New VRS Insurance wants me to install Tracker

Recommended Posts

Been out today and ordered my new VRS - Race Blue Estate with some options.. As a side note, also ordered the missus' Fabia Monte Carlo in White.

Checked with the insurance company this morning (Sky Insurance) and the missus is fine, but they have insisted I have a tracker installed otherwise the underwriter won't cover me.

Anyone (there must be someone) who has had a tracker installed - I've been Googling and there are a few, but they all have different technologies, different prices, etc..

Can anyone recommend me a good Thatcham approved tracking company, and which package.  As I have phoned Tracker and Cobra, both tried to sell me something over the phone, which I find is the wrong way to entice a potential customer.

Personally I'd see about another insurer.

I was quoted £330/year by my current insurer direct line for the mk3 vrs diesel I've ordered (28, 3points for sp50, 5 years ncb) although that wasn't with any extras such as protected ncb.

I know someone who had a tracker fitted as part of insure the box but I think that was more to stop him driving badly than anti theft.

Some insurers charge MORE when there's a tracker fitted.

It's as if by fitting one you yourself are acknowledging that your car is more

likely to be nicked than other types of car so they can therefore be justified  in

hiking the premiums to suit.

I'd look for a different insurer too, trackers can really interfere with the

stereo in a car. Our whole fleet of vans had them fitted at my last firm

and every one updated every 30 seconds and the radio made This noise.

As others have said, try a different insurer.

Mine isn't due to be delivered for a few weeks yet, however I did speak to my insurer at the weekend as I was changing my reg plate. So at the same time I enquired as to what the cost for insuring the new Octy will be (diesel manual) and there is no change from going from the Fabia VRS. Less than £300 and no tracker required, but I do have age on my side, a clean licence and a clear accident history.

We had 40 vehicles on our fleet and only about 10 of them

had zero interference. I suppose where the antenna goes

is the key to whether it will or won't or maybe it was just the type of

trackers our vans had. Ours were real time updated so management

could log in and see where the guys were, who was speeding, who went home early,

started late etc etc.

I have 10 yrs plus driving protected NCB, no points, etc..

I paid upfront for the year on credit card for both mine and the wifes present car.

I thought Sky were specialists in performance cars?

If I cancel the insurance from delivery date and start a new policy, I know I won't be able to claim for the years NCB, but I have 10 yrs plus so not too bothered.  The wife only has 3 yrs though.

Any advice?  Should I try Adrian Flux or one of the others?  It's a shame as Sky have always been so good to me.

I drive buses for a local charity, and they have real-time tracking in every bus, along with CB radio. I have never experienced radio interference, to date. I understand that it's not been installed, long.

Adding a tracker is something I would try to avoid if possible just for an easier life. As suggested I'd look for another insurer and hope its not something highlighted against your post code. Overall total price will probably be the decider.

I got a quick quote off compare the market for the vRS TDI estate of £240. I'm 29, 11 years ncb, clean licence, protected no claims, minimum voluntary excess etc but cost my dad £40 more for his Citigo and he's 55, full no claims, clean licence, no accidents etc and it was purely down to post code and no driveway. If he used my post code it was £130, he's about 2 miles away from me.

I've got my Chrysler 300C Touring insured through Sky Insurance and I had to change insurer (not broker) this year as Chaucer insisted on having a tracker fitted despite insuring my car for 2 years without one. I moved to Groupama as a result, but I still insure through Sky Insurance. There was only a small difference in cost.

Ask them if they can get a quote with someone else?

Change insurance company as said by others...its only a Skoda worth about £24k, Its not a £50k range rover!

Had way more expensive cars and never been told to get a tracker?

Thought Staffordshire was a nice place ;)

It is a nice area - never been asked to install a tracker on any car..  It's on the drive overnight and in a secure company car park during the day.

I wouldn't bother with Adrian Flux, it's a world of pain. I temporarily transferred a policy off of my £250 Rover onto another car. 2 months later I wanted to reinsure it, nothing had changed apart from I fixed a few things and they said they couldn't now quote for it unless I paid a rediculous premium and fitted an aftermarket immobiliser. Needless to say, I found a better insurer.

I really don't understand why they want a tracker fitted. I'm with saga and pay £250 protected NCD, no claims or convictions but when I checked in Jan when the cars were up for renewal thee were others around the same price. You'll be entitled to a partial refund, though it'll be heavily loaded in Sky's favour. I don't know what a tracker will cost you but I'm guessing it'll be the cost of at least 2 years insurance so I'd cut my losses and find another insurer.

I was with Direct LIne and they were a good price on year one, but as always year two was getting expensive, just do the usual play the game, roam around from insurer to insurer always get 1st year discounts etc and as for a tracker installed, ant see why, its not a Ferrari is it!

Try Skoda Insurance - I find them competitive.

Standard cover

£1895.26
Total quote per year£1922.44
per month*£174.62

Not that competitive..  :giggle:
