last year for 2000 miles.....2-3 mpg less. Vpower diesel is slightly less dense than standard diesel, so the energy/litre content is slightly less than normal diesel....hence the MPG reduction.

As for your trip computer over reading, mine did this too.....it over read by 6.5%. I have corrected it with VCDS and it is now accurate to within 1%.

No..........because by keeping an eye on it and knowing what causes my fuel economy to get bad, allows me to avoid these situations and maximise my economy. Which means I can spend less time standing on a garage forecourt, pumping fuel into my car......a pastime I find even more boring.....and at £70 a tank.....slightly alarming.

My trip computer shows me as an average of 29/30mpg. when i work it out on the mpg app on my phone its 28mpg. However i cant be accurate of exactly how much ive used.

Either way, i bought my VRS for the MPH not the MPG

My opinion of course.

Given they claim better performance AND MPG, then MPG IS relevant

I buy the premium petrol for its quality, not because it improves mpg. I can understand people that care about mpg when they have a diesel, but just can't understand it when they have a petrol.

All a matter of opinions.

At the OP, the "more refined" "premium diesels" actually have a lower specific energy, but burn more completely. They reduce your PC10s but do nothing else for engine performance. Save your money.

I wish i could ignore MPG but my life pretty much revolves around it, with me covering about 25,000 miles a year it matters.

All the premium fuels are just a fad if you ask me but i do think there is variation in different brands of fuel, my cars always go further on Shell, from my experience Tesco is the worst

It's all about the smiles per gallon :) I managed to average 11mpg in my mk1 fabia vrs. That was at Santa pod though :)

Sorry to bore you, Sippo. I thought the purpose of the forum was to get other people's useful opinions and tips; if you feel unable to do that I'd suggest you keep shut.

Bit harsh  Everyone is entitled to an opinion.

If your worried about Mpg, by a little diesel or a citiGo.

I have a 200bhp DSG Vrs and I don't really give a hoot to what it does to the gallon and I run it on 98 Ron fuel

It's Smiles per mile I'm after

It's only a couple of quid extra for a tank of the good stuff. Have one less pint a week and that cover's it

Just my opinion

You might have another type of vRS with 180-200 ps (or any engine that is designed to perform best at a certain Octane/cetane)

& you use the good stuff and are happy to put in 45 litres of good stuff for £64 & be fine with 225 miles out of that tank

while having fun.

It is nice to know that you are having a weekend away or daily driving and that £64 might take you 450 miles if you want to drive easy.

So spend £64 Rather than the £128.

It means more money for the getting the beers in that weekend.

Using the right Octane, ron/MON (or cetane, for Heavy Oil users) fuel for the engine to perform best, or most efficiently for the conditions its being used in, is hardly a Fad.

(A Clio 172 might well prefer 99 ron to 95 ron and the owner might get more smiles from the extra £2.50 spent per tank full.

£2.50 more again spent for Shell V Power Nitro might show no gains.

For the likes of a i10 it does not matter which fuel it gets, it does the same miles on 95 ron from any UK supplier.)

I remember when 40 to gallon was good from a car but now seems to be 50 to 60 or even 70 in some cases.

I always run my vrs on optimax as i think it feels to drive better and i dont spend it on owt else and enjoy my car so sod it, not even sure what its doing to gallon prob around 25.

When i had my s40 diesel it got run on normal stuff as really didnt see the point in spending 10p more when it would have made no differance to the way it drove , sold it after 2years though as it was just boring,

I've been using various brands of Diesel in the octy, Supermarket stuff to premium brand, The only conclusion i have come up with is Tesco Diesel is probably the worst stuff i have put into the car (with the exception of some Tesco express which sell Esso), Can't say much about MPG but the car feels a lot better to drive when using decent fuel Over Tesco crap.... :wonder:

I have to say I agree that Tesco seem to sell pretty bad diesel.

I find my Octavia is quite smoky on Tesco fuel, so I try to use Shell when I can.

Have to agree with this comment all the way. I bought my vRS for the smile, not the mpg....though i will say its a fairly good runner on mpg....38.1 at the moment....

I won't use Tesco fuel except as an absolute distress purchase. I've got a mate who keeps records, and reports about 15% higher consumption on Tesco diesel over Sainsbury's or brand name.

Morrisons has terrible diesel. Got my old vec serviced earlier this year and the fuel filter was dirty after only 11 months of usage.....

You have to wonder where the Tankers go to collect this terrible quality of diesel @ Depots, Refineries  etc.

Obviously these are terrible places with terrible storage and controls and products, down some back street & run by dodgy geezers,

sub standard compared to the Named Brand products collected from the proper places.

So basically there are cr4p fuels bought in huge amounts and sold by the Multi National Supermarkets,

compared to wonderful products sold by the Multi National Fuel Suppliers.

So like Own brand beans and Heinz or Cross and Blackwell, almost the same ingredients , but some taste different,

some to your taste or not, but basically Beans.

Not sure where they find the cheap rubbish though.

Must be some Back Street Food Manufacturer saving people money, or are they just ripping us off.
