Today a plan has been hatched to move the Skyline on a bit.

Partly because the Yeti will soon be faster round Brands Hatch than a Skyline GT-R, which just isn't right.

So we are moving up a size in turbos, which should take the 480bhp to around 520-550.

Also adding billet wheels to reduce lag a little, resulting in them not being very different in lag to the ones I have now, so still good for track days and not too top-endy.

New turbos are on, having had billet wheels fitted.

Previous exhaust system for more power is also back, but with the comical "channel tunnel" tailpipe removed for something a bit more sensible looking.

 

It feels much stronger already and is spooling better.

 

 

 

Just got to wait for it's remapping now to get the best out of it...  two week delay. :(

Fingers crossed for around 550bhp give or take a bit.

The 32, 33 and 34 are effectively the same drivetrain in three different bodies.

The R34 did get a 6 speed box but they all used the same RB26 six cylinder inline twin turbo engine.

 

Amazing that back in the 90s they designed a whole new car body with noticable updates every four or five years.

No facelifts, new models.

 

The 35 is a whole new car, designed much later.

Much faster, much more capable.

 

 

I personally like the R32 because of a few reasons.

It's not the fastest, but in my opinion it is the most fun.  You really do have to drive it.

It looks a little understated, but purposeful with it's flared arches.

The later models got more and more "in your face" styling.

 

Also the R32 had the shortest wheelbase, making it the most frisky on track (or road).  The most challenging to drive well.

It's not uncommon to come out of corners with the back end out a bit, it's how they were designed to drive.

It's also the smallest and lightest.

 

One big Japanese tuner summarised it very well.

"The RB26 Skyline GT-Rs are like three naughty sisters, but the R32 has the most potential"

 

There is also the historical factor if you are into such things.

While the later ones have a bigger following in the UK (the R32 was never offically sold in the UK, they are all imports) it was the car that started the whole thing.

The nickname "Godzilla" was directly aimed at the R32, it was used by rival teams during racing and picked up by the press.

The later models traded on this nickname.  The R32 GT-R earned it.

 

At the time (around 1987-88) Nissan was behind the other big Japanese makers.

It set out to build a racing car to stamp their authority on tin top racing and show what it could do.

The car was so effective that within a few years the rules were changed in some series to exclude the R32 because the non-Nissan teams didn't have a chance.

 

It entered 29 JTCC races.  It won all 29.  Taking the title from 1989 to 1993.

It similarly dominated Super Taikyu racing in Japan (won every race it started) and won at the Austrailian Bathhurst race in 1991 and 1992 despite being hampered by a 100kg weight penalty to give the Ford RS500 Cosworths a chance.

 

It's amazing how little the car is known in the UK because we never got it.

But it was clearly well ahead of it's time and was spanking the cream of the performance cars in it's day, including Cosworths.

 

In my opinion it's amazing that these days you can buy one for around £10-12k in good condition and for less than £20k total spend take the power up to what the tin top cars were making (550-600bhp) creating a 20 year old car that's capable of keeping up with some serious modern performance machines.

So the R32 GT-R with it's slightly larger turbos and billet wheels went in for mapping yesterday...

 

Comes on boost a little earlier than it did before with the old turbos, spools well and peaks at 535(ish)bhp according to RK tuning.

Looking forward to picking it up later on.

Not sure what I'm missing, but that isn't ruffling my feathers over what I've got.

I like how mine sounds now with the big HKS system and a custom slightly smaller tailpipe.

 

Has a lovely burble at idle.

Don't think you've heard it anyway, it's not the restrictive system that was on in the AMD rolling road clip.

 

It's just had the HKS system put back on along with the billet turbo upgrade.

Let's just say I'm impressed.

For track and all year round usabily they've wound the engine back to 525bhp (give or take a few) and it feels normal from 1k-3k, rather eager from 3k to around 4.5k and then at 4,500rpm it's like someone has pushed the "star wars" hyperspace button.

 

The first time I floored it in second gear it took off quicker than my R35 did.  No only did it shock me a bit, but the acceleration was so relentless that I couldn't get the gear change in quick enough and bounced off the limiter at nearly 7,300rpm.  Which probably shot a flame out of the exhaust.

 

Friggin heck it's unreal!

And I have had one or two brisk cars in my time too.

One month ago at AMD, 428bhp and 360 lb/ft.

 

 

 

Yesterday, 523bhp and around 435 lb/ft.

 

 

Where the line gets a bit wavey is where it gets into it's stride and tried to bring a bit of front wheel drive in to stabilise the car.

The DD rollers at Redline don't seem to like this.

 

While headline figures are nice it's the drivability that's good, considering I'm now running bigger turbos.

At 5,000 rpm it's already making nearly 400bhp and over 400 lb/ft, at AMD it was around 330 and 350.

 

Would be interesting to take it back to AMD and see what it makes on their rollers that like four wheel drive.

Even if it's just so I can get a nice smooth graph.

I'm finding myself looking at R32's and I'd love one but I wouldn't know what the pitfalls were. All are imports, finding a good one like Richard's is hard plus I'm not sure how easy it would be to insure one. How easy is it to get parts or is it a case of uprate things when they wear out?
