Hey Dan... what did you use to clean up the EGR and inlet? I suspect mine will look just as bad. Did you not consider an EGR delete kit? I'm wondering if its worth it for around £50...

Hello Dan!

I used a few things mate, tried petrol, paint thinners, some random drain cleaner but none came even close to caustic soda. I got a bottle from Boots for £3 (although had some lying around the house as it's great for removing annodising from bike parts!) and it took minutes to dissolve all the carbon deposits.

If you do get some though please be careful using it! It is incredibly volatile and burns skin in milliseconds. Also the fumes are disgusting.

I did consider an EGR delete but thought i'd take the hands on approach first. Got an EGR delete on the way anyway just to remove the restrictions in the egr itself. Hope that helps mate

Hey!

Quite a few updates from the past few days. I've fitted a powerflex dogbone mount bush, EGr delete kit and finally plumbed in my boost gauge!

I fitted the EGR delete pipe first. I did block my EGR vac pipe off originally however the restriction within the egr is still there, mines also leaking like mad everywhere so probably losing me boost there! Also gets rid of another horrible VAG boost connector clip and replaced with a jubilee clip :)

Here they are!

This is the EGR delete compared to the normal EGR pipe. The thing sticking out is the nipple for the boost gauge!

Then removed the EGR pipe to the EGR and blanked it off with the plate provided in the kit.

I didn't have anything to simply block the nipple off and didn't have enough time / supplies to fit the boost gauge yesterday as I needed some more piping. IMPROVISSSSEEE! haha Worked a treat

10928814096_4c60d7cfb4_b.jpg

I then set out to fit the dogbone mount bush. So easy to remove. 4 bolts and it was off. Absolutely no need to support the engine whilst doing this

The old one has so many gaps in it no wonder the engine rocks so much when putting your foot down.

I didn't realise it would be so hard to press the new one in so I had to use some common sense / reach into my inner pikey and thought of doing this. It actually worked hahaha, pressed it in with the jack and using the weight of the car.

Will give my comments on it at the end :)

I then went and bought some more boost gauge piping, I used this stuff from pets at home. It's meant for fish tanks but fits absolutely perfect!

10947262506_aa426dc3f4_b.jpg

Started wiring it through the bulkhead. Also reallllly not sure what this black pipe is for? It did lead to teh engine bay but wasn't connected to anything and it had a little nipple connector on the end. The end is on the right of this pic?

Also due to the T fitting I have I had to make something to block the other connector, I don't have a straight through connector with the antibuzz fitting inside only this T piece so i'm doing this, for now maybe until I find a proper connector but it works a treat.

10947419163_9b469016e6_b.jpg

I then started to wire in the boost gauge so it comes on with the sidelights and the headlights, out with my best mate. The multimeter! Was just a case of prodding a few wires to find the one that showed just under 12 volts when turning the light switch.

10947353746_182b022a63_b.jpg

Anyway, little bit of feedback from installing everything:

The car now absolutely flies, i'm not sure which made the biggest difference but the car just feels so much more planted when hitting the loud pedal. The engine doesn't rock back and forth and changing gear is just seamless now with barely any hesitation. It just pulls and pulls and pulls. So much fun and I can't wait to jump in the car now.

It does have a slight vibration on idle and when setting off but it's not an obtrusive rattle at all, it's more of a meaningful rattle like the car means business if that even makes sense? Just feels right.

It picks up so much better now and tapping the throttle is instant power now whereas before it used to hesitate ever so slightly. Would recommend the bush to anyone, for £30 I'm going to say it's the best price:difference mod i've done this car so far.

Hello.

Today I finally started to fit my cruise control stalks and wire in the loom. It was so frustrating as the wiring is hidden away and the plugs are the same. You relaly have to fiddle around getting the plugs out.

Started to remove the the side panel to gain access to the control module.

10996541545_69e3ca757b_b.jpg

I then removed the light switch panel, the wires dangling are for the lights.

10996538725_58d127b316_b.jpg

First blooooooood!

10996619386_706fa65f98_b.jpg

This is what it looks like as standard, I then have to drop the box with the red wires going to it along with the relay box behind it to gain access to the plug where you have to fit the wiring loom into.

10996686514_5d19cbafb5_b.jpg

Control module dropped

10996681104_011e8b045a_b.jpg

Relays dropped!

10996732753_705a827d85_b.jpg

This box of plugs is what I thought I had to connect the wire to but boy was I wrong haha, turned out its way to the left away from easy arms reach.

10996728693_8401ccdc05_b.jpg

Finally got the correct white plug out, required sliding a metal bar to the left to release it from its holder.

10996595186_cb40110ae7_b.jpg

I then slotted the wire in the plug, initially releasing the purple pin holder to allow to fit the new pin in.

10996591876_550ec42b6b_b.jpg

Bye bye wire!!, plug back in its holder and the wire loose.

10996587586_cb079d21a8_b.jpg

I shoved my camera right in to show the white plug where the new wire goes into, as you can see it's pretty far back!

10996705233_6b57305566_b.jpg

Started to remove the steering wheel too!

10996701153_ed538fe24a_b.jpg

Bought the correct tool too, my first "proper" tool i've bought as usually we've got it in the box. Mandatory cup of coffee in the background too haha

10996571506_47e2de696c_b.jpg

I then started to remove the cowling to gain access to the stalks to swap them over and wire in more of the loom to the connector at the back of the stalks.

This is the connector, notice how there are plug gaps at the top then look at the next pic to see where the new ones go!

10996589504_dfc3d52c38_b.jpg

I then had to wire in a final wire to the fusebox, I went to one that comes on with ignition as I don't want power constantly being fed to the loom.

Few more pics of me doing this!

Then finally I had to activate it on VCDS, thanks to my Dad's trusty million year old laptop haha. The battery lasts 10 mins after a full charge so I had to be quick lol

Started putting it all back together!

10996562244_0ea08e500c_b.jpg

I also caved in and bought a black boost gauge, the silver one didn't go too well and this looks much better imo!

great write up    where do you find the time:-)        p.s I don't think the door buttons are supposed to "work"  just indicators     what's next?

Cheers man :)

Haha well i'm in 3rd year at Uni now so get a few days off Uni as it's more independent learning but luckily I nailed loads of my dissertation in the first few weeks so i've got a bit of time on my hands!

I'm not sure what you're referring to about the door buttons though? Please explain!

Next "big" update will be the fitting of the turbo and the remap which will be after Christmas although maybe some stuff inbetween as my girlfriend has just asked me if I want to work for Everest this christmas = money which is ideal! Worked as a canvasser all summer which was fun (ish)

Yep they are, they don't do anything, I get you now. But the passenger side comes down and pops back up again. Still haven't fixed that actually haha

Just a small update

I gave it a semi detail (clayed with bilt hamber auto clay, washed with citrus wash and gloss, one coat of srp and one coat of Colli #915)

And removed the drivers seat to properly clean behind the gaps as they were really bad. Didn't do the passenger as the bolts were a nightmare to remove without the proper m10 spline tool so got one in the post to fully complete the job!

First with the wash / detail afters!

Also I found my bottle of G1! I then stupidly dropped the bottle with the lid off whilst being distracted by being on the phone. The smallest bottle in the world and I dropped it alllllllll !! £12 wasted haha

I think if/when you come to sell this car mate someone will snap your hand off if they read this thread and see the amount of time and effort you've spent on the car. Really does look like you got yourself a cracking motor there now!

Thank you so much for that mate!! :)

I'd love to sort out all the dints but it would cost me so much, might do it myself but I know how hard it is to get filler perfect etc

Car is looking so good mate! You've done a few of my plans too. Where did you get your boost gauge if you don't mind me asking.

Hey dude I got it from eBay

I used a combo of connectors from a fish tank with some clear piping so that it bends back on itself, something like this! It's a bit of a bodge job but worked :)

I was told that bending over a bit of silicone piping like the fish tank stuff and cable tying it tight would also work but I luckily had these spares lying around the house (not sure why as we don't own any fish haha)

Ignore the Y piece coming from the boost pipe, was just showing you the arrangement with the blue plastic connectors. Might give you some ideas but no doubt there will be an easier way haha

Cheers Dan. That's a cool idea. It would only be temporary until I bought and fitted a boost gauge.

Am loving the mpg hunting by the way, same as what I'm doing! Hoping the planned elephant mod and EGR delete will give me a bit of an increase.

How have I missed this thread?!

Top work mate, seriously. Love a well written build thread.

Would love to know if the airtec FMIC would fit a Fabia, in terms of trimming the bumper and foglights etc.

Will be keeping an eye on this.

P.s any plans to change the yellow dial surrounds?

About the dials, I'm not too sure tbh mate I quite like them yellow now, it's a bit different :)

Nothing too exciting really. Made an attempt at cleaning the engine bay, didn't have much stuff to use just standard all purpose cleaner but couldn't really do with some degreaser. Will dress the plastics another day, just wanted to clear the first bit of dirt.

Love this thread Dann  some great little touches, plus I think you've convinced me to change my engine mount as it looks pretty straight forward :) although now not going to touch the cruise, think I'll leave that to Tech1e :D

Dan how 'different' does the car feel after the geometry set up? I am researching for a forthcoming project car which will almost certainly be an Ibiza sport pd130.

ATB Dave

Hey man, I did comment in your thread but I think you might have missed it as I posted at the exact same time as someone else.

Well as the camber and caster can't be adjusted on this model all they could change was the toe, consequently thrown out when I put a new track rod end on. But after the alignment it felt brilliant, used to pull to one side when braking hard and I didn't feel too confident on where I would end up but now it's much better.

I do feel like it's lacking something though, wish I had uprated my wishbone bushes to solid cupra ones now. Or fit lowering springs and shocks.

Thanks a lot Jars! Yeah changing the mounts is fun as it's so easy, 4 x 16mm nuts and it's off. Just ensure you've got lots of grease when putting it back together so it all slides in perfectly is all I can advise really :)

I think this is a great direction to go in, some good springs and shocks and maybe some superpro polybushes or the cupra ones.  All money really well spent to get the most out of the car, for me far better than adding power, or at least the better place to start.

Only downer is after each you will need to take her back to Allcar to get the alignment done again.
